Well, at least it’ll be really out then… hopefully… possibly. ![]()
eternal refers to the time it took to release the album. it’s the concept, the vision
Ugh it’s not on CDJ for some reason.
This work, which features a sound that has evolved even more emotionally than the previous work, and a world of songs and lyrics that condense Kiyoharu’s “current”, is constantly evolving musically without being bound by the times.
Kiyoharu continues to express himself, and even though all the songs are unreleased, it can be said to be his ``current best album.‘’
Sorry, I kept forgetting (maybe procrastinating) to add a comment. He’s my all time favorite musician so I’m definitely interested in the new album. I really loved his last release JAPANESE MENU/DISTORTION 10, more so than the preceding album. I especially love the guitar work in JM/D10.
I wouldn’t say I’m “excited” for this release though… Even though I listen to Japanese music every day and follow musicians on social media daily and check music sites and these forums still, I don’t really get as excited about new releases as I used to. Can’t come up with a reason why.
And as far as KIYOHARU is concerned, as a fan I feel detached from his career compared to a decade ago. He used to blog and tweet regularly and had a more active career. Remember, there was a period where he was releasing albums annually and even had solo, Kuroyume, and SADS activity going on at the same time for a year or two. I was really into learning what he had planned back then and kept a close eye on any news. These days he rarely releases music. It will be four years since the last release assuming ETERNAL isn’t delayed again (as is tradition for KIYOHARU music). It feels like he’s put most social media/promotional stuff behind paywalls too. His twitter feels like it’s run by a staff member to spam concert and broadcast info rather than him sharing his thoughts on recording, writing, etc. Sooooo… I don’t know, my ears perk up when I find out he has a new musical project/release on the horizon, but it ain’t the same as when he was released 3 singles, 2 DVDs, and album (maybe 2 at times) a year. There’s no point in paying attention to his career as much anymore. It’s better to just let the release happen and then offer my thoughts then.
For the first time in years I’m making my way through his entire disco again and I’m almost done with Covers and I’m starting to get more into his current style than say the days of Vinny and Madrigal etc.
Watching his new years show and they had a lot of technical issues and he talked a lot over eight hours and even seemed to have some trouble singing. Certainly unlike any performance I’ve seen before and I’ve seen every one around.
I haven’t watched this whole New years live to notice those issues yet but I feel like his years of heavy smoking, on stage as a visual gimmick and probably from his needs, has affected his voice pretty heavily compared to his contemporaries.
Back in the 00s, toward the end of Sads and into his solo work, he was routinely doing 3+ hour concerts, I’m sure that couldn’t have been good on his vocal cords either.
For me his peak solo voice was the mid to late 00’s. Light & Shade really made it seem like he was trying extra hard with his vocal delivery.
I like the arrangement and the vibes, but man, his voice… At first it was just like a bit thinner sounding than usual but when that chorus hits I get this weird urge to clear my throat, haha.
Solid song. Like it more so when I close my eyes and listen to it. Too much going on in that video for a mid tempo song like that. ![]()
My only criticism for the song itself is that I wish the bass was more pronounced/memorable? Feels like the aim was to put the focus on the guitars, drums, and sax. The bass took a backseat.
I love this new style he’s taken what he does live and has turned it into a recorded experience and this is the evolution of KIYOHARU who went from punk to rock to flamenco to acoustic to blues and now some kind of thing like Juno Reactor or maybe the more apt version would be a SUGIZO 2008 live show.
It had good vibes until the chorus… Had to turn it off. Not that good… Just my opinion.
Yeah…I probably won’t even listen to this album much like the last one or two he came out with.
Kiyoharu’s early solo run from 2004-2009 or so…seemed unstoppable. 4 albums were release ( Poetry - Mellow - Kannou Boogie - Vinny beach) almost basically in a 2 year span. And now he’s releasing albums every 2-4 years with more mixed results for my tastes.
I keep thinking of the fact that the special ingredient during those early years versus afterwards was having Miyo-ken (M-Age) and Yoshitsugu (Eins:Vier) really being integral to the songwriting process. Miyo-ken was listed as co-writer on a lot of those songs and that seemed to have stopped somewhere around Soloist with maybe some scant songs here and there by Miyo-ken.
Yoshitsugu still played live with him during the pandemic era gigs but as far as recording goes it doesn’t sound like he’s recorded with Kiyoharu in while. I guess that’s fine, get some new creative blood into the mix. But this flamenco infused rock doesn’t catch my ear much. That’s just me though.
Some quick thoughts on this new track.
-The opening sounds like a Miyavi song… which I don’t mind for him since that’s his thing now but for kiyoharu, it just seems out of place and aimed toward catching people’s streaming feeds.
-Kiyoharu’s lack of using a bassist just makes everything sound thin. I play the bass so I’m biased here and forever annoyed by the lack of one in recent years ![]()
-The saxophone sound is a nice addition. That guy was the star of Kiyoharu’s recent new year’s live and I looked forward to his solo’s more than a traditional guitar one.
It did and it actually confused me for a second lol
It’ll be interesting to see the credits for the new album when it finally comes out at the end of March; feels like it should come out in February, but yeah.
