He keeps releasing at a pretty high pace. The last one “Villains” was pretty weak. I wonder why he doesn’t just add 1-3 really strong songs to the next Mucc album instead.
Also I suspect the mucc members help him with the instrumetals…? lol. I kind of recognized Yukke’s base in “drive!!!”.

Money
You think he is making any big money on the solo project? He only has around 1200 listeners on spotify monthly. Or concerts with merch for girls/elderly ladies that love “tacchan”?
All his projects and lives keep selling out in japan, his fanbase is very strong. And no wonder, he is an entertainer, a fantastic MC, and that all combined with his singing skills.
Some of his solo songs are weak for me too, but I am sure his fans do not care that much.
I agree that they should take more time for the creative process of new music, but they rarely stop, if i am not wrong, like 10 years ago they made an announcement of “taking a band break” and it was only a 5-moth(?) vacation time ![]()
the single covers are quite standard, no complaints
I think it was even less, like 2-3 months for first the first time in their carrer… and then, everyone panicked talking about disbandment ![]()
For his solo stuff, Im not sure how he makes it profitable (Im guessing fanclub and similar) because also hires a big band and is not like he is playing in really big livehouse, isnt he?
I don’t think he aims to be 1 of the 6 people that can actually make a living out of Spotify streams.
Like @Osukke said, his lives are healthy and he plays decent venues. I would also add that it isn’t the money he makes with the solo stuff, he’s in it for the potential too. With the kind of music he’s making we can all tell he’s fishing for tie-ins. That can also lead to more expousure - and that can also lead to more TV appearances and such. The kind of stuff that lets someone retire into a general entretainer role when they need to. So, making something like this for himself may not be a goldmine but it also gets him some extra money in the bank while also invensting in oneself. I don’t think he makes the greatest music either but I get his angle.
Please don’t get the impression I am bashing on him and his efforts. I a big fan and when mucc tours I go to about half of the shows every time, as a reason for me get out more and travel around in Japan
and indeed mentioning Spotify wasn’t the smartest as japanese people must almost be unique today when it comes “to not” stream music, in general.
I just wish he would put more effort in his music/say no to weak stuff. Tacchan himself has never been a good songwriter but good at writing lyrics, sure! If you check his last tour he didn’t play at many big venues, and hires people to play unless kouhais thatdo it for free, but hard to imagine that’s the case for a Japan your.
Also the era of showing jrock/VK on TV is over. I can almost guess what you might reply to this, but it’s over. In no mainstream media, anymore, ever. The DeG Agency paid yahoo (biggest news portal in Japan) to write about phalaris at the time, and I remember it had 0 comments.
It might be hard for foreigners to understand how non mainstream jrockvk is today. It’s not only niche, it’s… I don’t know what to say.
But this little discussion comes from all our tacchan love ![]()
So you don’t like his style of writing lyrics in general? Then why are you surprised that you don’t like his solo stuff?
I think it’s a bit bold to assume he’s not putting much effort in it. I think he really is. It’s just way poppier and completely different than MUCC.
It would not make sense at all to start a solo project and make it a MUCC clone. The pop style is pretty much the whole concept. It’s like eating licorice even though you don’t like licorice. Then it’s just not for you, I guess? I enjoy some songs, but most of them are not really for me either, I’d say.
No, not officially, I think. The studio musicians are basically the musicians from his gigs. And virtually all of his solo songs are produced/written together with Fusafumi Adachi (ex Fujifabric).
Reading interviews about his solo stuff gives you a good insight. It sounds like he’s just doing it for fun really:
“Five or six years ago, when the members of MUCC were bringing their own songs to the band, Tatsuro came to our house to make a demo tape. Our music production company had a variety of equipment, including microphones and preamps, so he thought it might be a good idea. Tatsuro doesn’t play an instrument, but he said, “I want you to give form to what you have in mind.” Since then, he often comes over to hang out, and when we suggest chord progressions as an extension of our playful activities, he’ll say, “That’s great! I want to add a melody to it.” We’ve remained friends like that ever since.
That’s especially true since he began his solo career. Before that, he would first give me broad themes like “this kind of era feel,” “UK-like,” or “pop-like,” and I would create songs based on those. But since he began his solo career, he’s started giving me more specific images, like “there’s this kind of drummer and bassist, the guitarist is like this, and there are two keyboardists,” and when we approach him based on that, he’s like, “Ah, that’s it.” Over the past year or so, my batting average has gradually improved (laughs). I feel like I’m starting to understand Tatsuro’s preferences.”
“— So solo work never takes priority.
Exactly.
— Still, as a “playground,” it really feels fulfilling.
Yeah. I enjoy it in the gaps, and if something fails, then Adachi (Fusafumi) and I just laugh and say, “Well, that didn’t work.”
If it runs a deficit, the company gets mad at us—but if it barely stays in the black, it just means Adachi and I worked for free (laughs).
— Compared to being in a band, how would you put into words what’s enjoyable about doing solo work?
Hmm… freedom, I guess. I’m the only one who decides what’s OK and what’s not. If I’m fine with it, it’s fine; if I don’t like it, then it’s not. The biggest thing is that it’s not decided by everyone’s opinions.
…But on the other hand, there’s no enjoyment of creating something together. There’s the advantage that I can decide everything on my own, and the disadvantage that I have to decide everything on my own. When you write it out, it sounds similar, but that’s exactly the strength and the weakness.
— Conversely, a band is interesting precisely because opinions fly around and things change.
Right. With solo work, it’s harder for chemical reactions to happen.
…That said, I’m not doing it completely alone, I work together with Adachi, so it’s not that nothing happens. There are both enjoyable aspects and lonely aspects that are specific to solo work.
Both band work and solo work have parts that are hard and parts that are easy, but what’s hard and what’s easy is completely reversed. The ratio is perfectly opposite. Maybe it’s just wanting what you don’t have.
— That’s something you only realize by doing both.
In that sense, I don’t really want to start another band. If it were a band that only moved very occasionally and was fully just a hobby, then maybe. If I were to do one, I’d want to do it with aie.
I’m curious what kind of music would come out if aie and I formed a band. He’s in about a hundred bands already (laughs), so adding one more to make it 101 wouldn’t change anything, right? Like, “Want to do the 101st one with me?”
The band name would be “The 101” (laughs).
— I’d love to see that (laughs). Since starting your solo work, do you feel it’s had a positive influence on MUCC as well?
I think so. When it comes to singing itself, it doesn’t really change depending on where I am, so I haven’t thought about it that deeply. But the more places you sing and the more you think about singing, the more likely it is that your skills will naturally improve.”
