DEZERT new album "yourself: ATTITUDE" release

4 posts were split to a new topic: DEZERT - yourself: ATTITUDE

Out of curiosity, what’s the backstory for the band’s major phase? Like, their early stuff was pretty hard, so why did they get chosen to be the next band to lose all personality? Surely this kind of thing doesn’t shift large numbers?

It’s weird.

I don’t think there’s much more to it than what presents on the surface.

Token heavy visual kei band decides that trading in their heaviness for a more palatable, commercial sound would bring the success. Maybe they got tired of playing metalcore. Maybe the vocalist had a mental breakdown and wanted to go in a new direction. They were banking on gaining more fans than they lost. They decided to ultimately be a small fish in the sea instead of a big fish in a small pond. And seeing as how they didn’t immediately disband after hitting their first rough spot, I have to say that it’s probably working out for them.

wowzers, that is one butt-ugly cover

@zeus
Can we please not move the preview of the mini album onto the review thread. It would be an important post for the news thread as well.

MV is ooout

and has a lot of English in it. Just saying

besides what @zeus said, Chiaki himself explained it back during TODAY album release campaign

He said something in the lines of the change being his fault, he didn’t want to scream his ass off anymore and TODAY was the album he wanted/could make at the time, mainly due to his mental health state or something like that, it was that or no deal… apparently the other members just went along

they even had a tour that was named some shit like “tour to save chiaki’s life and mental state” lol

I was one of those who thought it was more of a phase, guess I was wrong…

guess in the end it worked out pretty fine for them, apparently their audience grew and they are playing bigger arenas much more frequently… and eventually you gotta compromise if you want to appease more people, the downside is that we’ll probably never get another「あー。」 ever again

though their songs seems much more balanced nowadays, the period between TODAY and black hole was ROUGH

I’m fine with the change 'cause I arrived late to the party and I really love The Heart Tree

Thank you for this, very interesting!

I’d also add that this band is 15 years old. It’s easy to imagine that Chiaki must’ve gotten the initial D’espairsray, 00s influences out of his system within the first few years and the thought of having to do that to a dozen people at Chop in your 40s instead of playing Uverworld or something in a packed arena can entice you to experiment with a more palatable style…

I still think that Miyako/Vivi is a big talent and he elevates the portion of their later output that I’m into. Their first full length album’s still the best out of their discography by far, but I’m able to enjoy the choice cuts from whatever they’re still putting out.

I have a soft spot for black hole bc that was when i got into them. Maybe it sounds generic to other people, but i don’t listen to like regular pop music or anything outside of vk so this was refreshing to me.

Gosh i loved the tour to save Chiaki so much. Being in a bad mental state myself at the time, the theme of the tour made me feel so seen😔

Ofc when you compare it to their older tracks they’re a lot less edgy and the lyrics are a lot less unhinged now, but i guess that happens to every band who’s been around for more than 10 years.

Chiaki mentioned that if they don’t change their sound, they will disband. I think that if you’re in a bad mental state and keep singing while focusing on negative feelings, it can only get worse. Chiaki also said that he can still write songs in their old style if he wants to, but that’s not his true feeling anymore, and it would be dishonest to his fans to continue writing them.

A few weeks ago, Ryoga from Razor shared an interesting story about how happy he is that Chiaki has matured a lot over the years. When he first saw dezert, it was at a two-day event while he was still with Born. On the first day, dezert closing for the event. Ryoga was so impressed by their performance that he went backstage to congratulate them and tell them how awesome their show was. However, Chiaki bluntly replied, “It’s the worst.” Ryoga was shocked and felt bad that dezert left with a sense of regret, feeling they hadn’t performed their best, so he asked dezert to wait and go asking the event manager if dezert could have another chance the next day. He suggested that dezert could perform as a secret band, and the manager agreed. When Ryoga went back to the stage to share this news and asked the band to leave their equipment for a secret opening performance tomorrow, he realized that Chiaki had already gone home, only other three members still in the live house and waiting for him.

Long story short, the next day, when dezert performed their secret opening set, the audience didn’t know about it, and most of the fans attending on the second day didn’t recognize dezert, so they weren’t very excited. After the performance, Ryoga met with Chiaki and he looked even more upset and grumpy, telling him it was “even worse.” Ryoga thought, “Dude, I fought for you to make this happen! Normally, you should just fake a smile and say polite words to thank me for the opportunity.” On the other hand, he was quite impressed that this junior had the courage to express his true feelings.
