Aside from Japan Bonus Tracks it’s a reason a lot of older record collectors liked picking up Japanese editions of LPs. More nice things to activate monkey brain neurons.
I just don’t like when they put the big wraparound ones on gatefold records because there’s a 60% chance they’ll be torn on arrival. The ones Deg puts on their recent LPs have been dinky little folded guys that don’t get in the way, but I’m not complaining either.
Deadheaven’s New Bermuda LP, at least the (american) version i bought, had an obi; i’m not aware of anyone in that band having obvious connections to or interest in any Japanese scenes lol
From what I’ve seen, it’s kind of half and half on just a pop/rock album. I’ve seen them mostly without one, but it depends on what label pressed the record.
International labels do get a hold of rights to Japanese music, and if their thing is to include OBI they will like in this example of a Chinese edition of Sigh’s Scenario Iv: Dread (which is coincidentally the only vinyl pressing of this particular album).
