How most new bands sound the same?

Is it just me, or are most of the vocalists sounding so…generic?

I’m always on the lookout for new vkei bands to listen to. But recently I barely found someone unique. Of course there are exceptions.
I know it’s hard to do something new on this broad market.

Can anyone recommend me some unique sounding bands? Disbanded or active, I don’t mind. I just need something new

I feel the same way and also have a hard time finding new bands to like.

A lot of them just look, sound and feel so similar that I often cannot distinguish them from each other

My recommendation for an active and relatively new band would be Fukuro, but you probably already know them. Their sound really stands out - it’s kind a jazzy.

Fukuro, CHAQLA. and MAMA. are three recent bands coming to mind with a distinctive style.

I tried getting into Fukuro, mostly because of Yoshiatsu, but I just never liked jazzy things xD

Mama. reminds me of a few bands jumbled together ^^ CHAQLA does sound unique, it just doesn’t give my brain the right itch. Sadly.

I’d throw in 黒猫 (Kuroneko). The songs from 彼岸 (higan) come with their recent vocalist, as well as the latest singles and the one prior to the collection album. Anything before is their first vocal, I think.

I feel ya, I’m in the same boat. Main gripe with VK for a long while now.

Lately one band that has done it for me is Kalavinka (KALAVINKA profile | カラビンカプロフィール | vkgy (ブイケージ)) I recently discovered it and thought they were new-ish but they have been around for a long time, apparently.

They have a very interesting mix of traditional-like japanese melodies and vocals with punk rock/shoegaze/post-rock (?) instruments. It felt really special when I firstly came upon it and the 2024 album is a blast for me and feels really well done for a project that is so small scale. Kinda shocked they don’t seem to have that many fans.

It’s on spotify so maybe it helps you out as it did with me.

Kouki of D=OUT has a very unique nasal voice, I feel like early D=OUT will also give u a good little sprinkle of energetic Wafuu-kei!

And if you find yourself being able to sit with the nasalness I think you might like yourself some Penicillin.

I really like what the art-kei folks do, i think those folks really push out some unique vocals that I really enjoyed a lot. Have you heard of Moran? (where are my millenial folks who remember Moran-Snowing being THE recommended YouTube video for vkei)

my personal favourites are amber gris and yazzmad in terms of art kei. I’ve listened to More a lot in the past but I haven’t caught up with them lately.

and speaking of amber gris and unique new bands…

Oh yeah and yazzmad came back very recently!!

  • appears randomly at the mention of Yazzmad -

If you’re into wavy powerful voices Sono from Matenrou Opera is an outstanding vocalist ! not for everyone but I personally love him !
( and MO are just THE shit, they’re veterans but still got it, still very active )

Naoki from Yazzmad have one of the most beautiful ( not so )recent/( but ) still active voices in VK imo, his vocal performance toward the end of this new song is just … :baby_angel:t2::wing:

Welp Hitomi from Moran have a beautiful quite easy to identify voice

And the singer of Sweet Violence ( ex Shounenki ) also is easily recognizable

when he was in Shounenki :

With sweet violence ( pretty dope and IN band )

not a VK band not a recent one, but I like to do propaganda lol The singer of TMGE ( and ROSSO and The birthday )

conclusion : there is only one recent band on my list :l so maybe you’re right lol

But to be fair when your standard to be are literally prodigies like Diru or gazette, theres not much you can do to stand out

I’ll be taking advantage of this post to ask for recomendations as well. Is there any new or not very known band with vocalist that channel the “quirky” (for lack of a better word) vocal style some vk frontmen use? The likes of Daisuke, Kirito, Junno, Hakuei, etc? That kind of rock band.

Sweet violence sounds dope :folded_hands:t2: They are active, right?
