the bandmen interview thread on here is littered with mentions that indie-indie VK scene is not a nice environment for a lot of artists, but so is anything else creative, and it’s not a japan-only issue if we’re being honest.

In a country as small and densely populated as Japan, the concept of six degrees of separation is more like THREE degrees. Everyone is connected to everyone, especially in the music industry where networking is key. Odds are that yakuza is in there somewhere, somehow.
It would be super weird if someone asked “how much are metal bands connected to the mafia??”
