I LARPed as a bangya for 10 weeks straight, here’s what happened to my brain

Chaqla 3 days ゲリラコンセプトライブ Halloween Night 11/05 @ Higashi Koenji 20,000V

It’s my first time back to 20,000V this trip, it takes me two busses and a train to get here, when I really could have just taken the Marunouchi line.

So it’s.. Halloween? Kind of late. But you do you, guys. This is the second in a series of three Oneman shows here at 20,000V, yesterday being Punk Night, and tomorrow being Chaqla night? Guess that could just be being decked out in Chaqla merch.

They state that each show has a pre-determined dress code, and that entrance is subject to member approval. I put my usual “cat” costume on, complete with fingerless gloves as my paws and Ryutaro’s cat ear hood towel. Getting odd looks from people as to why I’m dressed like this five days after Halloween is done.

And as it turns out, they weren’t kidding. I’m about the 35th in the venue and the members are at the door, appraising the outfits. A venue staff dressed as Winnie the Pooh looks me over and says “good, right?”

Who I believe is the bassist, Takanosuke, dressed in a dinosaur onesie over his costume, says “ah, lovely! Yes!” while giving a thumbs up.

There’s still a spot at the far edge of the left, second row, so I grab it. Merch not on sale yet, so I just chill and wait until the band inevitably comes on.

They head on stage with their outfits, and start up with a song from their self titled album, Poison, followed by Shukai no ne, everyone’s hands in the air. A few of their songs going in multiple different directions, including Gokujouna Loser.

For Liberation 369, Takanosuke drops down into the crowd to have people circle pit around him. I join in, because why not?

The set continues on with some songs that have some pretty unique furi, like Konoyo no Owari.

They have their first MC around this time, when Annie A says something about “there’s a murderer in this place”, and I just hope it’s not a repeat of Hitchcock’s carnival show.

They start up their newest single, Anthem, and it sounds just as good live as I hoped it would.

During Miscast, Annie starts up a call and response part, and gets me to shout into the mic for a couple seconds.

They then break for another MC where they throw stuff into the audience after Annie takes off his jacket, his shirt practically see through due to sweat, saying that they’re snacks, until it’s revealed to be plastic spiders “Sink Spider!” Annie proclaimed, until Winnie the Pooh came out to give him real chocolate bars. “I’ll give them to who is cute! Say ‘yay’!”

People cheer, only for him to feign nervousness and say that he can’t choose. So he throws at random.

Finishing off with Michi e no Tabiji (which Takanosuke drops down again for another circle pit), and Ai, they declare “last song” and head backstage.

Encore call doesn’t last long, before they come back for another MC to start, Annie saying that it’s been really fun. He talks about a radio interview that the drummer Bikky gave lately. They start talking about what I believe might have been costumes that they liked/noticed and he points at me and about three others.

“Sink Spider”, before heading right into it. Iesu probably has the most fun furi choruses of the night. Two peace signs right in the guys faces “Yeah.!”, knock wrists together, hand pump, especially with Annie and Takanosuke looking so hyped to see us excited. And what Chaqla set would be complete without Playback!!?

Chaqla are always a blast live. The guys were constantly getting into the webbing hanging from the ceiling, Winnie the Pooh occasionally having to come free them or their instruments.

Must see band for a full one man

Eh what negative news? What did I miss???

The most I’ve seen is that they weren’t releasing a time table. After a lot of backlash on X crossroad relented and will be releasing the time each band will play.

It’s also the lack of available food, no re-entry, and the fact that it’s seated (two floors as well. I’ll be on the balcony, for instance)

What a genius move…. They just have to resign to the fact that not everyone wants to watch every band on the line up instead of indirectly ‘forcing’ the audience to be there from the get go with no idea who is playing when. and 30 minutes for instrument change??? Maybe its limitations of the venue but I have been to venues outside of Japan where they have automation that allows shifting of drum sets within minutes.

went to the official site to read the news; yikes. Food & drinks have to be pre-ordered, else you are on your own. For a 9 hour event (my own estimation for a 7-8 band line up. And coupled with their 30min instrument change….) with no rentry, they expect the audience to pack lunch and dinner and a 3 litre tumbler? Since they have no food & drink vendors to answer to, why don’t they allow re-entry so the audience can get food and drinks? Just cos they want the audience to watch every band…

With these conditions, releasing the timetable will at most help the audience decide when to enter and when to bail cos they can’t leave once inside. If I’m the organiser, I will just put the 2 most popular bands as the opener and closer.

Two weeks before I went to a small indoor metal festival in Hamburg, the event was approx. the same lenght as this Crossoad Fest.

You had the possibility to reenter the location for whatever reason, but they are no food vendors in close proximity. Since just a few weeks, they do have a small vendor window inside the club where they sell all sorts of snacks (think chocolate bars, sausages, pretzels,…). The whole time they were long lines in front of it and the staff were quite stressed and overwhelmed - they obviously did not foresee this demand

NiJYUrock PAniC x PANiC Tour 11/06 @ Club Phase Takadanobaba

An earlier Taiban today, so I figured I’d go do something else to help pass some time. Why not hit up the Square Enix Collaboration Cafe for their latest theme, Final Fantasy IX 25th anniversary.

Almost too cute to choose, but…

Peak “VK bandmen posting thirst traps on the Gram” energy.

And while I’m in Shinjuku, why not try and find some good deals at PureSound?

Spoiler Alert: Neither of these are real LPs. But, they were a decent price for collectors items.

I guess the SID entry on VK.gy needs to be updated. I should go do that.

Realizing that I don’t have time to go home, I stash my bags in a locker and head for the venue. But this still gives me just under an hour to kill, so let’s see what Book Off Takadanobaba has.

Needless to say, I think my miscellaneous music shopping is done for the trip.

Anyways…

A62 today, getting me a fourth row off centre spot. The Panic x Panic tour has a playlist full of nothing but Panic! at the Disco. Fitting.

Again, I just went to go check merch prices, and an obangya is already edging near my spot. Nope, my spot.

I’ve never really listened to Splendid God Giraffe much, but they were pretty good. Both the guitarist and bassist got a solo opportunity each, and the vocalist was covered in sweat after only two songs. No setlist yet, but they did play Dirty Honey for sure.

I also noticed a few of their fans recording, and I had heard from others that they’re one of those bands who are photo-video friendly, so I snapped a couple photos without disturbing others.

By the time the set’s ended, she’s pretty much pressing up against me and I just want to ask “can I help you, ma’am?”, but I don’t want to make any enemies. The person beside me vacates, so I take a half step to the centre and she just sneaks in beside me. Welcome to the fourth row, ma’am.

Mathilda have introduced a 2000 yen tier to their two shots. Wonder what that one is.

Mathilda were avoiding their heaviest songs, keeping in touch with the theme of this tour. Once done, Qu starts his standard activity of brushing his teeth as if to rid his mouth of a foul taste. Finding their setlists is very hit and miss on Instagram, so got nothing for you. It was good, it was Mathilda.

I chat with someone from the RarezHut discord (Tom from Pennsylvania) and we talk about a 2shot ticket he got for Mathilda. Turns out, the tier system update is regarding the talk time. 2000¥ comes with regular 30 seconds, but the 1000¥ now is just “take your cell phone picture and go”

Misui is super fun. I didn’t see it so much last time I saw them with Sick2, but they keep it super energetic. They earned some cheki money. Managed to get only one repeat.

Kakuriyo Panda is another one of those bands that I’ve slept on until now. They’re good and their songs showcased every member well, but they win the award for most disjointed furi experience.

The left side in front of the bassist were fully engaged. The right only half of the time. The centre was either half-assed, or non-existent. A girl in between the right and centre Saizen wasn’t even moving. I felt like I couldn’t trust to look forward, because only the left was really doing it “right”.

The vocalist does a call and response. Nobody. Tries again on the next song, one very loud gya right behind me responds. The lady to my right, who had been a statue for the last two bands, decided to start moving and headbanging now. Just very jumbled mentally.

The vocalist wears a Panda Head, by the way. In case you didn’t know.

They’ve finally moved on from Panic! At the Disco. During sound check, Ruimaru comes out to entertain us for a minute

Vivarush are next, and they’re the ones I gave my ticket money too. Maybe I’m feeling guilty from missing them last trip. And I can say that they’ve gotten some new songs with some very challenging furi. But they still have time for setlist mainstay Natural Bicycle, complete with two pauses where we all squat down and they talk for an inordinate amount of time just to make us sore.

Ruimaru speaks very quickly, but he did mention something about oshis and honmeis (the first time I’ve heard a bandman openly acknowledging the concept) then asked about Vivarush. Very few people respond to him, which he takes as a sign that he needs to promote harder.

He jumps down into the audience, and picks a lady in sixth row to lay down next to. I think he’s talking to her, telling her what to expect. He climbs on top of her, and starts talking about Instagram. Probably something like “you’ll follow us, you’ll follow me, right?” He passes me, crotch in my face, and does the same to the fan dead centre in Saizen. Talk about aggressive marketing techniques.

Up next to last is BabyKingdom, a band that Brandon’s friend Jeremy really came to see but unfortunately missed due to Matenrou Opera. I can see why. The guitarist is great.

They had the best turnout of the night so far. Five full rows of almost complete engagement, except for the lady on my left clutching her Ga to Chou towel. Unique furi, unique call and responses, what’s not to love?

Ga to Chou is the closer of the night, when trying to refresh myself on what they sound like, this message pops up on Spotify.

I absolutely will not.

Their fanbase has grown significantly in the last year, because they beat BabyKingdom in fan enthusiasm and merch count. They also beat Misui in set heaviness. Guess everything’s coming up Go to Church lately.

Cali≠Gari “18” 11/07 @ Heaven’s Rock Saitama

Now, this is very, very important…

Do I have the right Heaven’s Rock?

glances at ticket, glances at concert listing, glances again at ticket

I hope.

But first….

Luna Sea Cafe time!

I get there after a quick Hanzomon line ride to Shibuya, on the 7th floor of Tsutaya Bookstore. Footage from the 2015 and 2018 Lunatic Fests are playing on the screens. I’m given a QR code to place my orders, and I’m given a choice of four specialty drinks. The Rosier (a fruit punch flavoured drink), True Blue (a blue raspberry/jelly drink with tonic water), a Be Awake (Mojito), and a Gin no Tsuki (citrus flavoured).

The entrees are a choice between a shrimp burger (which I am half allergic to), or a plate of dark curry and rice with boiled egg and fried chicken.

For dessert, a fruit, gelato and jelly parfait.

The standout was really the parfait. The curry was passable, but some of the items on the plate were a little lukewarm for my tastes.

After I finished, I went to go leave a note on the messages wall, and then took a couple pictures of the drum kit and costume display.

After shipping off two packages, it’s time to head to

double checks again.

Heaven’s Rock Saitama!

You may remember this as the venue that I went to by mistake when Duel Jewel were playing in Utsunomiya last year.

Luckily, it’s not a mistake and I’m in the right place!

See!

About 150th in the venue today, putting me in the back half, but not very back. Seeing the room start to fill up, I’m kind of regretting not using the washroom ahead of time. Let’s see how long I can hold out for.

The guys head out onto the floor, starting up their instruments until Shuuji takes the stage to start off with the first track off of 18, Ai yori aoku.

Not a lot of banter or antics with the guys, they like to keep the focus on just performing a high quality set. The star of Cali≠Gari live is Kenjirou on bass, imo, but Ao does pretty well for himself providing background vocals and pumping the crowd up while he’s on guitar.

They continue on with mainly songs off at 18, including NipponiaNippon, x and Hello World.

But, there are also songs from earlier in their career featured, like Galaxy、Kusouu Carnival, Ai no Kawaki or Mass Genshou Variation 1 off of Dai6. Dai7 got Mahoraba Yuushuu, Haikara Satsubatsu Haiso Zessan, Wazurai and Tokyo Rose wo Monde Kurabu.

After playing a few more from 18 to round out the set, they’re off for eight minutes while the audience tries to keep a consistent pace for the claps during the encore call.

They head back on to play another off 18, and then surprise us with one from 10, School Zone. They finish off with the ending track from the new album, Scrapyard koujou wa itsumo yuuyake de.

Now, I did receive a small scrap of paper. It’s supposed to be a “two part ticket”, each day receiving one half of a set of two tokens that earns you one of two live limited singles, but only if you attend today and tomorrow.

Too bad, guys. I like you and all, but tomorrow, I’m going to…

Sorry to ask but I can’t help it.

…what was your budget for this?

I won’t get mad if you ignore this post

wow Mucc’s demotape price really got “cheap”

They had a version behind the glass priced at double that, but I guess this one may have been opened before, or used?

I pre-paid for most expenses (plane, tickets and 20% of accommodation) beforehand. I know my credit is eating half of this, but I still had about 2500 in the bank that I’ve been gradually drawing from for merch and other expenses. I tend to stick to conbini food and the occasional fast food to cut down on costs

Not buying as much merch as last time, so I’d say the overall price is still well into the 6,000 range once you factor in flight and concert tickets.

Lunatic Fest Day 1 11.08 @ Makuhari Messe

What? Were you expecting anything else?

I decide to aim to get here a little before 11 am. On the way here. The Keiyo line passes by a Disney Resort and most of the white tourists get off/on there. Nope, I’ve got a different type of amusement park I’m heading to.

I follow the crowd, only to find that I need to turn back around to the exhibition hall behind me to go exchange the wristband. About 20 minutes later, I’m good to go back to the main exhibit halls.

There is both a food festival, and a Kat-Tun concert in the area, including a huge lineup for merch tents for “Little Glee Monster”, whatever that is.

Just the lobby

I’m not even sure the exact count of people here, but it’s probably the biggest crowd I’ve ever been in here, by far.

I’m actually surprised it went by so quickly.

It’s still a good 10 minute walk back to where I was, so I finally get to the downstairs area right outside of Halls 9-11, passing by some food trucks and the sit down eating area to catch the last Novelbright song.

I head up to the right side of the crowd, as far up as I can for lynch.

I settle into a space, when one wild eyed guy in the crowd tries to pick a fight with another one. The other guy’s buddy puts distance between them, saying “eh, eh, gomen nasai, gomen”, trying to get him to leave. He menacingly points again, then slinks off further into the crowd.

Starting out with Obvious, a song off of XIII, I thought the sound sounded a bit muddled, so I put my earbuds in to see if it would improve. Marginally.

They then surprise the crowd with a Luna Sea cover, Precious (this, combined with the next song, probably got the most audience attention of the whole set)

Hazuki then calls out Luna Sea’s J for a bass feature on Adore. They point to the little drone they have on stage , which has flown in between J and Hazuki to take footage from different angles.

I can’t help but notice that the camera sliding along the bottom of the stage keeps capturing angles of the members, but particularly Hazuki and Reo from a diagonal angle, creating an illusion of multiple Hazuki/Reos.

Changing it up a bit from the recent tour, they go into Gallows. Hazuki calls “Last song” with Bringer, but then asks the crowd if they want one more and ends with Invader.

Godland is up next, and I’ll admit that I don’t know anything about the project other than Morrie of Dead End/Creature Creature being involved, and Sugizo playing support guitar.

But if I stuck around for every band that I “should” stay for, I’d have no time to go get merch.

It’s quite the selection. I get a Lunatic Fest shirt, Dir en Grey Gauze shirt, three acrylic stands, a Lunatic Fest towel and wristband.

Time to run back, but I still end up missing SID’s first song. SID are SID. Inoffensive, not super interesting.

What’s more interesting to me is the fact that I’ve discovered the sitting section. The audience is meant to be in Halls 9 and 10. The “close” section being Hall 9, and stragglers being in Hall 10. The back half of Hall 10 has essentially turned into the “I want to sit down” area, and we just watch the monitors. Perfect, 10/10. Would sit again.

Next up is Siam Sophia, which are, as you could tell, an amalgamation between Siam Shade and Sophia. The drummer Junji will be filling in for Shinya during Luna Sea’s sets.

Siam Shade’s Hideki has the first half of the set, performing the more upbeat stuff. Mitsuru takes over for a Sophia ballad, 青空の破片 then the energy starts building with the next one until we get to a newer favourite of theirs, あなたが毎日直面している世界の憂鬱 before they head back to 1997’s Machi (街).

I take this opportunity to go hit up a food truck, but they do have a couple of collaboration songs between the two bands.

It’s a total zoo. Lineups are crazy everywhere, unlike Dream Fest where I could find one or two trucks with barely any wait. The truck with the shortest lineup is the “American burgers and fries” truck. So I opt for a bacon cheeseburger, cheese fries, a melon soda and a sugar donut.

About a 30 minute wait in total. There seems to have been a short intermission, where an MC came on to talk for a bit before introducing My First Story.

I was sitting down to eat for the first couple of their songs, but I came back to the sitting section to catch most of the set. Pretty standard electronic tinged metalcore-lite.

So people start crowding around and standing up in the sitting section, so I realize it’s futile to resist for TM Revolution

Our Lord, such a dude

Now, I can’t say I’ve been following the guy. But hot damn, does he look good for his age. He even takes off his shirt a couple of songs in to show everyone how buff he is.

“Buff TM Revolution isn’t real. He can’t hurt you.”

Anyways, enough abs.

So, he comes in with a whole ass marching band in the back row of the stage. After the first couple of songs, he dismisses the band, but not before getting everyone to send out best wishes to Shinya, who is still fighting his brain tumour.

A couple more, and he pauses to address the crowd. He gets Sugizo and Inoran to come out for a double guitar feature for two songs, and finished with probably his most well known hit, Heart of Sword. During the Sugizo/Inoran segment, he starts laughing uncontrollably. According to his Twitter, it’s because he made a mistake when announcing either the song or Inoran’s name. They forgive him.

So now it comes time for this nifty Disney ride. It’s called “the push”. If you’ve heard people say that Japanese people never push their way to the front, you’ve heard incorrect. It’s just that instead of pushing just themselves through, it’s pushing everyone in front of them into the desired direction. So guess it’s time to ride The Push. It gets me to a spot where I can’t even really see the stage because of a wall of 5’9 guys directly in front of me, so the monitor on the side of the stage will suffice.

Dir en Grey head out gradually, audience members of all ages and genders calling for their favourite member. A familiar PV starts up in the background, and we get the usual set openers of Ningen o Kaburu and The Devil in Me.

They do change it up just a little, when they bring Sugizo out for a violin feature for 空音の跫音 from Arche. Sugizo seems a bit irritated with something. Keeps gesturing at the techs. A slight feedback is heard during Kyo’s vocal parts around this time.

We do get Vinushka, Saku and The Final, which is helpful for me as I didn’t make it out to the Withering to Death/Uroboros tours for obvious reasons.

After they close out with Utafumi, an English message flashes on screen “We believe that the future of Luna Sea will shine even brighter”

Time to ride the push back to the sitting area for Brahman. I pick a spot right underneath a monitor, so that no one can block my view.

They get Sugizo to guitar feature on their first song, Shoki Shodo. After a few more, J is next to make an appearance for Ace of Spades and a cover of Iconoclasm by Buck-Tick. They play a few more.

One song had a slideshow of people, their ages, and a blurb beneath their photo. I can’t tell from the photos in between if this is about people who died in a nuclear disaster, people who helped them with their albums, or people who died in the making of their albums.

Just a small joke, they’re actually really good. There’s a reason why they have their own festival being held in two weekends from now.

Toshi-low stops to say a message to all of the Luna Sea fans in the crowd. At first, it’s a bit of banter. Then, he says “everyone here is probably a bangya” (in spirit, I think he means). He then shifts to talking about Cancer, presumably referring to Shinya’s situation. While I don’t have a translation handy, the crowd is visibly moved by his speech.

He speaks about recovery after disaster, which is a cause that he shares with…

He calls for the final song of the night, and brings Sugizo out one more time for a violin feature for Mangetsu no yuube.

By now, I’ve stood back up during Toshi-low’s speech and final song, and it doesn’t take long afterwards for the MC to come out with a special guest, Shouji Noriko!

She’s a long time VK journalist, and is personal friends with Luna Sea. She gives a pep talk to the crowd.

Soon enough, the lights are down and it’s time for Luna Sea.

After they play Tonight and Dejavu, Ryuichi addresses the crowd. That he’d happy to be here with so many “seniors and juniors”, and that “here we stand, four bandmen” before thanking everyone for all their messages of support.

The set continues, Junji giving it his all. Several times, the camera angle changes to the stage drone and the members all look at it knowingly. A cannon ribbon goes off for Wish, as is standard. I’m nowhere near close enough to catch anything.

Encore clapping lasts about 10 minutes before they head back on, carrying a red Lunatic Fest towel. Ryuichi calls out members of just about every band there before he calls out the final guest. On drums…Shinya! He comes out, feet shuffling, his face looking happy but struggling a bit to speak. They help him sit at the drumkit, next to Junji, who is still playing.

Ryuichi announces the last song…Storm. Getting guest vocals from several of the vocalists there, it’s then that I decide to take my leave to beat the worst of the rush.

Lunatic Fest Day 2 11/09 @ Makuhari Messe

So today I let myself relax at the apaato a bit longer to finish up my live report. Looking over, I realize that it’s 11:00 am, and that I should probably get moving.

Walking the 20 minutes to Etchujima station, my projected arrival is at around 12:25. That should be at least enough time to go check out the merch selection, right?

Turns out, there’s barely any lineup, so I can more or less walk right up and only wait a couple minutes

Kuroyume shirts? Sweet!

Only M size left. Should I buy one as an aspirational target? Better just get a towel. For MUCC, I get a couple acrylic stands and this nifty little guy

Plenty of time to run and catch MUCC.

I get there just as 9mm Parabellum Bullet is finishing up. Time to make my way as far forward as I can.

Homura Uta as the opening SE, are we getting any?

Not likely, as they’re playing very much what they’ve been playing for the last year. Opening up with Ai no Uta, they still manage to get a good reaction from the crowd.

I never really got a great look at their latest drummer before, and I…

MUCC are still fun and all, but other than playing the newest single, Never Evergreen, there really isn’t much new to see here.

Heading back to the sitting section for Ling Tosite Sigure, a crowd of people rushing to the right side of the stage to get a good spot for the band coming after.

While I’m not familiar with them too much beyond knowing about TK’s super highs that make it sound like Tilian Pearson got kicked in the nuts.

From the buzz on Twitter, fans are happy that they got a couple older songs.

During the set, I feel a towel on my legs. I look in the direction, and see a familiar face.

It’s Lockie, from Australia! The tall guy that I met at Fucker Halloween. Ling Tosite Sigure finished up, and he walks over and we chat a bit about what we’ve been up to this weekend, the previous acts, the upcoming acts. We decide that we’re okay with hanging back for Kuroyume.

So the band comes on, along with their support guitarist and drummer. Kiyoharu has a button down shirt and this bandana on his head, looking like your uncle dressing up as a gang member for Halloween.

And we’re off right out of the gate with a cover of Luna Sea’s Blue Transparency to hype up the crowd, but apparently not enough, because then we get Dejavu? Will this be a set of Luna Sea covers???

Nope, they wouldn’t do that. They launch into C.Y. Head after a short MC, followed by Spray. Guess it’s more of a punk era Kuroyume set. Kiyoharu’s chatting a bit in between each set, Announcing his first guest of the night, Sugizo (he’s guesting for just about everyone, isn’t he?), to perform guitar on Shounen.

But one guest isn’t quite enough, so he calls out the two vocalists of RottenGraffty to provide guest vocals on Kouishou After Effect.

He closes off with one more MC, where he asked how many songs they had left. 2? No, only 1? Seems like a waste to talk so much, huh? The audience finds it amusing.

So the final song, Like A Angel, Kiyoharu seems a little disappointed at the lukewarm reaction for the first part of the song. But it picks up, the audience engaging more and singing the chorus as the song goes on.

So now seems like a good opportunity for Lockie and I to go grab some food. The hotdog stand miraculously has only a five minute wait. We take it upstairs to talk about some more.

He mentioned running into Kou from Damned at a bar he frequents (no, he didn’t divulge which bar). The topic of him and Sakura’s recent apology for their comments about the Prime Minister came up. He said that he’s still kind of confused as to why an apology was necessary and that a couple of other band guys were ripping on them for it (“ha, ha, you had to apologize to foreigners!”).

We do hear Uverworld, about half way done their set, perform a cover of Rosier. So we decide to wrap up and head back down there for the last half.

Catching the tail end, I decide to remain where we are for The Yellow Monkey while he’s off getting a drink.

I’ve never followed them very closely, but I did recognize a few songs. Near the end, they played their newest single, Cat City followed by the classic Love, Love Show, which got the best reaction of the set.

So we both want to move closer for Buck-Tick. Lockie jokes that this could actually be a joint festival between the two bands. Luna-Tick.

No? Worth a shot.

Vocals recently are being shared live between Imai and Hoshino. Starting off with Raijin Fujin Resonance Rising, we have trippy effects in the background.

Following with stuff off the the newest album, the electronic/industrial tinge and stage effects have us in a trance.

They play their most recent single, Shibuya Hurry Upper after a short psychedelic movie in the background.

Get to party, yeah, get down to party, yeah…

Snaps out of it. Oh shit, how long was I out for?

After they play the b-side, they announce a special guest, J, to help them with Tiki Tiki Boom. Imai gives a shout out to “Boys, Girls and Lunatic Babies”. They finish the set off with one more Subrossa song, Gabriel no Rappa.

Anticipating a huge rush forward for the final band, we opt to head back a bit to sit for the 5-10 minutes during final changeover that it takes Luna Sea to get ready.

I guess we’ll have to see how many repeats we get from yesterday.

They open with last night’s closer, Storm, followed by last night’s opener, Tonight.

Ryuichi then addresses the crowd, talking again about being able to meet with both seniors and juniors and asking everyone if they’re having fun. He announced the first different track of the night, End of Sorrow. Followed by Shine, and my personal favourite of the three, Gravity.

A few more later, we get Time is Dead, the only song off of the first album that they’ve played. Rosier is a must-play for every show, but then we get Up to You, from Shine as the main set closer. Shine got a ton of attention today, didn’t it?

The encore clapping starts, and we hang back by the pillar to be in a prime escape position, but we still want to at least see the song and the collection of guests. Ryuichi calls out members of every band to come out on stage for their last song, Wish. But not before re-introducing Shinya! He’s walking a bit easier today, and managed to get himself up the steps to the drumkit on his own.

Yesterday, after I left, he had said that he hopes to be able to play one song for their upcoming Christmas show next month.

Let’s Wish

I would actually love to hear a recording of this, Uverworld are okay as far as bands go, used to be way more in to them around 2011 ‘Life 6 Sense’ era but I do think Takuya has a great voice!

Flashback to two and a half weeks ago.

After having to fret over Canada Post delivering my ticket on time due to a solid two week strike followed by rolling strikes, here I am getting on my 13+ hr flight in Toronto. I receive a text from my dad just as I’m sitting down…”a package came for you”

Balls.

So I ask him to get a quote on what it would take to ship it here, but that I would contact StarWave to see what they could do.

As it turns out, they told me that they would just send me a new one to the apartment. Sweet!

Along with that, I receive a standard bulk email addressed to all VIPs, outlining the rules of the after party.

-Cost is 6000¥ all you can drink + food

-No coercing members to drink by giving excessive tickets.

-No monopolizing members, they get to choose who to talk to.

-No personal questions

-Don’t become disorderly

Y’know, the usual.

So with that out of the way, I have everything I’m going to need for the show. I opt to not be at the meet and greet right on time, just because there will be time for talking later and I don’t know the other fans really.

So they have us pay the drink fee in advance. I pick up enough merch for four 2shots, and then I head into the main room of Shibuya Rex. I get my drink and introduce myself to Miria, the new bassist (previously of La’Veil MizeriA, which I point out to him that I’ve seen before). I also get in a quick Hajimemashite to Nazuki (new rhythm guitarist, also from La’Veil MizeriA) before Kakeru heads over to talk to me for a couple minutes, observing me wearing last year’s Killing me Softly shirt. He quickly pulls Majyu over to formally introduce us before taking to the platform to let people know that the meet and greet portion is over, and to come back in one hour for doors.

I’m feeling Yakiniku. There’s a nice, quick place not too far away from Shibuya station.

True to their word, they didn’t charge us again for drink. Number 15, which got me the perfect spot. Second row dead centre. A built in furi refresher in the Saizen, but no potential person in front of me who won’t move. There’s even a little gap in Saizen just big enough for me to step forward when they need an unbroken Saizen barrier.

Even a spot to store my bag. This is first class. 10/10

And they haven’t even started yet.

Starting off with Zero and a few more from the first two EPs, Fata Morgana had Kakeru leading the audience in furi. After one more from the second EP, they head into Afterimage, the highlight of the night, imo.

Kakeru heads backstage for a break. While that’s happening, Nazuki leads the audience in a saizen ramming session followed by an organized member call (kind of like how Kane to Juusei used to).

Kakeru comes back out, and it’s time for the block of new songs that can be found on the Flare EP.

After playing Succubus, they play a couple of the singles from last year.

For the last song of the main set, Awake, we finally get to ram the Saizen with the full band there. Except I won’t be ramming anyone, because there’s a gap, and I’m the only one near it who wants to take one for the team.

After the first couple rounds, Kakeru does his “lean back into the crowd” bit. Except it’s not so much “leaning” and more “vault myself backwards into the audience, knowing that Katie won’t drop me”. His back lands directly on top of me and I stabilize him with my upper body as some other gya grab the rest of him and get him back to the stage. He repeats this on either side of the stage, the left side almost dropping him.

He’s jumping into the crowd now, throwing people at us bent over.

For the final couple of rounds, he makes sure to pull me into Saizen one last time and pats my head a bit.

They head off, Kakeru launching his towel as far as he can.

Encore call is right away, and they don’t keep us waiting long. Kakeru comes out first for a solo song, L. It was then that I fully noticed that the hair bands/wristbands they were selling were of the same fabric as the costumes. Neat. The rest of the band comes out for Never Fade Memory and Phantom Pain, Kakeru guiding us in the furi for that one too.

But one encore isn’t enough, is it?

They come out in t-shirts, and everyone says a few words before they play Place, and then Lucifer, the other saizen ramming song. He falls on me once again and I do several rounds of bending over to take my hits in the Saizen. Finishing with Alive, we have another impressive, beefy setlist.

Time for 2shots!

Nazuki isn’t actually particularly tall. I’m just kneeling because I was feeling goofy.

On the way out, I finally exchange my ticket for our perks (Flare special edition jacket and limited tshirt).

Funny thing? This is the only concert in two and a half weeks where I didn’t feel sore for after. Huh

Dragging myself back to the apaato, I only have enough time to ditch my other bag and pack the last of my Halloween kitkat candies from home before I make my way to the after party at PetitMoa.

Aaaaand, my cell data is fucked. Doesn’t matter what I do, it won’t work. Shit. Will I have to go through this entire night with only my tenuous grasp on the Japanese language, as I get increasingly drunk?

Turns out, they’ve got Wifi. Night saved.

At first, it’s just the VIPs, bartenders and two Zeke Deux staff. There are snacks on the tables, but I’d rather take a bar spot.

Kakeru, Nazuki and Miria come in, makeup wiped off and in plain clothes. They say that Haruka and Majyu would be there eventually and explained how the system worked.

The entrance fee got us access to food and all we can drink…for us. But if we want to buy a drink for the members, it’s 1000¥ each. I pick up one ticket for each member (including Majyu), and I give one candy to each of them with it. Kakeru takes this opportunity to introduce me to the staff members.

So the two other Japanese ladies at the bar strike up a convo with me sometime after Haruka and Majyu arrive. They ask if I live in Japan, who my favourite member is, etc. The conversation expands to other bands I’ve seen/like, how many times I’ve seen Zeke Deux. I tell them about seeing Kakeru around a lot while he’s canvassing.

For talking to me and being patient, I hand them each a kitkat.

Kakeru shows off a bottle he got for everyone to share…Y by Yoshiki!

I end up having three shots of it, and while Kakeru is chilling at the bar, I ask him if he knows Dadadan. He said that he does, so I type in my phone that Western Twitter wasn’t too pleased with Yoshiki’s reaction to the parody. And then I mentioned the one person who delivered that infamous line.

“Hmm, yes. I heard. But, I like Yoshiki.”

“Hai, Yoshiki no ongaku ga suki desu” I say back.

I may have also said “Kanpai, ikemen” as he got his latest drink.

Anyways, pizza arrived. Part of our admission. They pass us a cheese and a pepperoni to share between the three of us, plus any members that could choose to sit with us.

And they do. Miria is first to sit down. I compliment him on the show and say that I had even more fun this time than last time.

Kakeru calls Majyu over. He seems to want to start playing songs. He starts trying to get something going with Endless Rain by X Japan. I sing the English parts out loud when he starts trailing off. He gives up on that one after 30 more seconds and goes into Wish by Luna Sea, which also loses steam. They give up. Guess the members are a few deep. To be fair, so am I.

He comes over to the bar to sit down with us. He tells them basically the same thing I told them, and mentioned a few of the concerts he saw me at. So I told them that the last trip was 10 weeks of pretty much non-stop shows, and this trip has also been non-stop shows.

I show Kakeru a picture of what Full painted in 80 minutes while singing, and told him about me getting my records signed up him last year. One of the ladies at the bar knew about Guniw Tools so she knew exactly who I was talking about.

I also talk a bit to the bartender, who had an old flyer from an event they held with Hide-Zou and Tsunehito of D. I mentioned seeing Tsunehito with Hizaki. He smiles and said that Hizaki is a semi-regular there.

Nazuki comes by us once, so does Majyu. Miria comes back for seconds. Haruka doesn’t sit with us, but I do see him at the bar and explain via translation that I was sorry that my friends and I left Dark Princes Night early to go to Matenrou Opera, to which he said was all good.

Before I know it, it’s time to leave. About half of people are still there. The members see us out, and I manage to catch an Uber back home, almost in one piece. More specifically, several small pieces on the pavement. That’s what I get for getting hammered.
