I LARPed as a bangya for 10 weeks straight, here’s what happened to my brain

MUCC Daydream Tour 11/06 @Zepp Shinjuku

Back to where I started my non-stop VK live extravaganza, only this is a rare daytime show, a matinee if you will.

Yesterday was Yukke’s birthday, so let’s hope there might be something today to give it that extra special touch.

B38 today. Too bad there are over 600 A tickets. Wait, more déjà vu to Diaura.

Here’s hoping I can unload some of the last of my Cheezies.

About 690th number called, now to take my place. I toss my Cheezies in on the way down, taking a photo of Yukke’s birthday display.

You know what? I could decide to try and squeeze in tighter. But I really don’t feel like craning my neck to see over everyone.

Opening with Aka, the audience already with hands in the air.

The beat of Daikirai starts, the crowd surfers already visibly on people’s shoulders, ready to be launched over top of the front row. “Kirai! Kirai! Kirai!”

The first real headbanging of the set starts up during Mr Liar, and we then get a pack of songs that they previously covered during Luv Together with Siren, Ai no Uta, and G.G, all of which had the audience just as excited as the previous time.

Half way through, Tatsuro sitting down during an extended instrumental intro for 6 song Haribote no Otona, Yukke with the stand up bass. Tatsuro reminds us that it was Yukke’s birthday yesterday.

Second half set highlights include Aku Justice and Nirvana.

For the final song, My World, Miya jumps into the pit area mid song, jumping back out about 20 seconds later before throwing his water bottle into the crowd. The occasional crowd surfer still making their way over the barrier.

Before heading off stage, he jumps down once more to high five some people.

Tatsuro finally comes back on, asking us if we loved their set. Applause. “That’s a lie!” he half slurs back. He talks about their upcoming event with Dezert, hopes that people are looking forward to it.

Yukke then comes back and they banter back and forth for a while, eventually joined by Miya, and then the support members.

After a looooong talk, they eventually get started with the encore, playing Heide and Mad Yack before Tatsuro closes it off with the final song, asking “Are you ready motherfuckers?”, with us rhythmically clapping to Ranchu

At some point, you have to prioritize being close or getting to the merch table early.

But I do have to take a Detour outside to get to the escalators down to the merch table.

And who is waiting outside for me?

Yep.

Only it’s a little curious. I didn’t mention going to this concert yesterday.

He’s leaning against the barricade, and I’m unsure for a second whether to go up to him or go down and get merch first. He waves at me, so I guess that answers it.

He hasn’t taken out his fliers yet, so he makes sure to hand me one as if I haven’t already joked about having so many.

We switch off between English and Japanese. He asks if I know when I’m coming back. “Eeto, Shiranai” followed with a laugh. He then said that he really does want to visit Canada. So I tell him that around this time, it becomes cold. “Watashi no tame ni, koko wa atatakai desu”.

So I ask him if he’ll still be canvassing in the evening.

“Ah, unfortunately busy” in Japanese.

“Ah, sou. Ashita wa Ebisu Liquidroom ni ikimasu ka?”

“Maybe, between that and the live at ________” in English.

Hmm, how do I ask this tactfully? In this particular scenario, I don’t know if I really can. So I don’t.

Noting the awkward silence, he decides to get back to canvassing and pats me farewell on the shoulder.

Well, not how I imagined me attempting to ask him out for drinks.

I round out the trip by picking up a copy of Mucc’s latest single, given that I already have a T-shirt, bag, towel…

Guess it’s time to head back.

Oh wait…

Xaa Xaa monthly concept live - Suicide in November - 11/06 @Meguro Rockmaykan

B5 tonight, there are 180 A tickets in front, several towards the end no showing.

Still puts me pretty close to the back. Almost worth moving a bit farther back to be next to …@ridley !

So today is a part of their 12 monthly concept lives? Although I’ve never seen them so after watching, I really couldn’t tell you how it would differ from any given live of theirs. The drummer An did comment afterwards that the songs were meant to capture the atmosphere of the RockMayKan, whatever that means.

The guys come out, in orange splatted white suits.

From the very back, I could still participate in most of the furi, although my neck and back are a little stiff.

Musically, there was obviously nothing to complain about. I don’t listen to a ton of XaaXaa in my rotation, so I couldn’t place the songs exactly and they have yet to post a Setlist anywhere.

After five minutes of encore calling, they head back out for a couple more, energy just as consistent as the rest of the live.

Lights go up, and we find ourselves in a good position to head to the merch table. After buying five cheki each, and I hand over my Cheezies, we get the hell out of there and move to the exit, where we exchange a cheki each so that I can have all four members.

Walking to Meguro station, we part ways realizing that we probably won’t run into each other again.

I finally touch back down at Monzen Nakacho station. Perhaps I can stop at a McDonalds on the way back to my apartment.

…er, wait a minute…

Where’s my wallet?

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

So the next hour is spent emailing both Meguro Rockmaykan and XaaXaa’s management to see who has it.

The Rockmaykan get back to me shortly after to confirm that they do.

Okay, crisis averted for now. I can pick it up there anytime from 4 pm tomorrow.

Just enough time for me to make it to the next show.

Oh are you going to that? Me too! :joy:

Merry’s Ram Fest 2024 w/ Kein/Ryutaro Arimura/Cali ≠ Gari 11/07 @Ebisu Liquidroom

I won’t be making advance sales to this one, you know…because wallet. But thankfully I have just enough on the IC card to go get it back.

But I do get to Meguro Rockmaykan at 4:00 as they said, to pick up my wallet. A friendly but gruff looking security guard knows what I’m talking about right away. After thanking him profusely and making sure nothing went missing, I head back to the station to get off at the next stop, Ebisu.

I stop to take a picture of the sign outside when I hear an “excuse me”, I turn around to see the couple that I had been walking beside, and the man asks me if I’m Katie. Fellow board lurkers! So we talk for a bit, and they are from Germany and here for a couple weeks, catching a handful of shows.

The advance sales have all closed, so now it’s really us just waiting for the show to start.

A383. Oh well, I need to grab a few copies of the Merry single at the end and I don’t feel like being trapped in a huge crowd sweating my makeup off. I’d rather just be able to come and go to the merch area as I please.

Cali≠gari take the stage. And boy do I regret not seeing them sooner. Mind you, it was between that and missing a $350 bar night with Fukuro, so I’m glad that I took that.

They open with Tokyo Urban Yakouchuu off of the new album, followed by Ryuudou Rondo and Ranchou. The entire audience getting active with Ka~rakutta.

Half way through, they play their first non-17 track, Hitotsu no Marchen.

They really are a fun band live, and at the third last song, I almost lose it.

I remember this song. It’s my favourite Cali≠gari song…and for the longest time since my early 20s…I just could not find it again! I’ve searched high and low, spotify, my own library, YouTube. No luck.

Until tonight. Haikara. Satsubatsu. Haiso. Zessan, from Dai9. I see the problem. The song labelled as this on my phone was labeled incorrectly.

They take it back to 16, with Moero yo Moero.

For the final song, Nero and Yuu of Merry join them on stage for Baka! Baka! Baka! Baka!

Ryutaro

He heads on stage about 15 minutes after Cali≠Gari finished up, to a slower song, Genkeifuirumu.

His “clearing the hair out of his eyes” to interact with the audience” moment comes about half way through the set, complete with Jukyusai where he gets Gara from Merry to join him on stage for them both to sing.

Even the “fan tosses towel at Ryutaro to get him to wave it before he throws it back” is present here. Almost as if his shows have an overall pattern.

He returns back to the centre and his guitar for the last of the set, Rentogen, though. Hair curtain intact again.

Kein

So in this deadman adjacent band, we get two for one. Both Maco and Aie. It actually predates deadman, so maybe I should have been rating deadman adjacent bands on the Kein scale instead…nah, “dead men” is too convenient of a quantifier. We also have another great here in the form of Reo of Gullet/Lynch fame!

Leading with Spiral, off the new album coming in a week and a half, I can feel the raw deadman emanating from the stage.

Throwing it back, we get an Ferris Wheel from before their initial disbandment.

At some point during Kimi no Shindenzu, Aie is kneeling down on stage for a while. Not sure if he was down for a reason or if he was just crabcore posing, but bassist Yuki comes to check on him and he comes up soon after.

For the second to last song, they invite Merry’s bassist Tetsu to join them for keen scare syndrome, another pre-disbandment classic.

Finishing off with Grammy, the last of the deadman energy flowing into us all.

I’ll need to give this 9.5 deadmen out of a possible 10. The half dead man is me, still yet to fully get over my v[neu]mo:nia.

Merry

Opening with the intro to Gendai Stoic, as always. The guys on stage, Gara already shirtless.

But wait? Is this? That drum best? That guitar riff!?!

“Yasashisha!”
“Hai~sensu”
“Yasashisa!”
“Nou~sensu”

Fuck, yes. Where was this at the request live? But you guys delivered me Gendai.

Keeping up with older songs, Lost Generation, originally on Modern Garde, is next. They play a repeater from the last live, Oriental BL Circus.

But the audience really comes alive with Sweet Powder.

So before they go further, Gara has a trick where he takes a sip of something (fake blood I guess) and spits it back out all over his face/chest.

They then head into Hi no Ataranai Basho ~ Hi no Ataranai Yami~, a song that just about every Merry fan knows by now. Finishing off the main set with their 2022 single Yoake Mae.

I decide to head closer to the doors for the encore, bidding goodbye to the friendly German couple. I’d prefer to grab my gear early and get out of there.

They come out again after encore call and after thanking each individual act for joining them and bantering a bit, talking about the next album, they play their latest song for us, Gaga. Pretty decent tune, But that’s not it!

We get our final song of the night, Modern Garde’s Japanese Modernist! Another one of my request night options. After enjoying half, I run to the tables.

I pick up several copies of Gaga because I know some board members are going to want some.

I also pick up a premium cheki for each member.

Geez, by the time I’m done with Merry, it feels like they stole my wallet all over again. No money for Kein or Ryutaro, and Cali≠Gari’s stuff isn’t even out right now. So, I make a point of taking some flyers and scanning the QR code that they’re putting up everywhere. A Setlist maybe?

Nope! A YouTube video, announcing a brand new album and tour next year!

So after double and triple checking to make sure I didn’t lose anything!!!, I head back to the station. Chatting a bit on Instagram with the French gya I met earlier who had chosen Dir en Grey instead, talking about how awesome our shows both were.

Only four reports left…

(Two copies already spoken for)

Cubrick Presents Ni Ten San Ten Volume 77 featuring Rorschach Inc/Superknova/Garakuta/Tokyo Hanayome/Na.Na/Singularity/Deigan 11/08 @Holiday Shinjuku

I get to the area a bit early, and of course I have nothing better to do than sit down in front of the venue eating Lawson Kaarage.

Wait a minute…

Anyways, I watch as I notice at least three bandmen pass by me either coming to or from the Lawson for some last minute supplies, including the guitarist of Na.Na and bassist of Superknova. I head inside after I’m done to chill, seeing someone around who I’ve met a few times before. This time we decide to stick together.

Bella from Australia, who is also on a longer-ish trip, attending shows every couple of days. We shoot the shit so much that I’m having a hard time even taking notes.

Na.Na

Pretty fun, upbeat, but only four Saizen fans. However, Overly Enthusiastic Na.Na fan is back and in her rightful place right front and centre in front of Keiya. I was kind of wondering why someone didn’t come and Save their Saizen, but I remembered Ridley talking about a Razor fan girl who won’t let anyone stand on either side of her. Don’t know if this is the case? She didn’t…seem unfriendly. Just very, very, enthusiastic… as in “I’m afraid she’d accidentally whack me in the face while jumping around”.

Singularity

Pretty decent heavier Kira kira, just not super memorable. Very host like looks, like I could see these guys advertised on one of the billboards outside. But being honest, that applies to most of the bands here so far other than maybe Rorschach or Garakuta.

The vocalist does come down to the barrier to interact with people for a bit during the last song.

Superknova

Heeeey, it’s Kouki from Twitter.

Starting with two of their more well known tracks, Buzz Ranto Year, the furi still super complicated for Dengeki Bilibilibili, even Bella’s having a hard time keeping up with that one.

Kouki, making eyes at half the audience. Can’t say much different from the last time I saw them. Fun times.

Garakuta

They’re a heavier band with some pop breakdowns, or maybe a poppier band with a lot of heavier breakdowns. Hard to tell.

There’s a little girl in front of me! It’s not common in VK, but you do see it sometimes. There are some moments of mosh furi where we’re encouraged to turn around and bump into each other, so I make sure to be more careful.

At the end, the guitarist throws the Setlist at the girl, but a lady in Saizen turns around and grabs it first. Rude!

So who I thought was a 10 year old girl turns around and I see that she’s actually just a really small adult dressed partially in Lolita. I guess that’s why the lady in Saizen didn’t just let her have the Setlist.

Rorschach Inc

So for the third time this trip, we get a Furi tutorial from Yuuri for Anti, as they open the set with that.

Half way through, he instructs us to part for a wall of death, showing us the monster hands he wants us to make while doing it. He jumps down into the crowd, the guitarist Shogo taking over main vocals as Yuuri lets out a scream and we rush the middle, him getting bumped around a few times before he heads back to the stage. Half way through the song, telling us to go back for a round two.

The next song, he takes an opportunity to run in front of the barricade as we hop back and forth.

We get asked for our spot, but I do manage to squeak out a “ah, gomen. Subete bando o mimasu”

So Bella runs to go grab a couple 2-shots while we wait for…

Tokyo Hanayome

They come out in full uniform, and engage the crowd right away.

I’m remembering a couple of these songs and their furi from the last time. Plenty of call and response, and the pattern even changed once. I had to catch myself there, lol

Deigan

Okay, so we do have one more band who isn’t a host club stand in.

They definitely have a raw edge to them. The vocalist, barefoot and covered in dark makeup, spends most of his time screaming while we headbang and jump back and forth for almost the whole set.

So at the end, Bella goes to pick up her cheki and find out where she has to stand for her Rorschach Inc 2shots. Yuuri then bursts out on the floor running for the main hall, and runs back, opening a side compartment door to what looks like a big closet as if escaping to Narnia.

They start sound testing all of the equipment to make sure something didn’t pop, while a staff member puts up a privacy curtain for 2 shots…before taking it down again?

At this point, I really have to take off. Can’t be hanging around too long when I haven’t even bought anything.

Good opportunity to make another buddy with only 3 reports left.

No, no….wait.

There’s been some info that’s come to my attention that could have some implications for my plans.

So, the time has come to make a choice. Do I do what I initially came here to do, or do I lean into the patterns that I’ve learned here?

I think I know the answer.

2 reports left.

Haha, I was thinking this earlier when you listed the non-host club looking bands. “Isn’t Deigan missing from that list?”

I hope I get to see them next year, I’ve been enjoying their releases and the live sounds right up my alley.

Good luck with your last 2 shows!

Shilfee 11/09 @Shimokitazawa Blue Monday

I’m freaking out. Ffffffff, ngjnvfyjbzsfghvdyinvdrt.

Did I lose something important again? Get off at a totally wrong stop? Can’t find the place and it’s 5 minutes to showtime?

No.

In fact, I’m exactly where I need to be, 25 minutes early. I have everything.

Wallet and iD?
Check
Money?
Check
Gift for the artist?
Check
Things I wanted signed?
Check
A marker to sign it with?
Fresh and new, check.
Permission to bring something to sign?
Does a Heart on my Instagram DM count?
Let’s say check.

Then why am I nervous?

Because I’m about to walk into the solo live of (for a long time), my favourite bandman, Tomo Furukawa. Vocalist of Guniw Tools, Nookicky, and many, many side solo projects, his most consistent being under the “Shilfee” umbrella. Shilfee and Tulipcorobockles, Death Shilfee, Shilfee little known, and simply “Shilfee”.

Worried that I’ll forget to ask him for the autographs and photo. Worried that I’ll choke up on my explanation of my cookies being low carb friendly, worried that I’ll somehow test his patience. Even Magu-San, who is going to tomorrow’s show is nervous around Full.

He is kind of known for being easy to irritate.

However, he’s also notoriously nice to his foreigners. In September during his two man live with Nob from Curio he had posted on his website that the cafe in Sapporo would be closed for the weekend as he would be too busy with the shows.

He later posted about how he decided to make an exception, because a fan from Mexico had made it out to the live. “How could I not open up to serve some Chai to someone who travelled all this way?” he said.

I pay at the door, thankful that they’re honouring my reservation in advance.

The nerves calm instantly as soon as I see this though.

Who could possibly feel nervous sitting on this tiny little chair? Watching him perform in this tiny little art house room, with this “Nipper” he called it, up on the wall?

I take my place on the middle chair, second row, records in between my knees. I overhear a conversation in a dialect of Chinese behind me.

The lightbulb flashes and a knock is heard everytime the bathroom door opens.

Time to start…

He heads on…floor. Taking his perch on the stool by his sound equipment, slinging his bass guitar over his shoulder. We start off with a handful of Shilfee tracks, and his voice is still on point after all these years. He stands up and changing a setting on his pedal, and then a familiar melody starts up.

Zujou no ishi! We’re getting some Guniw! A few people singing under their breath, me included. He returns to his stool, and yet another familiar acoustic melody!

“There was no truth as far as I could see…”

Crowd: “Statue. Steel. Steamboat”

Oh, Fade Story takes me back.

He definitely wants us singing along with this one.

After, I’m wondering if he’ll go back to Shilfee, but no, we’ve got Fuyu no Uguisu off Other Goose.

He breaks for an MC, talking about the concert he played in Shanghai years ago. He asks where his Shanghai fans were at, and a Japanese lady in the front row pointed backwards in the direction of the two women who were speaking Mandarin. He was talking about his frustrations with navigating to the hotel and with driving in China.

So we get started on a portion of the set with some grittier songs, after he plays Looping Story Teller, a very not-gritty, whimsical song from The right are each other album.

After a few more, he stops to chat again. He discusses the stage set up and how he wanted to play around with the placement of the speakers and the acoustics.

It’s time for some cover songs! And what better to start off with than Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful (Wonder-Full, get it?) World.

So he starts singing, and he immediately starts up with this (pretty good, I might add) Louis Armstrong impersonation, earning laughter from pretty much everyone there. He switches back to his normal voice after a few lines, but can’t help but add it in randomly throughout the rest of the song.

After a couple of other songs that I can’t quite place (in English), he does start up with one that just about everyone would recognize.

“In the town that I was born, lived a man who sailed to sea and he told us of his life in the land of submarines”

Pretty easy chorus for a crowd like us.

He stopped to chat for a bit after this, I think he was talking about what it would truly mean to live in a yellow submarine, but he said that he really likes living in Sapporo.

He then goes into what sounds like a favourite song of his, “Ghosts” by the band Japan. No, not “X Japan”, but the British new wave band Japan.

He likes the album “Tin Drum” so much that a wall in his cafe is dedicated to recreating the album cover.

After a couple of Japanese songs (honestly can’t tell if they’re covers or Shilfee songs I don’t recognize, I’m hoping for an eventual Setlist drop), he decided to depart from the stage.

Encore claps start right away. We only get two “encore-eh” calls before he heads right back out onto the floor. Full doesn’t want us straining our vocal cords or waiting long, you see. What a thoughtful guy.

So he doesn’t go into a song right away, but decides to tell us a long story about an encounter with a Taiwanese mafia boss. Yes, apparently it had something to do with bootleg t-shirts. But the important thing was that he was wearing an onion on his belt, which was the style at the time.

We get one song after this, which then snowballs into another MC. We get one more song after this, I believe?

But as many topics as I can remember:

  • Talking about DJs and how they work
  • Going over his photography
  • How the concert with Nob went
  • How people can’t appreciate good cooking
  • Victor Entertainment and getting their songs on the radio
  • How they were situated to the VK scene at the time
  • Asaki and him being in a restaurant in Nepal and Asaki getting mad over something (including Full pantomiming Asaki smoking)

Yeah, a lot to go over and drown out if your Japanese is pretty crappy like mine, but he does eventually bid us farewell by 8:50 pm, but he does have to take down his stuff of course.

I wait around a bit until he seems to no longer be running around and has talked to at least four people. None of them have gotten a picture. They seem happy just to give him a present and chat for 2-5 minutes.

I’m willing to step back and let a couple more go first, but I’m situated in a way that I’m the next obvious person from his vantage point, so we make eye contact and it’s now or never.

His hand reaches out for a hi-touch, which yes, is kind of like a high five, but softer and slightly prolonged.

I bid him a Hajimemashite and Douzo Yoroshiku before introducing myself. “Demo, hajimete, douzo” I say as I hand him the low carb cookies. Just a little stumble, but I convey the specifics decently. He thanks me for the snacks and after I ask a quick “mo ii desu ka?”, I pull out my Pinhole and Water Sinker LPs along with marker.

He lets out a slight “Oh?” as if surprised that I would have these. As he’s signing with the date, I let him know that I started listening to his music 23 years ago. He thanks me for coming out and I thank him for the night and autographs. I could have maybe tried to ask for the Setlist or a photo, but given that I was already getting one thing that no one else seemed to be expecting I didn’t want to push my luck.

My resolve strengthened, my trip is in it’s final stages. Tonight I sleep, my bags packed and ready to go tomorrow morning after I’ve finished cleaning my apartment to the hotel where I’ll spend my last night here.

Edited to add: What I did not mention so far is that I actually have signatures from Asaki and Jake for their solo projects back home as well, so this officially makes all three members of Guniw Tools that I have autographs for.

The Final Cut

I know, ominous title. Couldn’t help but get a Coheed and Cambria reference in there.

So my trip is finally coming to a close tomorrow, just one last live report left. Question is, what will it be?

My initial plan? Like, initial plan? Was to see Full on both days, both his solo show and Shilfee little known the next day.

But then…the Kishidan Banpaku lineup dropped.

Golden Bomber…The Gazette…and Gackt with his Yellow Fried Chickenz project.

15,000 yen, but fucking sign me up!

So I sadly gave up on seeing Full both days. I thought it was a done deal.

Until I actually got here. And experienced, and talked, and felt.

I developed bonds with people/bands I didn’t necessarily expect to. I did not go into this thinking that I would become dedicated to anyone in particular.

But then I heard about Zeke Deux’s third anniversary show at Meguro Rockmaykan. A mere 1000¥ ticket, to be in the middle of the room for a show that they’re not even sure they can sell out at that price.

Because I found out a few days ago that they are letting people in for free after all paid ticket holders head in at 5 pm.

So, before this, I figured “Well, I can do both can’t I? I can wait for that lineup…and not tell Kakeru I’m going until I know that I can catch either Gackt or The Gazette! That’s it!”

And turns out, I could hypothetically catch The Gazette….juuuuuust barely….

See, they go on at 3:30, and play for 35 minutes. That leaves me…

Like, no spare time at all to get there in time for the band to go on…

I could leave a little early, and get there a couple of minutes before they go on….or maybe catch an Uber! Shit, no, Uber doesn’t do planned pickups at any of these stations!

I rationalized to myself that I could make it work. I just would be near the back, right?

Until I actually went to Rockmaykan and saw the implications of being way in the back. There’s this lowered ceiling that a third of the audience is behind. You can’t see the band well, and the band pretty much can’t see you.

So…why miss Gackt and even part of The Gazette for a sub par experience with Zeke Deux…if I can even get in once they’ve let people in for free?

Everyone who I asked just said “Look, just go to Kishidan Banpaku. It’s such a big event and when will you get to see Gackt again?”

So I have to make a choice. Do I prioritize seeing and experiencing new things, shiny things, to say that I did? Or do I put my faith in the new bonds I’ve formed, even if part of it is just in my head?

A great lineup, great venue, great merch opportunities, seeing Gackt perform with MiA and Yohio on guitar, Golden Bomber’s crazy shows, which I have yet to have a chance to see, The Gazette, now as a four man band after the tragic passing of Reita. I got a chance to see them in Toronto and to shake their hands, for a set that was twice the length of this one.

I’d be crazy to give this up. And why? Because I keep running into the vocalist of the other band and because I promised him and the other members that I’d be there? That I’d finally take my 2-shot with poor neglected Maya? Because I want to say goodbye to them before I go? Because I’ve been wanting to ask that guy out to chat but justified to myself that even if he wanted to, he’s just so pre-occupied with this show that the timing just didn’t work?

But the reason why seeing Full yesterday strengthened my resolve was that it taught me an important lesson.

Prioritize those that you have a connection with. You never know when your last chance might be.

Gackt doesn’t know who I am. I met the Gazette once, but could any of them pick me out of a lineup? Nope. I don’t even know who most of the Golden Bomber members are.

But the guys in Zeke Deux…they would notice my absence. Would they care? Maybe, maybe not.

But one thing I do know for sure, is that if you ask Kakeru who “Katie” is, he’d know.
And in this isolating society, practically alone except for some acquaintances here and there, that makes the answer obvious.

I don’t care about Gackt. I don’t care about Golden Bomber, and you could say that I don’t even truly care about The Gazette. I care about Kakeru and I want his band to do well.

Enjoy Kishidan Banpaku, Bella!

So with that out of the way,

Zeke Deux Third Anniversary 11/10 @Meguro Rockmaykan

As I walk through the neighborhood that I’ve temporarily called home over the last 10 weeks, I’m struck by how beautiful the weather is. Maybe next time stick to late October to November?

After freshening up in the room, it’s off to Meguro. After taking a couple of pictures of their anniversary bouquets (two, really guys?), I wait around for a few more minutes before the start calling numbers.

A5 today, with SS and S tickets ahead of me. The man who returned my wallet to me comes out to ask people to hug the railing and not block foot traffic.

So I’m actually like, 33rd in the venue. For only 1000 yen, sick! I hop right into centre third row. But people are like…way too spread out. It makes this place look super small. Ten minutes until the show starts, we’re finally told to scootch in more. Even considering that, we’re nowhere close to full. There are four rows of people standing at full attention in tight rows, the rest of the people are just kind of waiting on the periphery.

From info that I could gather after the fact, several bandmen were in the audience, but there were also some non-bandmen male fans as well.

I probably would have been okay if I went to Gazette. Oh well. I made my choice, I stick by it. They call out again for the Saizen to pack closer together. Some spaces fill, some stubbornly don’t.

It’s time for them to start, and we’re slow clapping the members out, starting with Majyu, then Satsuki, followed by Maya and Haruka. The claps increase in speed when it’s time for Kakeru, who comes out on stage, periodically licking his lips while eyeballing the crowd.

Starting off with fan favourite Zero, the first three rows explore into headbanging. That is, except the lady right in front of me. She’s there with an older lady, not sure if that’s an older friend, her mom, aunt, work mentor, whatever. But it’s clear that the older lady is the fan between the two of them. It gets a little awkward maneuvering dives and bows around her because she doesn’t move much but I make do.

For the first half of the set, there are plenty of solo opportunities for each member, the centre section I was a part of spreading out arms for everyone pretty equally. Kakeru takes turns playing around with each member, sometimes extending his microphone to them.

After an emotional performance of Afterimage the lights go down, every member except Kakeru leaving the stage for Kakeru to sing a solo track, L, before he too, leaves the stage.

It’s not encore yet, as the members are back on stage right away for Alive and Fata Morgana.

They continue playing, debuting a new song for the Christmas season, Gift as well as the new single Killing Me Softly until Awake ~From the Darkness~ which is one of their traditional Saizen ramming songs. The two ladies in front of me not knowing what to do at first, I run forward to the barricade, and try turning around when I accidentally get smoked in the mouth by a guy. Nothing hurt, though.

The second time, I learn my lesson to not turn around too quickly and I lean over the barricade this time, taking a couple hits. On the third time, I smile up at Kakeru while taking hits and get a quick nod.

They head off stage for the first time, Haruka tossing his water bottle into the audience. The two ladies in front of me fumble it, and I grab it from right behind me. Encore call starts, and after about five minutes, they head back out in full costume and play three more, before heading off one more time after playing Advance to Glory and Lux en Athena

The second call is immediate. Perhaps I am the loudest out of anyone.
Five more minutes pass, and Haruka and Maya come out in special anniversary shirts that they offered to SS and S ticket holders. They banter for a bit before Majyu and Satsuki join them, followed by Kakeru a minute later, wearing the only multicoloured anniversary shirt. They prompt Satsuki for a speech, followed by Majyu and Maya. Haruka and Kakeru are last, Kakeru having a written statement prepared, which includes a tour announcement with a tour final at Shibuya Club Asia!

They then head into Place, followed by Lucifer, their other known Saizen ramming song. This time, the two ladies know what to do, so they do beat me to the barricade every time, but I do have fun crashing into others.

They finish off with Phantom Pain before saying goodbye for good.

The members, toss their towels into the audience. Kakeru, way in the back, Haruka’s goes to the enthusiastic guy beside me. Maya’s, to a fan on his side near the front. Satsuki throws it just a little farther back on that side. Majyu’s towel is heading right for me…until the fan adjacent to me barrels over and knocks me back, because she wants it. Go ahead, lady.

So lights go up and remaining goods sales take place. Thankfully, I got all my merch and three 2shot tickets already.

I hang back a bit, but eventually names start to get called. I want to make sure I don’t miss anyone, so I head to the front.

Kakeru is up first. I’m still a bit addled, so I forget my smart phone at first. I apologize and grab it for us, and I thank him once again, bidding him a Sayonara, to which he says “no, Mata ne”. “Itsu, shiranai” I respond, but he just smiles and tells me to hurry up coming back.

Haruka, I thank. He has a flash of recognition when he sees me. “Oh, you understand Japanese right?” He says (in Japanese, obviously). “Eee, chotto” I say back. Having his water bottle in hand, I offer him his straw for a drink, he just opts to point to my trophy instead.

Maya is last, probably the most popular man of the night, as he had previously announced that he would be stepping down as a full member after this live meaning that this might be one of the last few opportunities to get one with him at Zeke Deux lives.

“Tsuini!” I say to him, telling him that I’m heading back to Canada tomorrow and that it’s been a long ten weeks. He said that he hopes to visit Canada one day too.

And that’s how this story ends. Not with some magic moment, no once in a lifetime opportunity, but with business as usual. A fitting ending, a realistic ending.

Am I still glad that I picked this?

Yeah…yeah, I am.

It was one of the beefiest setlists from a smaller band that I’ve been to for a while, you can tell they really put a lot of effort into preparing for this one, and literally the only thing missing from a typical Zeke Deux one man/headline set was them trying to lean back into the crowd.

And getting to see the guys one last time in who knows how long was worth it, I think.

I have thoughts about my experience of course, might be open to an AMA from people after tomorow’s final commentary.

But first thing’s fucking first…

Good riddance. I’m sick of making typos

I’ll be the first in with a question for your AMA!

  • What’s the biggest misconception that you think international fans have about visual kei?
  • What was your favorite venue?
  • Anything you would advise anyone willing to make the trip to do/not do/look out for?

  1. Hmmm, tough one. I guess the most important takeaway I have is that, at the end of the day, there really are no absolutes in any given situation.

For example, a misconception that I had going into this was that the Saizen was pretty much always off limits to newbies. Not always true. For larger lives, if you’re there, you’re there. For small Taibans where a band doesn’t have enough fans to fill their Saizen, practically nobody is going to give you a hard time for helping the band out by Saving their Saizen. Sometimes, you get offered Saizen if someone has a great number but only wants to be in front for a band playing later. Sometimes band members pull you into Saizen.

More often, if you’re early enough you may be able to ask for it.

I heard a saying once, “In Japan you quickly learn to read the room” and that applies very much to the VK scene as well. Not all bands do business in the same way.

Ridley mentioned once that there are bands who offer almost total privacy for their two shots, and bands that don’t. They’ll either do them where more than one member can see you, or multiple staff, or even sometimes other fans. Kind of like an “accountabili-buddy”, to make sure nothing PG is happening. Zeke Deux are a band that kind of does it that way. Razor, in contrast, only wants you, him and the cameraman to see.

  1. Hmmm, tough one. Club Phase Takadanobaba is nice, and the Zepp’s are always cool for those little keychains they give you.
I was probably at Ikebukuro Edge the most, but I don’t love how they don’t give bottles of water.

  2. In hindsight, I probably pre bought too many tickets. Unless there is a band that you’re super dedicated to and need to be up close for, it may really not be needed to get tickets for a Taiban show three months in advance when you could just buy it at a conbini when you get here.

If you plan on staying here as long as I did, your preferences will probably change over the course of the trip.

Also, while cheaping out on accommodations will save you money, it’s important to understand how cheap accommodations can work against you. Bedrot is real, lying down for much of the day can definitely negatively impact your health especially if your living quarters are cramped and don’t have great ventilation. So try and get into the habit of leaving the apartment during the day, even if you don’t spend any money and just take an hour long walk during the day. Some lives also feature advance merch sales, so you could leave early for those.

Although, leaving the apartment more often also tends to mean more data usage. So if you have one of those 7 GB/month plans, a pocket wifi will come in handy. Even if you only rent them for ten days at the end of each month.

Closing remarks

So, got to the airport nice and early. They can’t even check my bag, which has probably doubled in weight since I came here. I can get creative with merch valuation in the tax forms.

But reflecting on everything, knowing that I have to leave and reading over my reports in hindsight, let’s address the elephant in the room.

Yeah, the Kakeru stuff makes me look kind of delusional.

Just to clarify, prior to this trip I had seen Zeke Deux twice for Kansai Rock Summit, and had spoken to Kakeru once for a couple minutes (and yeah, the charm was turned on quite a bit). I bought some merch, said hi to the other members manning the merch table.

The first time, the experience that others report of feeling him staring at them (particularly if they’re a white foreigner) was very much the case with me as well.

But I certainly didn’t plan on seeing Zeke Deux more than a couple times when I was planning this. An Instore, yes. Club Junk Box in Nagano was a happy accident.

It was seeing them yet again and getting that feeling that he possibly remembered who I was from the looks he was giving me and the pulling me into Saizen.

I decided to take a picture with Haruka that day instead, just because it was his birthday.

But I decided to get one with Kakeru for the Instore, just to signal that I didn’t forget him. He asked me if I was coming that night, but I had plans to meet up with Panda/Val and I didn’t have any other chance to meet them so I couldn’t. But I reassured him that I would be in Nagano before telling the whole band to enjoy Germany.

So, that then brought me to Nagano. Where the chain of events basically confirmed to me that he is in fact remembering me at this point, and perhaps the other members as well.

When coming up to other band guys who have maybe seen you two or three times, and their eyes blank out for a bit, and you remind them of the last time you came to take a picture and they give you the “ohhh” of fake remembrance.

It was never like that with him.

And then, came the random public appearances. Well, not “random” per se, but more like “we’re aggressively promoting this event and so you should go to important live shows to hand out flyers”, and I happened to be at several of those events. Sometimes a coincidence is just a coincidence.

I always kind of wondered about how useful that flyer canvassing really is. If he stands there, doesn’t speak, and just hands out a flyer, what is the given chance that any one of those people will later attend a show?

It seems like the greater utility is in running into people who have already attended at least one show and using it as a “freebie” conversation chance. I know I saw him talking with at least one other person after Moi Dix Mois.

I mean…it worked on me, didn’t it?

The impulses that I started having to do things like switch my plans or purchase cheki orders came after this point.

Honestly, I wanted to see how it would play out. The experience of starting to develop this weird honmei-fan relationship and documenting my honest thoughts/feelings was more important to me than if something actually happened or not.

And to no one’s surprise, once I started buying personalized cheki and kept getting 2shots, the predictable happened.

The preferential treatment at lives stopped.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not accusing Kakeru of “ignoring” me, because if he was he could have done a much better job of it.

Now, there is one of two explanations for why this occurs, one more charitable than the other, but perhaps some from column A and B

A) Regulars don’t bother themselves with tourists, because they will be gone soon. But the more they see you around, the bigger of a target you become.

This is why sometimes bands will be super friendly to a new foreigner but not as fawning over people who have lived there a while, because continuing to show favouritism can cause fandom drama.

B) Showing favouritism early can be an effective way to hook someone as your dedicated fan, and once they are committed you can safely dial it back to focus on other prospective gya.

Suddenly, you’re not a shiny new foreigner. You’re just another person that’s been hooked. You’ve been “fan-zoned”.

Honestly, if I could have just chatted with him about bandoman game strategy, that would have been its own separate entry.

But yeah, not what I had initially planned. I used to be opposed to member calling, declaring a honmei, etc. Thought I was kind of above it. The typical “oh ha, ha, look at these crazy ladies spending 50,000 yen per show on pictures and Polaroids, buying multiple tickets per event just to be in front of their favourite guy”.

But you know something? There was a wide open gap in row 2 that I could have maneuvered to, just sitting there for the taking. But it would mean standing in front of Haruka instead of Kakeru. And despite my frustration with the lady in front of me who wouldn’t bow or dive so I had to do those moves around her…I didn’t take the spot.

I understand a bit of their struggle now, if that makes any sense. Remember everyone

I hope you enjoyed their oneman show despite that!

Starwave has strict rules against personal connections with fans—no messaging, relationships, or close interactions of any kind. Kiwamu doesn’t allow any intimate engagement at all. Many bangyas can be incredibly jealous, often causing stress for the band and other fans . Unfortunately, quite a few fans, both Japanese and foreign, get wrapped up in fantasy scenarios.

Some fans even ignore me because a member of Zeke seems to give me extra attention :grimacing:

But I don’t think attending their concerts often makes you any less special.

Haha, yeah. I remember Kiwamu’s English Facebook rant about that “He runs off with Hungarian girl, he runs off with French girl, he runs off with Brazilian girl! I fired that shit man!”

I was careful to not say anything suggestive at all via public chat, Twitter/Instagram posts or in person, or to behave flirty but I’m sure he kind of saw through some stuff, in hindsight.
