Modern Classics of VK?

I don’t think I will get many likes for this but Kamikaze by Nogod is such a SUPER banger and imo definitely a modern classic.

Daisuke’s solo album, 漆黒の光, def. fits in this thread, particularly since it had to be turned into a scene collab for the CD release :frowning:

It’s funny you mention D.I.D.'s Paranoid Personality here. I always wondered why they released it as a single in 5 different types, together it would have been a whole album. That would have been less space used in my rack. XD

Damn, how could I forget the song with kyo from that album? I used to listen to it on repeat years ago! Thanks for reminding me of it’s existence

Dir en grey - Dum Spiro Spero

The album is transcendent. It’s not just a “classic of VK”, it’s a classic album in general and one of the few examples where a VK band produced something unique.

The albums I recently listen to that I really like are:
Kagrra- San
Anfiel- lunarphase
DEZERT - Today

MUCC deserves a spot in this thread for being one of the first to popularize nu-metal and heaviness in vk.

I think when it comes to overall importance and impact, then I’d also agree with D’espairsRay’s Coll:Set and MUCC’s 葬ラ謳. Botrh were dark and heavy in a way most VK at that time wasn’t, plus D’espa had their own unique spin of Inustrial Rock (a genre that was getting stale at that time, but D’espa really stood out).

When it comes to Dir en grey albums, I think both Vulgar and The Marrow of a Bone are noteworthy albums and classics for inspiring many bands to go Nu Metal after Vulgar and Metalcore after TMoaB. Vulgar especially kickstarted the career of many Diru copycats (cough Sadie…)

For Gazette… my personal classic of theirs is NIL, because that was the first Gazette album I heard. I know Stacked Rubbish rates higher in the West, but I feel in Japan Disorder and NIL were more impactful and the albums that made them one of the big acts of the 2000s.

Moi dix Mois’ Nocturnal Opera should also be way up there. Not only did it help to keep Mana’s unquestionable cult status alive, but it made a lot of people obsessed with all things Mana, Gothic Lolita and VK. MdM were one of the first VK bands to tour the West and have their albums licensed and sold by overseas-labels. Plus there were a. few Tanbi / Symphonic Metal VK in the early 2000s imitating this project, see Sito Magus for example.

Other albums I think that certainly qualify as classics:

Kagerou’s self titled album (and imo all of their albums, but this one made them big)
Versailles Lyrical Sympathy
Girugamesh’s self-titled album
Sadie’s Master of Romance
deadman’s no alternative and in the direction of sunrise and night light
Rentrer en soi’s Sphire-Croid and self-titled
Ayabie’s Virgin Snow Color
VIDOLL’s V.I.D ~Very Important Doll~

There#s probably more… the 2000s weren’t so bad for VK, especially in the timespan of 2000-2007 we had many good and iconic releases.
