Got any bands where you literally listen to only one single from them, and you want people to know about it? This is the topic for it. In case you don’t know, a one-hit wonder is a musical act that achieves mainstream success with a single hit song, but fails to replicate that success with subsequent releases. The key characteristic is that the single hit overshadows any other work the artist produces.
I’ll start off with one band that I thought was destined for bigger things until they fizzled out.
The ELECTRIGGER single made some waves when it first dropped. People got to hear Zaku’s crazy vocals for the first time. The combination of pop and metal was so jarring it actually worked, and the B-sides weren’t bad either. If the band had managed to follow up with an EP that was just as good, then we may still be talking about them today.
But they didn’t. INITIUM was not very good (to be fair, it wasn’t that bad either) and then Zaku left the band to go form an even worse band in I.T.G.
I remember finding them in like 2021 and thinking “these dudes are a cool, more electronic take on tricot” to myself only to shortly find out this is the only song of their that sounds like this - which was only worsened by the fact they took a nearly 5 year hiaitus just to come back and drop probably the worst mixed, most boring excuse for a “math” rock EP I have ever heard.
A band called DAY-BREAK made to Songs for the Anime Ayashi no Ceres and it seems like this is pretty much all they ever did. I was not able to find any other releases. Which is a shame because both songs are really catchy and I love the singer’s voice.
I don’t even know where I discovered the songs a long, looong time ago as I never saw that Anime.
For me it’s Lost November by Diaura. There’s probably a few more Diaura songs that I do like, but Lost November is the only one that has made it to Diaura songs I willingly search for.
I actually prefer that 90’s homage band they briefly formed together back in like 2018? I’ll link that song here as I guess that counts as one hit wonder also if you count them as a separate entity? They only had one single available to everyone, then they released something else and it was live limited?
Not visual kei but this song (Wild Rock) is literally the only thing I’ve ever heard from BUZZLIP and that’s because it was the anime opening for Saiyuki Reload.
I love them , but I’m say, Purple Stone. Poison Chocolate was,is, and still my jam but that’s all their songs I like.
One band, who had a long ass Japanese name, had a song about “sorry to annoy you” which I liked due to the drums sounding like someone knocking on the door and the lead singer in the pv would be knocking on everything during this point.
also, zigzag. Love them as entertainers but Neko is the only song I like
