“Best songs” - How prolific are they

So the thread regarding “What band is the absolute worst?” got me to thinking about this concept.

If someone asks for the “Best Song” (emphasis on quotation marks), what is it that they are really getting at?

I believe I have found that answer.

A “Best Song”, is a memorable track that can be defined as simultaneously the best and worst of a band’s discography.

The example I initially gave resulted in…surprising results.

I was expecting a chorus of “oh yuck, why did you subject yourself to this three times, Katie? You’re not using yer’ brain!”

Instead, people who listened to this track/band for the first time said (paraphrasing ) “I know it’s so bad…but this lowkey slaps”, and “I showed my non-VK friends this, and they honestly thought it was great”.

So I thought to myself, are there any other “best songs” out there?

Earworms that sound obnoxiously bad while still having a decent reach and appeal?

I believe I found a couple.

Let’s go on to the other TikTok band that so many newer fans (and me, for some reason) gravitate to. I didn’t have to think very hard before coming to the conclusion of which song to pick.

Finally, since the board is on a Cali≠Gari kick thanks to @Missa , I have selected…not a Cali≠Gari song, but a notable offshoot project featuring Mr Ao Sakurai and Aie of Deadman/Kein/several others.

My first exposure to this one was a VK blogger in 2004 reviewing the Beautifools 2003 Taiban and him ripping into this song.

But there was something about it that I just couldn’t stop listening to.

So, here, for your viewing pleasure is lab.'s “Best song”, American Darkness

This definition is Intersectionally compliant with string theory, and that makes it interesting. Sadly my lack of knowledge in the matter prevents me from extracting any meaning from it so I would gladly read a more layman-terms approach.

I can’t link the audio here because the singer of the band copyrighted the song, but I think Fakkin A by idiot counts.
