not sure what to think about the 4 fingers red hands…but 5 fingers black hand…

By the way…we are less than 1 month away from the release…anyone is really expecting something from them? I feel like the last album I enjoyed from them was M-OLOGY (which I remember many didnt like) and its already almost 10 years…

Also uh, that’s pretty fucking weird

now that’s what i call shock value ..

Lets wait for an statement about “we didnt know what this means…foreign fans overthink, no issues for Japanese fans” and we can start the cycle again :joy:

honestly i personally think that it’s used more as a ( clumsy ) form of denunciation than anything else. And MERRY are usually known for doing so in a lot of their concepts and songs. Must be suicidal or absolutely dense to use it in a " positive " or " aesthetics " way.
So i don’t think they did it in a offensive way, but the whole thing would have been the same without this part of the cover in particular knowing how sensible the subject is. basically they’re searching for it.

Things that do not surprise me: This. Quoting myself from another thread.

(That picture is in bad taste, I don’t deny that, only that it’s not surprising to me)

Remember that Japanese people have zero thoughts about the stuff what you might be “meaning”, absolutely zero - and they have no bad intentions whatsoever. This might be the most common culture shock for foreigners trying to get into and understand the real Japanese culture. If you explained what you feel is strange to them with this picture they would be like “eh… so what?” and if you would ask for a longer answer it would sound like something like this “Still so what? Aren’t you starting to get rude to me? What you are talking about has nothing to do with us and we didn’t make it to insult anyone. If you get insulted its your problem.”.
In Japan there is no woke, no feminism etc… same with China, South Korea, and the countries below, Thailand, malaysia etc - but thats another thread.

They already faced a massive backlash a few years ago though for blackfacing in their promo picture haha

This is not about “woke”.

That being said, MERRY used to be very “woke”. They have their roots in punk culture and are very critical towards the government (at least used to be). They’re a political band, so I think holding them to a “stupid vk band” standard does not really do them just.

Maybe “≠” is a song about racism, we’ll see. Who knows. But putting this on a cover as a “circus” reference is an odd choice.

I am not familiar with what you sent but I doubt they used to be woke sincet that is a western phenomenon that mainly started from the 2000s, and became huge in 2015. As well as feminism. (I am not saying anything is bad or wrong)
There is no feminism in Japan. I don’t know what to say but I can give an example. In the convenience stores that basically are everywhere in Japan, roughly 56,000 stores all over the island, from top to bottom - finally removed porn magazines that used to be next to children’s manga - after complaints from foreigners. The “cover” they used to have is a joke (you can see in the picture), its like they didn’t even try. The porn magazines also used to look quite wild and there were always a few hardcore fetish ones.

Millions of kids got introduced to sex and sexuality this way, just by looking at what was at display there, at least once or 2-3 times per week. Of course you know how kids are the slightly bigger kids/teenagers went there only to look at the covers, faking that they were checking out the manga.
If foreigners didn’t complain they would still be there today, because it was completely normal and accepted by adult japanese men and women.

What I want to say is that the “real Japan” is very different, and it all connects to what you pointed out on the cover. And no this is no bashing on Japan, I love Japan I will spend the rest of my life and die here. I love Japan, it is just VERY different. Maybe a bit too different what a “modern” western person could tolerate, but it is like this and will never change whatever you do. This is the Japan accepted by again, adult Japanese men and women.
Well.. I, will check out what you sent!

This is like a cyclical debate here…we cant just give a free card because for them because it has no meaning/they are no woke/feminism (I dont see the relation here). When a western celebrity does the slant eyes gesture, nobody is like “oh there is not offensive there, they mean no harm, etc.”.
There may be no feminism or woke in those countries, but there is the same thin skin when it comes to “stereotypes” in both sides…

Just lest hope there is some “meaning” behind the pic and its not just empty image/a racist AI :joy:

I don’t really know how to reply to this. Yes, Japan lags behind in many ways when it comes to equality. No, it’s not some static entity that will never change, there are people driving the change and there has been plenty of change. You also seem to have very, um, unique concepts about what feminism is (not to mention the woke boogieman).

I doubt this’ll change your mind, but my original home country is generally considered amongst the most egalitarian on earth, very progressive, socialist, all that stuff. I was talking to my mum on the phone the other week and she noted how funny it is that the convenience store equivalents there have no mags other than the porn ones left, in full display.

I’m more concerned with the fact that I can’t tell if this cover is AI slop or not than why they decided to put a black slave in a cage. Though both things are a little… uh, odd.

At the very least, I will remark that it’s interesting.

I’m assuming ‘Caramel Collar’s’ lyrics will answer all your questions.

Yeah, the picture is distasteful on its own but I’m reserving judgment until I see lyrics and some context. As usual, I strongly doubt they’ll be endorsing slavery or something, if anything the opposite. The real actual victorian era / early 20th century circuses had some really racist things going on, and that’s what the aesthetic seems to be based on.

Yeah, that actually quite wrong what you are saying haha

“Woke” is just a term politcally right extremists use to discredit others. Anti racism, respect and discretion have always existed.

Feminism too. Maybe not where you are from, but it’s not a thing that has been existing since 2015.

What I was saying is: MERRY have always had political lyrics and have punk influences (which is what you call “woke” too and has always been). That’s why it’s an odd choice without context.

And there is feminism in Japan too, otherwise women would still not be allowed to work, would not be allowed to marry freely and would not be able to vote
Porn is not anti feminist per se.

But it’s all off topic and mods will delete our posts, so you can look that up yourself, I guess. If you can’t, feel free to DM me.

Yup, exactly what I’m thinking. It’s just weird without context and using it in a “circus” context. The artwork is definitely meant to be “historic”.

I would really like the white woman/ black slave in a cage thing to be a reference to The Torture Garden. But most probably stupid AI slop with a lazy prompt like: ‘A circus tent with images of humans being on display, in a Dali like surreal style’
