蛾と蝶 (GA TO CHOU) - アゲハ (Ageha)

It’s on YouTube so we can all listen along, even if it doesn’t officially drop for a few more days.

I’m not sure what to make of GA TO CHOU. I look at the members and I think the line up is awesome. An ex-Lycaon member, two ex-R指定 members, and an ex-Kiryu member should in theory be absolute fire. This single doesn’t turn me off but it doesn’t inspire confidence in me either.

アゲハ is not catchy to me. Like, at all. The melody comes and goes like the wind. Not sure what the plan was with making this the single, since I think it’s the weakest song here. Maybe it will grow on me in time.

The loud-kei slut within me would have preferred ザクロ as the lead single. Feels like an R指定 track in disguise. I remember this one a little better. 雨宿りis the CHOU-type exclusive song, and it’s an alright ballad. I think it would have hit harder if アゲハ didn’t feel like half a ballad.

I won’t write them off yet, but I want to hear something a little more convincing. There’s something here. It needs more time to develop.

What do you think?

I haven’t listened to any other song besides アゲハ yet, but I really like that one tbh
I think it’s a nice, laid-back kind of song, nothing too fast, loud or complex. Personally I enjoy having some variety in the music I listen to, I don’t always feel like listening to the same stuff anyways

Insanely boring release to me. They seem to play as safe as possible — which is expected in case it’s a cash-grab project. You got fanbases from rshitei, kiryu and lycaon to attract, and if you want to make money you can’t afford to piss them off, so you make everything as generic as possible.

I am not saying it’s a bad release — the songs are fine, they just lack any substance to make them memorable.

considering how mediocre also the first release of Ashmaze went, I would give them at least one more release a chance.
I myself currently am still not sure how to think about this release, it is good but nothing I am much invested into.

IMO the ballad is probably the least interesting song in there. I like the rest, especially the MV song, that one is stuck in my head. I also just like Souma’s voice. Too early to judge the band, but for me, it’s promising.

Surprised at how faithfully they’ve recreated the sounds of late Lycaon and R-shitei for these tracks, they’ve even snuck in vocal cues that are incredibly reminiscent of Yuuki’s and Mamo’s. What’s also apparent is that the instrumentation outside of the standard five-piece rock ensemble will be immediately familiar to fans of Lycaon and R-shitei as the clapping circus crowds and strings, smattering of piano with a ticking clock and a meowing cat is brought over from those bands 1:1 also to be used exactly in the same spots to exactly the same effect. I’m kind of alright with this actually as, I suppose, one of the few people here to crave for more material from those two bands. The shortcomings however aren’t unique to this band but to contemporary vk at large. The musical bedrock of the two heavier tracks is the played out, spectacularly mid nu-metal to watered-down metalcore riffing that is unfortunately what’s going to place this in the guilty pleasure category for me until they’ll find an as of yet unexplored middle ground somewhere between what Zero and Kaede are bringing to the table and Souma grows into these songs and blossoms into his own as a star. The boys are cute and I’m able to live with that, but I’m holding out hope for something more. I’ll stay posted.
