Any cool overseas VK/VK inspired bands? ( ̄▽ ̄)╭

Hello!

These days I’ve been somewhat interested in exploring obscure overseas bands that called themselves Visual Kei bands or took heavy inspiration from them.

From bands, who took inspiration from Visual Kei, i know Cinema Bizarre,

and from actual overseas Visual Kei bands i only know DNR (Dreams now reality), SEREMEDY and DISREIGN, so im looking for other cool non-japanese V-Kei bands, preferably from Europe, but everything is okay (/▽\)

I’m sort of a vk-inspired musician

maybe you’ve heard of them already, but imho Lilith was the single greatest vkei band outside Japan. actually, this PV opens up sounding kinda mid ngl, but stick with it until the chorus and you’ll see why when this came out i thought they might have been campaigning to become China’s Kagrra,

maybe in another universe they didn’t disband right after this PV, dove deeper into taking vkei into New China Style, and built a second national hub for vkei in Shanghai as an example of how artists could build vkei in their own culture rather than simply pantomiming Japan’s. Their first album 圓夢中華 is an extremely solid listen, a bit mid by 2010s vkei standards (ofc i love mid vkei) but right in the middle, tracks 5-9, you can hear them beginning to engineer the specifically Chinese direction. Also ngl i especially respect them platforming the guzheng and ehru performers directly in the PVs both times! Side note, look on vk.gy, the vocalist and guitarist have new bands, and the bassist and drummer also do support work.

you mention Europe - my favourite vkei imitating band from that continent is Die May from Finland. the music they made with their first vocalist Seike doesn’t appeal to my aesthetic and preferences. But starting w/ their switch to Tsuomasu as vocalist, they’ve massively leveled up in competence and focus. A lot of times i think bands get called “Gazette Inspired” to mean “usual and not outstanding in a particular way” but i think Die May put far more study into what specifically The GazettE does and how, and put out an album that sounds at least genuinely competent in the style. HOWEVER, Tsuomasu sings and has lyrics in Japanese, which imho holds the project back. I’d love to hear how they could adapt Finnish language & cultural understandings into their music; i thought that could bring them from participants to innovators and leaders for their continent. But as it stands they still have an album out that i think would pass as a competent Japanese band in all areas save lyrics!

returning to e Asia, i forgot them until rn bc to me they feel less like a foreign band and more like an integrated part of the scene lol, but if somehow you’ve not heard of them, Madmans Esprit is a Korean band (band? solo project? it’s band now right?) mixing black metal with vkei. If you’re into black metal you’ll certainly like this; if not it may or may not be approachable to a general vkei audience. But i almost don’t want to devote too much explanation to them lol bc they’re clearly succeeding, competent from day / album 1, and are touring w/ ex-Mejibray Tsuzuku rn iirc. I think vocalist Kyuho’s just launched official support for a kouhai band; very excited to see if they can develop the scene’s presence in Korea beyond themselves.

i have to give a tiny quick shoutout to Zetsu from Vietnam - instagram.com/zetsuvn_official/ - who afaik is yet to really begin band activities, but i’ve been following the guitarist for some years and as they seem to be ramping up production i’m eager to see where they’ll go.

Finally, for the US, i would encourage you (and everyone reading this!) to check out https://www.vk-ny.com/ and look into each artist listed. This was a taiban from a weeksago as i write this post, so all artists are ofc currently active and working. Of everyone i’m most familiar with Casey’s work, whose most recent album A Whisper of Spring is an incredibly faithful study of Malice Mizer’s Merveilles era thru a filter of US soft rock & shoegaze. It’s received direct endorsement from Kamijo, so once again i’m very excited to follow developments here. Tho this post is exposing my own ignorance and reminding me i’ve got to check up on the discogs of everyone listed!

oh yeah and i do music so obligatory plug for me i guess

Recently found another Visual Kei band from China. I especially are fond of the makeup of the drummer. (They are on all streaming sites beside Apple Music)

I really like Marsara’s most recent work, Iorubá - I’m Just a Brazilian Visual Rocker, they are super talented:

There’s some dope LUNA SEA, ROUAGE and other late 90’s references on their sound, they were even featured on that recent World VK Guide, worth checking them out!

Eat my Teeth are polish Deathrock and Goth band. I know their singer is a big fan of VK and I can def hear some oldschool VK and Kote kei influences in their music, especially in the singing

I’m Zephyr from N.T.T. FXXKS. Aaron is the vocalist. We’re heavily influenced by bands like Ween, cali≠gari, Have A Nice Life, Plastic Tree, Chat Pile, and sukekiyo.

I used to date the bassist of “Aural Coma” (Switzerland) and since we broke up in good terms, i have no problem dropping their name in here  honestly the vocals are not my cup of tea, but instrumentally, i think they are not too bad…maybe some of you guys want to check them out
