I am curious on how big the male audiences are for the usual semi sucessful Visual Kei group are like in percent
would I expect it to be moreso 5% or 20%
depending on how much data I get to this I might actually would do a graph and a database about it.
I ideally prefer to talk about groups of under genres like menhera kei or loud kei as something like kira kira kei groups very obviously sell themselves for a mostly women audience.
20% seems way too high. Last year when I went to some smaller lives there were like 1 or 2 guys.
When I went to Kansai Rock summit I took my dad because he traveled with me. When we saw Zeke Deux he said it feels strange to be the only guy. To which I replyed “you are not the only guy. Look there is one more.”
And I wouldn’t really count my dad here because he was just there because I wanted to show him what I like.
For the other concerts or taibans I didn’t count but the small bands really didn’t had much male fans.
It probably depends a lot. On my recent trip I saw way more male fans in the audience than I was expecting, for both Kamijo and the Damned, MME, Neth Priere Cain 3man I went to. Well, Kamijo is not such a surprise I guess, I think he has always had a larger than average amount of men in his audience. Versailles even used to do men-only lives.
That said, the men really did not make up a significant percentage for any of the lives I went to. Definitely closer to 5% than 20%.
Depends on the show, the band, etc. I was in some crowds that were literally 100% female, but that was typically smaller, younger bands.
In terms of popular bands, Luna Sea, Buck-Tick and surprisingly, Shazna was about 50/50, Dir en Grey, Pierrot, MUCC, etc a bit more weighted towards women but not insignificant male presence.
Popular bands that had the fewest men in the crowd, as far as I can remember were Plastic Tree and Dezert.
This is more of an overseas fan perspective based on the lives ive gone to in the U.S.
I’ve seen ACME 2x, Jiluka 2x, Last Rockstars, Fukuro and Hyde(not vkei but fans overlap). Im a guy btw lol.
ACME had small crowds but it was atleast 80%ish women both times. Jiluka despite being metalcore was 70% to 30% female to male ratio although at their second solo show id raise that number to 75%. Last Rockstars older crowd but around 60% women to 40% men. Fukuro 90% women to the point i felt i was intruding. Hyde was also 70% women.
Overall seems to be a majority of women at shows irregardless, of the music. Band-Maid opened for TLRS which probably added to more guys showing up. Makes sense because the aesthetics of the genre leans towards a female audience as male metalheads tend to be elitist about the music lol. Although as a male fan who buys merch, wears the vkei makeup and tries to dress up at shows, i feel so awkward and out of place being one of the only guys whose really into it. Hopefully i can meet more male fans at lives in the future.
Obvs i can only speak about bands i’ve been to but off the top of my head:
lynch - maybe about 40% men on a good day
Deadman/kein - also around 30-40% men
Dexcore - definitely majority men. 60-70%?
Dezert - 20% depending on the kind of live
Kizu - 25% but also depends on the kind of live
Mucc - 30-40% i think but i need more data points to be sure
Hyde solo - 15-25%?
L’Arc - 30%? But this depends on section (expensive seating skews more female)
Luna sea - 40%? But expensive seats skew more female
Kuroyume - this was also discussed in the kuroyume thread, but 70%, probably
Kiyoharu solo - 50/50, but need more data points to be sure
SID - 15%
Zombie - 10%
Small bands that i’ve only seen once so unreliable data:
Chaqla - maybe 1 or 2 guys in a crowd of 80?
Umbrella - same as above
Mama - same as above
Zeke deux - 0 men in a crowd of 30
I don’t see much of a sense because as long as not collecting data from the people itself you can’t know.
If I attended shows people who see me would sort me into one of the two binary genders. But I’m non-binary so that would lead to a wrong result.
(And please, don’t start the topic of sex and gender as two different things, this always results in eugenics and reducing people to whether they are capable to reproduce or not. I’m just saying that because there’s nothing to discuss about. If you hadn’t that in mind, it’s fine.)
I understand the curiosity, I just really wonder about how useful it really can be as long as the people attending don’t get asked themselves. Especially when it comes to graphs and databases.
What I am seeing here is that women carry the underground scene and men show up once a band has established itself
my intent at no point was to reduce nonbinary and genderfluid to a binary system. You are definitely right with that those numbers don’t hold much verified information.
But that what I wanted to see was just simply, other peoples opinions on how much men are active in the live scene, so that I could grow a sense of how it might feel to go into a Livehouse as well. Like can I expect that for bandomen making two shots with male fans also be second nature, or would they actually struggle to really pose adequate (in their eyes) for other men because how rare they are in the scene .etc.
That’s of course totally fine to get a bit more of a feeling of what to expect.
Asking for that reason doesn’t change anything about wrong impressions but is something different than the thought of a database, you know what I mean?
For yourself, I can totally understand.
I think that is not a new phenomenon. Look at the Beatles. Beatlemania started because they were extremly popular with woman/teenage girls. And sadly music is often looked down upon when the audience is mostly (young and) female but as soon as men discover an act it becomes acclaimed art.
It’s also possible that the farther back you go in the scene, the less gender segregated the fanbase was (whether that’s due to less host-boy fuckery, or being promoted in magazines and tv shows that appealed to a more general audience in the 90s).
Aside from concerts, it seems that the amount of males in this forum is quite high - but maybe boys/men tend to be more active in general in discussion boards and things like that? As this is the first forum I’m active I don’t have a lot experience in this
the idea with the database mainly was, for that I had something to offer for this thread as well, because I both don’t want to just leave the conversation after starting it, but also replying to every reply from someone also feels spammy. And I can’t provide any estimated stats myself to the conversation.
it was not like the end goal of things
(also right now thinking about it, I don’t really know how to design the graph in a way which would be useful for the original question)
Could just be my anecdotal experience but i didn’t feel treated any different for being a guy when i went to some instores a few years back! I didn’t do a cheki two-shot but did the “sit in a chair for ten seconds while staff snaps a picture of you and the band” bit.
I don’t think the poses got adjusted for me either, i think both bands were fully in second nature mode, and if they thought much of it, they didn’t let me know.
It’d be too cringe to repeat now, but when i was younger i think it was really nice to be treated what felt like the same as any other average gya in the scene, when i popped in and out as i did.
The two times I’ve met bands, they didn’t treat me any different and were just happy to meet fans. Fukuro was really chill and engaging despite the language barrier.
On the opposite side, i went to a vkei event in my city and I felt so out of place as one of the only guys there.
There definitely seems to be a larger female audience. I’m genderqueer so I dont really count anywhere here (◞‸◟;)
