Not gonna lie, even watching the trailer was kinda uncomfortable…
I think this show was worth preserving. But I don’t know what will be of buck-tick going foward. They are recording a new album right now, and i don’t know what to expect
it’s for their Japanese fans, not us, anyway. something-something different culture, etc
I wonder if they have invited someone to fill in the vocal part though, that recent issay tribute album had two vocalists out of what I imagine is roughly BT generation who sound very very close to Sakurai and probably would be a good fit
I think it’s completely fine for one-off occasions like this. They’re doing it again at the end of this year, so it most likely will remain at that, it’s not like they’re gonna tour like they used to imo. In theory I like the sentiment, it’s just kinda painful to watch personally.
I’m curious what the new music will be like. During the last album’s promo cycle they did a lengthy video interview where they mentioned that they originally planned a double album, so my guess is a bunch of songs had probably been ready in some shape or form for a good while now, they’re just adding some more ‘meat’ onto them… but we’ll see.
I’d rather they went for a similar approach that several Japanese acts (although not necessarily rock but still) did in the past, m-flo for example:
Make a whole new mainline project and call it “Buck-Tick meets x” or “Buck-Tick loves x”, and replace “x” with any guest vocalist (e.g. Sheena Ringo) that they keep rotating every now and then, and once a good bunch of singles with such features gets wrapped up, they could make a “Buck-Tick album” consisting of “Buck-Tick meets x” songs, all of which could help preserving the imprint that Atsushi left in BT’s repertoire - and also in Japanese music in overall.
I know most of you would not really like the idea but it’d help the remaining members to discover themselves again (a big +1 if they had guest vocalists representing different genres and not necessarily the same kind of music BT was accustomed to)
They’d have to get pretty exploitative about it to make me stop supporting their decisions. They were a band for such a long time, and I have enough faith that the rest of the members will continue on in a spirit that’ll fittingly honor Sakurai. I like the idea of rotating vocalists, and they’re one of the few bands in the scene with the longevity and respect that this idea could work/be sustainable. Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but if the rest of the band can find a way to carry on with grace in a way that’s satisfying to them, I don’t see why they should stop.
All that said, I’m unsure how good anything they release might be. It’s not like I’m excited, especially with how much emotional baggage will come with it. I love Buck-Tick, and it’ll never be the same without Sakurai; but if it feels right for the rest of the band - and they can make something they’re proud of - I think they should do it.
To commemorate the release, a special “3DAYS SUMMER NIGHT LIVE STREAMING” event will be held on the band’s official Youtube channel on 2024/08/10, 11, 12 (8PM JST each day). Just like on previous occasions, they will be streaming already released live footage from the band’s vast catalogue. No Youtube archive as per usual, so be sure to catch it live~
I have been contemplating on whether to get this or not. It feels special but at the same time I am not sure if I would ever be able to watch it. Certainly never comfortably.
As for the vocals, I have absolutely no issues with handling the memorial concert this way. AFAIK they do not plan to continue like this though, Imai floated a bunch of possibilities in the recent interview from him and/or Hide singing some songs, focusing more on instrumental music to guest vocalists or even AI (pls no). We will see what they land on but at least for now it does not seem likely they would get another full-time vocalist.
The best way is guest vocalists and they sharing vocals. Everything else is a bad idea, the old footage+pre recorded Atsushi vocals works for the memorial, but I can’t see this working moving fowards
