Something about this band is interesting to me. I personally don’t have a lot of songs just the basic hits but still a solid band. Between multiple line-up changes and several vocalists who tried to make things work. I found it interesting that that it took 2 vocalists to land on one that just has such a beautiful angelic voice. AI in my opinion was the best pick out of the three but it would have interesting if Hazuki stuck around. The formation of this band was rather rough. Deathgaze formed in 2003. Vocalist wise they started off with Hazuki from Lynch on vocals with their release “294036224052”. This was his former band. He ends up leaving the band after this single was released to form lynch. Afterwards a vocalist named Sou joined and they end up releasing the famous “CHAOS” single and also their album “genocide and mass murder”. After this album, the vocalist leaves and AI who was originally on bass switches to be vocalist. He ends up taking on the role in such a positive light that he ends up staying in the band for most of of their life span until they disband in 2014. I’m not sure exactly the reason why they disbanded but AI goes solo and eventually forms Darrell which he is now active in. A lot of their discography is basically some fast paced metal, and melodic stuff. It’s a unique dynamic the way deathgaze as a whole does this. It’s very angelic but at the same time brutal. This band can make a brutal/angry track sound nice and beautiful in mere seconds. Their mastering is also interesting I found them to purposely use a filter over their guitars during some releases to grab a specific sound. Overall they have good stuff. Ah man, deathgaze is a trip for me. When I first started discovering them, I was asking, “Is the vocalist just the guy from Lynch.? Or is it someone trying to emulate his singing style.”
Only later to find out, its both hahaha

I am a fan of their more melodic stuff. They hit that sweet spot for me where the poppy choruses and heavy verses blend well.

I don’t recall exactly where I read it, but I remember at time of disbandment there was a statement from Ai saying something like, “I’ve done all I can as Deathgaze.” Which hinted at creative stagnation. And I can feel that. But they released the song “The Underworld” right before that, and it’s still one of one my favorite tracks. So I think they could have kept going.

Thanks for making this thread. It’s inspired me to go back through their discography.

I agree with your stance on that they should have continued. Darrell is basically deathgaze 2.0 so it’s a weird situation I guess. Underworld was a masterpiece.

Been listening to these guys a lot recently, love Ai’s voice so much. Can second Amends being a fantastic track, great song to end an album with.

I highly recommend checking out their albums AWAKE -evoke the urge- and CREATURE as well as their best-of compilation DECADE.

As for Darrell, I agree that they are pretty much a DEATHGAZE clone, in fact disc 2 of their single BRILLIANT DEATH is just full of DEATHGAZE covers.

My wife always said Ai sounds like an Ox moo’ing. And we’re both okay with that.

DEATHGAZE was always one of my favorites. As said before in this thread, they hit the melodic notes and heavy metal just right, in only a way a VK/Nagoya-Kei band could.

I seriously love every “phase” of this band. I quite like all of the vocalists they’ve had! But I agree that Ai is really something special.
