That’s true. It’s my preferred version and maybe even my most favorite song (it competes with 朧ノ月).
Karyu keeps posting pictures from their mid 2000s Europe tours
So nostalgic and makes me hope for a reunion. I could see a one day revival (in Japan), but a Europe tour would be pretty rough for Hizumi, I assume.
I have to agree. Although I suppose part of it is that I was lucky enough to be a teenage vkei fan when they were actively touring in Europe so there is a healthy dose of nostalgia there too. But honestly nothing quite hits like D’espairsRay and I miss them so much.
Coll:Set might still be my all time favourite album, though I feel like making such rankings is a bit redundant nowadays. It is just such perfection from beginning to end and even the songs that are not my favourites feel necessary to the overall balance of the album.
Oh if there ever is a reunion concert I will move heaven and earth to be there. I doubt it though, my understanding is that Hizumi is no longer able to sing Despa songs. But one can dream ![]()
I discovered them one year ago in a channel that remasters VK vídeos, i mistaken them with Defspiral (funny how the members of both works together) due to the sound of the names being a bit similar in my language, and they both have a song named Hollow. After going looking foward to listen more of them, i found Death Point, Falling, Human Clad Monsters and Yami ni furu Kiseki, then i got my definitive favorite band from all time. Every single day i listen to them and god damn, i can’t get tired of it, Garnet still sounds fresh even after thousands of plays. If my dream of they do a revival comes to reality, i really wish they record Ao, it’s has so much potential to be one of their best songs. My top 10 would be:
Paradox 5
Garnet
Tainted World
Trickster
Kisei ~Parasite~
Tatoeba Kimi Ga Shinda ra
Subliminal
Genshoku
Falling
Reddish
Can someone confirm if it’s true that they were forbidden to play Facism in Germany? Saw it in a YouTube comment, I don’t doubt, but i just wanted to see if is real.
And anyone knows if there’s anywhere in the internet the record of Tsukasa singing it on their 10th anniversary? I really can’t imagine him singing this specific song.
Probably not true since they played it at least once in 2004 according to setlist.fm
The song is also on the european press of the Liquidize tour DVD. Germany has something similar to the PG rating called FSK. This DVD is FSK 14.
Maybe one venue or festival asked them to not play it because of the title. But there was surely no overall ban. Some symbols of the Nazi’s are forbidden to show in Germany (but they are allowed to be used in movies and documentains and the like) but there is no “word ban”.
Songs with very extrem lyrics can be put on the so called “index” which means it is not allowed to advertise them. It is however still possible to buy them.
Since the lyrics do not glorify the NS regime, there is no reason for it to be anyhow problematic in Germany.
Ahh more D’espairsRay fans, welcome ![]()

Glad to see appreciation for their later releases too, I have seen too many comments on how they went wrong after going major lately. Paradox 5 and Garnet are some of my absolute favourites too. As is Hollow incidentally but that is more out of emotional attachment than anything ![]()
I really can’t understand the hate on everything after Coll:Set. I get isn’t that the dark sounding from their early days, but is still quite unique and immersive.
I’m the only who thinks that Hollow doesn’t feel like a despa song? Kinda strange feeling, everytime i hear. I remember seeing that even Zero said that it’s too different for him.
Me neither. I love all their work and Monsters has a special place in my heart.
Do you like Hizumi’s current band NUL.? I think the sound borrows a lot from Despa.
No I definitely agree that it’s an odd one out. I think that is likely why I have so many memories attached to it in particular. Because I have listened to Despa for a long time in many different situations but Hollow will always take me straight back to the summer of 2007 ![]()
I absolutely agree. I feel like this might be coming more from people who like dark gothic rock in general and that’s what attracted them to Despa’s early music. The people who love D’espairsRay in particular enjoy the core elements that are unique to them and imo stayed more or less consistent throughout their career.
I still haven’t checked out everything by them (shame on me) but so far I have liked everything I have heard. They definitely remind me of Despa and I don’t think it’s just Hizumi’s voice. So far I kinda feel like NUL lacks a certain kind of… edge that Despa had. It sounds to me a bit like someone put Despa in one of those stone spinning things that makes them all smooth
It might be because Hizumi can’t quite sing the way he did in Despa anymore. Not to say this quality is necessarily a bad thing, like I said I have enjoyed everything I have heard so far and definitely intend to check out all the rest too.
Nul. Is great. As someone pointed earlier, it’s kinda funny how it’s more closer to despa vibes than Karyu’s recent compositions. Another Face it’s the best example for me, surely has the old Despa dark vibes from Garnet single, and Jill has Mirror album feel too.
But has anyone there ever saw the time Tsukasa singed Fascism in their 10th anniversary? We have access to him singing Brilliant but not this one. Either it wasn’t recorded or became lost media.
We, we have? ![]()
Yeah. Surprising that you haven’t saw it yet XD
I really really can imagine him singing a aggressive song like Fascism.
Pay attention on how Hizumi is all quiet on the bass, while Zero is like he is having the best moment of his life with guitar.
Small fun fact, i’m currently working on cosplaying Hizumi look from Spiral Staircase tour, that one with the fur jacket.
I have looked but somehow never managed to find it, thank you so much! ![]()
I love the tiny bits on enka flavour he throws in there ![]()
Oooh that is such a cool look, it will always hold special memories too ![]()
I’ve managed to find the songs of L’eveil first demo tape, the band of Hizumi and Tsukasa before forming Despa. Don’t ask me how.
Beautiful song, btw
Listen to monsters
Crazy find!
I was talking to @zeus earlier about this.
Imagine [coll;set] done in surround sound it would be crazy cool to hear. ![]()
I can only be so erect.
