DIR EN GREY announces EUROPE TOUR24 FROM DEPRESSION TO ________ [mode of Withering to death. & UROBOROS]

Please please please same in Berlin  faves!

I understand that WtD and ROO should be the focus of this tour

But god damn, I’m more hyped for the chance of witnessing TDFF and Eddie live!

Any attendees here with us?
Can someone elaborate if THE FINAL was the old or the new version, and what exactly was used as the ending SE?

Someone wrote this on reddit about the VIP meet and greet lol

“Each member hands out a signed postcard (without saying a word) Kyo was wearing something like a paper bag so I couldn’t see his expression.”

then wasnt worth paid a lot for that lul

It’s never worth spending money if you want to meet Kyo. You’ll have much better luck hanging out in a McDonald’s near the venue.

First time since 2012 they played it, too!

Thanks, it sounds like shit!

that’s a different song

But arent they basically the same?

I would never ever have dared to dream of seeing Akuro no Oka live one day. Curious if they play Yurameki and/or Zan at the Uroboros show.
A little bit sad that they didn’t play Kodoku
But maybe it will rotate into the setlist on the next dates. I’m so excited for the concerts!

Sorry for the longass post. A concert report from last night by yours truly,

After some late changes-of-mind and fluctuating living circumstances, I opted to swap out my Berlin tickets for hometown tickets in Warsaw.

Although I wasn’t sure about it at first –– the Polish crowds for Dir en grey are notoriously timid –– the idea of saving a few hundred Euros in what would’ve gone for inorbidably priced drinks and lodging turned the tide in Warsaw’s favour.

As I started to make my way to the venue, I noticed a few more alternative faces about town than usual. A Dir en grey concert makes its presence known in the frequency of neon-colored hair and piercings that multiply accordingly with one’s proximity to the venue.

Progresja’s grey, informal exterior resembles a warehouse, and it’s connected to an equally dreary communist-era office block by a turqoise annex. I’m not sure what the offices are for these days, and with Warsaw’s creeping getrification and the center’s expansion deeper into Wola’s previously wasteland-like urban spaces, I wouldn’t count on this venue being around for much longer.

The line isn’t massive at around 18.00 –– the unpredictable Polish spring treated us to a snowstorm just the other day, and understandably many didn’t feel like gambling whether they’d be soaked or freeze to death. The early attendance and VIP were separated into two other lines, while the general attendance snaked around the parking lot. A quick survey of the crowd reveals an equal measure of alternative types, normies with splashes of color to remind them of their weeb days and averagely dressed males –– and quite a few foreigners running the gamut of all three. The age demographic of the attendees ran from early 20s up to the late 30s.

Once out of the cold, I immediately head towards the bar, and this was my tally from stepping into the venue and the lights turning off for the introduction:
Two pilsners
Two or three shots of vodka, I forgot.

As I found out, Progresja’s practically a dry county that day, and it wasn’t just that it was a Tuesday, but Progresja’s bar counter has received some adjustments from the last time I was a round, and a shot of Ostoya ran for 18 fucking zloty with the beer not far behind. These prices aren’t far behind those in Berlin –– so you’re best adviced to drink outside before the show. Beggars couldn’t be choosers that day, and I won’t go into a concert sober, so I did what I had to do –– pay.

The band gets on stage with an interestingly mismatched attires, which is just about the norm. Each of the members has quite a distinct personality, and there’ll be surprises in the outfits, if you get to see them on YouTube. Naturally Kyo’s shaved hair and gold chains stole for me from the jump, but Toshiya’s glitter top wasn’t far behind.

And speaking of which, my god, these guys look young and in shape for being almost in their 50s –– Toshiya especially could’ve passed for a bandman in this 20s. Kyo’s face has some miles on it, but his stage presence is otherworldly, and just by looking at him these days, it doesn’t feel that you’re looking at Kyo but one of the characters he’s specifically made for the theme they have at any particular time.

This is Dir en grey in the mode we’ve seen in the Mode of tour DVDs. The performances are much crisper than when they were touring these albums initially, and the vibe is that they’re simultaneously calling back to those times while taking everything they’ve learned along the way.

And for me, there was an element of the surreal in getting all these bangers back-to-back, and I felt like I’d eaten too much; any one of these songs would’ve blown the roof off the places years ago, and now they’re all one after the other without much fanfare,

and that feeling of disconnect leads to my biggest initial fear that turned out to be exactly what happened: the Polish audience is so bad. They’re timid, incredibly passive and lose enthuasiasm quickly. It took them almost the whole concert to warm up, and the break between the initial set and the encore was just as embarrassing as it was last time, where almost complete silence engulfed the venue. It’s not that people aren’t stoked to see the band –– they’re just shy. Things finally picked up for the encore when, finally, I saw a pit erupt in the front, and I pushed my way through to fuck shit up. The pit seemed to be appreciated by the band, and I recall some interaction between Kyo and the people in the pit, including a pretty broad smile for the first time in the gig and some hand signals. Naturally I offer my gratitude here to everyone who made that happen, and although I ran out of gas as a 30-year old chainsmoking alcoholic, everyone else made up for it.

As everyone has seen by now, besides the songs from Withering to Death, we got a couple of other songs. Domestic Fucker Family might’ve been the biggest surprise, and I noticed that in the pit, it seemed like people weren’t exactly sure about what song it was. I eavesdropped some conversation, and it seemed that quite a large part of the audience wasn’t hardcore by any stretch of the imagination. For the boys and girls in the pit, the band bust out Phalaris’ Eddie, which I believe was significantly extended from the album runtime – maybe even doubling in length? Or I was just so gassed that I felt like an eternity to try to keep up with it.

Oboro was played in its live rendition, which involves this freak-out screaming section towards the end. The Final’s original version was also much appreciated and infinitely better than the remake –– the stupid solo interrupts the momentum, especially for the crowd.

Kodoku from WtD was skipped entirely, and this makes me worry about what songs they’ll skip today from Uroboros. Akuro no oka came out for the end, and I assume Yurameki and Zan will be cycled in an out throughout the tour. It’s nice that they’re putting in this element of mystery and incensitive to go see all the shows.

Ok that’s it for now. Basically tl;dr: band good, drink expensive, polish crowd bad, pit boys and girls legends, and setlist interesting. I’ll come back with Wednesday’s report tomorrow.

I also got Toshiya’s pic and it says “Dir en gacy” lol

Kyo also likes Warsaw

this is a complete nonsense, I was there and it’s just straight up lie lmao. Just because Polish deg audience does not have interest in literal drunken fighting and punching each other, as I saw some abroad fans do when they come here, doesn’t mean they are a bad crowd.

there was no such song, must have been a different show sweetheart

Awww, but I LOVE Die’s solo in the remake!!

There it is, the obligatory Poland crowd bad.

I disagree wholeheartedly with that comment. The crowd yesterday was great, all people around me were clearly very hyped to be there and we had a blast singing on top of our lungs and head banging like crazy. I seriously fail to see how the lack of a moshpit is immediately categorized as “timid audience”. I also don’t think these guys come in with the expectations to see it, considering they come from a place where everyone in the audience has an assigned spot and is expected to stick to it.

The gig yesterday was great, except for some minor sound mixing issues in the beginning that seemed to be fixed about two songs in, and I’m looking forward to tonight’s one.

blud was vibing more with alcohol than the band and the crowd clearly

it’s a bit mental when people come to a different country/different culture with a set of expectations and they complain when people fail to meet them tbh.
