DIR EN GREY announces new album MORTAL DOWNER & tour

When do you guys think we can expect the second single for the album?
I feel they need a real banger because the devil in me was so mediocre. Not bad but nothing special. For Phalararis they had ochita sora which imo is a terrible song, but also Orobo which is fantastic.

I don’t know about the single but I think we will get the album late spring/early summer. In time for their tokyo garden shows which will 100% be a blu-ray release

In my opinion, TDIM is quite a good single. It has familiar melodic phrases and musical ideas that have been part of their sound since the DSS era, but there’s also a certain sense of freshness to it.

man, that title is so fitting for how I’ve been feeling about them for the past two years lol

But I’m staying delusional, I mean hopeful…maybe they’ll go for a sludgy sound

I really don’t understand why people hate on this song so much. I think its great and has some really interesting stuff going on as well as just having a pretty dark vibe in general.

Agreed. Also I have a soft spot for well crafted tracks in that C# key.

I also believe had the PV not used AI, the fandom would view this song differently.

compared to what they have done until now its very generic

I really don’t think it’s generic. It’s a messy and underbaked song, but it’s not generic

Ehh I think @Baroque ā€˜s critique still stands. Compared to the band’s own discography, TDIM is down there with The World of Mercy for me in terms of boredom and lack of creativity. It sounds like a Phalaris jam session that they cleaned up into a demo and released as a full single anyways. The song sounds like dir en grey sonically, but is compositionally lacking. It’s their weakest song to date (for me).

Like probably everyone else here I have heard the bands entire discography and we’re gonna have to agree to disagree. Haha. I think the thing thats throwing people is the fact its not really intense, but Im guessing it also isnt meant to be. Its got a weirdly relaxing, but dark vibe and personally, I like it. Haha. As much as I love death and black metal I can also enjoy ambient and classical stuff so not everything has to ā€œslapā€ for me to be able to enjoy it. Haha.

How does anyone actually feel enough about The Devil In Me to try fighting people over it? It’s like the tepid median of everything Diru has done. I would like them to release something more restrained, I think being ā€œmehā€ on the song isn’t because people want nothing but br00tal.

They have worse songs but I literally can’t imagine caring or feeling any strong emotion as a result of it.

Agreed, except for the part about TWOM being bad.

TDIM is generic for latter-day DEG. It’s a kind of amorphous blob of a song that could’ve been on either of the last two albums. I don’t hate it, but it feels weak and it’s certainly a disappointing beginning to this era. Also consider that it took them two years to write this one song. Was it worth the wait? I don’t think so.

The b-sides also suck, as have all of their recent (note-perfect yet devoid of any vitality or creativity) GAUZE remakes. 19990120 was equally pointless (except for the bonus DVD, holy shit lol). While the sentiment is appreciated, none of these remakes were worth the time to record.

Mmm it’s not that. Even if I was critiquing TDIM by intensity, they’ve written plenty of songs that are not crazy intense and I’ve usually enjoyed them. ā€œDisabled complexes", ā€œoboro", hell ā€œtaiyou no aoā€.

I’m also of the mind that the remakes have been lackluster and feel pointless. They were great at first because they reworked the entire structure to fit their current style and created something new. I used to look forward to them because you didn’t know what to expect (even if I didn’t like all of them….looking at obscure remake).

Lately it’s been more about re-recording them with modern production. They have nothing to do with what they’re currently exploring musically and so feel jarringly out of place.

I read everything you all wrote… but currently ā€œthe new DEGā€ till feels generic to me, but if course if say ā€œthe devil in meā€ came from a different band, it wouldn’t feel generic. **

This is a big problem with the latest songs written/released by DeG. There is no real creativity left. They are their own enemy themselves. Some obviously think ā€œThe Devil in meā€ is a good song but its just copy&paste parts and rehash of previous material. I know most bands that have been famous or a long time end up here, its nothing unique for them.
I rememeber when song like ā€œjesus christ rocknrockā€ and ā€œrinkakuā€ came out. Oh good times.

Them now starting with AI music videos as well shows how much they actually care about their music writing/production as a whole. Its things like this that ā€œrealā€ music critics talk about and I don’t say I am one… but you get me, maybe.

I would say the ā€œnew degā€ started with TIW. That they even would put ā€œningen wo kaburuā€ as a title track single is embarrassing. Again here some might like it, that its ā€œcatchyā€, but its a terrible production. They weren’t able to mix it correctly, or rather that whole album wasn’t mixed professionally. Such a thin sound, like what was the point of Toshiya’s bass lines? In most songs at least.
I can’t sit here and write an essay but the problems continue with Shraudenfaude, such a bloated overlong song just trying to copy Vinushka. If there is one really well written song on the album that stands out its ā€œ13ā€ and the only one I would recommend to people, and the radio friendly Oboro is also a good songs that dares to do something a DeG ballad hasn’t done since Arche… uuuuh

@Baroque hold up, you did read that I’m agreeing with you right?

I think it’s safe to say that creatively, DEG reached their peak with ā€˜Dum Spiro Spero,’ and everything since then has been them spinning their wheels, while trying to pump in new ideas, with mixed results. The (healthy) ā€œdivideā€ amongst us and probably the rest of the fandom shows that. It reminds me of what happened with GazettE post DIM, Lynch post signing with King Records, etc. The beauty of that is that even post their ā€œpeak,ā€ these bands have produced some great bodies of work. Sure, there are some callbacks or rehashes, but they’re done in ways that I think provide an ā€œupdatedā€ feel to their sound.

Also seeing these tracks live in person has given me a deeper appreciation for these bands recent journeys too.

Its why I can rock with a TDIM, overtime grow an appreciation for MOST of Phalaris, the entirety of TIW, TWOM, and etc. And its why I don’t go into most albums with a certain expectation either. Whatever we get with downer, as long as i can add some new tracks to the rotation, I’m good. It’s unrealistic to hold them and other bands their age to a standard they prob won’t reach again.

The pre-chorus (ā€œkaketa nawa ni waā€) and the chorus itself are enough to make me like The Devil In Me. The garbly rap verses Ć  la Sustain the Untruth is what keeps me from loving it. DEG hasn’t put out a truly great single in quite some time, with true gems being found on the full albums.

But what I want them to do is stop trying to force songs to be 8+ minutes, which is what it feels like they’ve been doing since… Diabolos. At the very least stop shoehorning in double time sections, because then it just sounds like they’re trying to recreate Vinushka over and over again. Sometimes it works (Schadenfreude), other times it ruins the atmosphere (Zetsuentai).

Honestly, Kaoru should be embarrassed if he’s listened to Houmonsha X or Giji Necromancer. Take some cues, bro!

Diru peak was Dum Spiro Spero and Gaze is DIM? Both are my most hated albums :joy:

Maybe they really were The Devil In Me.
