Yeah this is def a live album. The studio version of 蜿蜒 isn’t my cup of tea but it hits harder live. And DEMAND? Once Toshiya and or Die start joining in on gang vocals, this is gonna be perfect.
Not bad for the “first” showing of the new tracks.
The album grow a bit on me. I can now put on repeat more tracks like Hizumi to Ame (this bass <3) . Tops : Bloodline, Hizumi to Ame, MOBS, TDIM, Void, Demand.
Still struggle to like it as a whole.
And to follow the trend my actual probably unpopular list:
I started with them with UROBOROS that’s explain why i have less affect with older ones but they are not bad. But, even after many years still can’t get into DSS.
(full albums only and judging as a whole even if there is bangers in low tiers)
Many rate phalaris low. At least an album like phalaris has highs like the oboru climax chorus followed by the amazing violins, the perfume of sins black metal chorus, the catchiness of 13. Etc. Mortal downer got zero of those moments. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, of course not, it’s not just a very radio friendly album so to speak, or what you would play to try to get friends into deg.
For me personally though I wish it had one good catchy chorus at least, or. A memorable moment. Was only one really too much to ask for.. ![]()
at this point I just like they’re still together and release new songs (no new style or new sound though, but fine). to pinpoint moment of mortal downer, actually they do have some, like Void at the end, heavy part, just too short, as always dir en grey. phalaris, for me, pretty much the naturalisation of clean and distortion from arche, at least arche both guitarists still more rich in a lot of songs. Mortal downer just new, but kisabi is outstanding, in a sense, no more rapping-scream, back to high and growl scream.
They took the creativity and energy they usually put into hooks and instead threw it into a blender so they could spread it throughout the album. It’s interesting and slightly unconventional; there’s not a lot of ABAC style songwriting here but a lot of momentum driving through the songs and taking a few unexpected twists and turns here and there. Though I’d argue rather than unexpected moments, it’s the songs or sounds themselves that are unexpected.
That said, I agree with others who have said the sequence of the album is a little bit off.
I haven’t taken a stab at it myself yet, but has anyone tinkered with the track order to make it flow a little better?
Thinking of giving it the same ARCHE treatment that most people here have been considering at the time when ARCHE was out? Meaning the track order, ofc ![]()
A similar exercise for sure. Unlike Arche, Mortal Dingo feels like less of a grab bag so I wouldn’t necessarily cut any tracks especially since the concept is pretty tight.
So, first of all, album rating
Second of all, going through all songs separately took off this moody mood and helped to enjoy other songs as well.
Still not sure about Mougoku and Kusabi tho, so either i would put them in different spots or just would exclude them from the album. Dunno
Child prey is what got me into them permanently but I understand why people don’t like it
Not for me. Kaijin ni Kisu is the most Tool thing on the album. I don’t get Deftones at all.
I have logged in for the first time in years to say…. Void is pretty good
Today, I have listened to the album for the second time since its release.
Holds up well.
I keep thinking about the part near the end of Demand where Kyo sounds like he’s having a mental breakdown. might be my favorite bit on the album. sometimes I am a simple creature
Demand might be the one that impresses me the most, and early contender for favorite. Rather heavy and heavy. I’d say it’s the mental breakdown accompanied by the brickwalled Hoenn trumpets that really set it over the top.
There’s also a very 17th century quality to the guitar melody that I find oh so interesting.
That V-i cadence, baybeeee. It goes hard.
Sounds like there’s a lot of guitar parts like that throughout the album. The guitars really shine when they’re not overly saturated to shit.
I’m eager to give my opinion, but I don’t feel like I’ve fully grasped the album yet.
As many of you here have said, " the album will surely grow in me“ (I find that expression amusing.)
I think I’m close. Then I’ll give my opinion and album ranking. Spoiler alert: UROBOROS won’t be in my top 5.
