lmao, yeah just noticed the unique tokens on each . worth a shot
Not really known as a DeG fan, but I really like Yokan and the preview is nice. Looking forward to hearing the full track.

Okay. I didn’t notice there were samples when posting the link lmao.
Like others, I’m surprised at how Kyo sounds in Yokan.
lol so devil in me sounded so beautiful in the teaser and it already morphed into sustain the untruth/blossoming beelzebussy crossover.
I rly should be wary of everything the diru thread™ is hyped about!!!
These samples are less than a quarter of the songs people, chill.
It’s an anniversary thing. Their major debut was 25 years ago.
I’d rather have these remakes than some of the atrocious remixes they put as B-sides some years ago.
We can’t comment on the mix from these samples. I’m sure these are compressed to shit, as the original teaser for Devil didn’t sound this muffled. I want to find Shinya and shake him by his shoulders though. How did he listen back to that and think that snare sound was good? It’s so awkward with the remakes. Like he’s pounding the shit out of a loaded suitcase.
DEG hasn’t had an original b-side since… Fukai? They were never really ones for that to begin with. Before they started doing the self-covers all we were getting were terrible live recordings.
they’ve done, like, three or four original b-sides across 30+ singles
it’s just not their style I guess
If you discount all songs that ended up on albums, remade or not, the only unique B-side they ever made was Toriko.
And G.D.S., but that’s more of an SE, right. Literally every other B-side they ever released ended up on an album or got remade at some point:
Unknown…Despair…a Lost → Unknown.Despair.Lost
children → children
Fukai → Fukai
even before those, but especially from then on, it was only remakes (or remixes).
I thought they already did that? And got enough attention for it…
You never get enough attention for a debut anniversary lol
I wouldn’t say that b-sides getting remakes takes away from their status as unique b-sides. But, at the same time, the band never treated them as obscurities anyway. They were more or less songs that didn’t end up on albums for whatever reason
This discussion again?
I could care less about them filling up their B-sides with remakes. I don’t like any of the alternatives. Even as far back as their visual kei days, their B-sides weren’t all that great.
I legit think the only B-side from the Gauze era that I like is Zan D.P.Y mix. And Unknown…Despair…a lost from the JEALOUS single. And even though I don’t really listen to it, Toriko from -I’ll-. The remixes started when they partnered up with YOSHIKI.
Most of the remixes from the MACABRE-era ended up on KAI, which we know is canonically everyone’s favorite album. No questions asked. Pretty sad we never got a complete cut of “children” from the Taiyou no Ao single, but whatever. Can’t be helped now. I mention that track because I think it’s the third time we get an original track as a B-side outta these guys (Ash/JEALOUS are re-recordings).
There aren’t many B-sides of note from the Kisou era, since most of them ended up on the album proper. Shout out to the FILTH remix, that one’s pretty interesting.
Then we step into the VULGAR era, which is where we start getting a mix of everything. We still have some remixes like JESSICA and Keloid Milk x Mr. NEWSMAN. One new track in Fukai (that makes four so far), which is such a banger, and live tracks on Child Prey. The other remixes are okay, not aggressively obnoxious like the GAUZE era remixes, but I never find myself reaching for any of them.
Somewhere around the Withering to death. era we start really getting those live recordings as B-sides. Those were dark days. That’s something actually worth complaining about. Quality of those lives went from barely passable to straight up bad, depending on how good Kyo was that day. I don’t think we got a single original B-side between The Final and Dozing Green. G.D.S. straddles the line, because itself it’s an “original song” but it’s an SE they used to use at lives and then it changes into Shokubeni and that’s not really a new song. But it’s worth pointing out!
Dozing Green is where they start experimenting with re-recording older songs, starting with HYDRA -666-. But I don’t really consider these new songs in the vein of children or Fukai. At around this point their pattern becomes “one reinterpreted song, one live recording” and they haven’t really broken stride with that until 19990120 and this latest single, which focus heavily on re-recordings. Occasionally we get a remix. Note that I’m focusing only on singles; they do have some more remixes like DSS Disc 2, but I’m not as familiar with those due to trauma from earlier days.
So why did I go through all of that? Because in their almost 25 year history as a band, they’ve given us four (and a half?) original B-sides as songs. Four. What are we nostalgic about?
And I hate to say it but they’re at least putting in effort. Dir en grey could take a page out of the GazettE’s book. The GazettE used to do Optical and Auditory Impressions of every single release up until FADELESS, when they switched over to dropping one track a week or two before the album. No B-sides at all, and GazettE B-sides used to be legit, yet they get a tenth of the heat that Dir en grey gets for what’s a substantially lesser amount of music from them.
But I digress…Dir en grey’s B-sides have always been more miss than hit. There’s nothing to be nostalgic about because a period of time when they had consistently good B-sides just does not exist. I’m welcome to be proven wrong but I know I’m not.
Exactly. I thought there was some alternate timeline where DEG was churning out b-sides like Gazette or MUCC.
The B-Side in me
kagerou, the other free-will big-hitter, had an exactly same release pattern for majority of their run (they had a total of like one? interesting b-side worth attention that never had an album re-release) and on top of that they ended up releasing an absolutely horrid final album before breaking up for good. more or less same with rentrer en soi in the freewill era.
it just looks like FW doesn’t force their artists to chug out a double album amount of work throughout each album’s era, but I’m not sure I’m really fond of this approach or not. even with deg, the time spacing between each release is never indicative of the said release’s quality, especially considering that at least some songs from their recent several albums feel like they were penned ages ago, and dug up and updated or mashed with other songs altogether before being retaken in studio for the final CD production.
If they like to keep things in the Dir en Vault, and have the liberty to use them however they want later, I won’t complain. I like when albuns are like 75-80% new material, and diru albuns are never cluttered with things I already heard
It might be just because I’ve been messing with Suno so much lately, but the vocals in Yokan almost sound like AI.
I keep going back to the devil in me sample and then Gang vocals at 0:20 sound fucking TOUGH.
Also I have no problem saying the following:
Id def take a live recording and a heavier remake (like ZAN or TDFF) than the remakes of these soft ass joints. They sound egregiously lifeless. Idk if it’s my music nerd side coming out but you can tell when an artist/band puts their foot in the craftsmanship. I don’t feel it here and that’s why I thought that last single minus Zan was dogshit. These Gauze era remakes sound like it was a chore to record.
Hell, I wouldn’t even be mad if we JUST got Devil in Me as the single.
I still haven’t decided if I want to go all in on the crank GAUZE (2024) theory yet, but by next wednesday we’ll have new remakes of all the singles so I’m going to take quick inventory of the rest of GAUZE because we’re almost(?) there.
Not counting mode of adam and mode of eve, 63.63636364% of the album has been remade already. But if you’re impatient you could throw in some remixes and you could make the most cursed Dir en grey mixtape.
Also surely there’s a new version of mode of adam in a DVD menu somewhere, right?
