DIR EN GREY - The Devil In Me

Get Jens Bogren to do an album. I think the only thing he’s done is the Hageshisa single and the TIW bonus tracks. I like his sound.

Woah, this is so much better than I expected from the previews.

My package delayed because I wasn’t home when the delivery person came… I was only gone for like, 30 minutes. :expressionless:

The song is out?!!

In parts of the world where it’s the 24th, yeah.

Yes please!! i think that his production would be great for their current style / songwritting, his work on hageshisa to (single) and those bonus tracks is remarkable

So in general after reading a bit, people seem to be blown away by the main track? But then I saw someone complaining about Kyo’s goblin voices?

Is this one of their stronger singles?

Finally got my hands on the Main track. Diggin it a lot.

Its simple, but groovy in a metal way, but also haunting as fuck. I’m very curious to see if all the boys wrote this one. This sounds like something that came about via a jam session. Cept unlike STU, there was a genuine effort behind it.

That chorus hits harder with rest of the track. Die and Kaoru need to get locked up for that combo. I gotta hit the stank face whenever it comes on. Damn.

I can see this song hittin more during Halloween season. And I can’t wait to see this performed live…I feel just like OBORO, Kyo is gonna go crazy.

I’m not gonna bother with the remakes. This a 10.
I don’t count that bullshit they dropped a couple months ago as a proper single…

With that said…

Since NINGEN DEG been droppin BANGER single after BANGER single.

I may be ready for them to redeem PHLARIS with a new album if this what they comin with.

i’m literally never interested in remakes / rerecordings but somehow these Gauze II tracks are all perfection to me… not better than the original, or something i’d listen to in their place - but they have their own worth, which is something i almost never say for any remakes i’ve heard from other bands.

there’s something incredible about hearing the acoustics from 予感 drawn out with the fullness and mastery of acoustic instruments they’ve learned. On Gauze, which is a perfect 10/10 album, the acoustics are still straightforward, just strumming the parts on acoustic guitars as intended, and it fits the songs fine and memorably.

But in these remakes - idk how to describe it in specific ~music theory~ or technique terms, but the things which made Ouroboros and on sonically richer and harmonically deeper, those things show up on these old songs that were originally written to be so simple.

I love ‘modern’ (ouro and on) Diru for their complexity and early Diru for their honesty and sentimentality - these remakes offer me both! i need a full Gauze II in my life :o

I don’t know how I feel about these region locked releases. I wish it dropped worldwide all at once

giving this single more spins now that it is on stream. One thing I’m picking up it’s the vibe the remakes have an very peculiar freshness. While diru stuff is usually moody and gloomy, this batch remakes in particular are very light.

Cage and specially yokan sound very fun, full of joy. It’s like they are out of character, and allowing themselves to just have fun playing with those silly old tunes. They don’t sound bored to me, they sound like they are chilling. Easy songs, easy remake, good vibes

Finished listening on YouTube since I’m still waiting on my physical.
The single is interesting and unique. That much I can say. It doesn’t feel like one I’ll be running back to hear over and over on repeat, but I respect that they want to do something unusual. The whole track has this ungulating quality that gives it a unique sound.

The remakes are interesting too, but I didn’t really feel anything special listening to them. Unlike the single from January, which I still gravitate to multiple times a week. I don’t feel that these reinvented the songs in any particular way.

All in all, it’s a mixed bag for me. TDIM definitely feels like the album version will mix in an extra solo or bridge, because right now it feels lacking somewhere. Funny enough, I really liked Ochita, Ningen, and Utafumi. All songs people compared this one to.

Title track is awesome, loving it more with each relisten. Only bit I’m not totally sure on is the first 30 seconds or so where the vocals sound kind of off to me, but beyond that it’s great with lots of stuff to unpack. I imagine it’d be really fun in a live context as well.

The alternate recordings of Cage and Yokan are generally what you’d expect following the last single. I tend to like the way that their remakes these days are just the same song being recorded/produced in line with their current soundfont, rather than total reimaginings like their older remakes were. It makes them feel less like attempts to outright replace the original tracks with something different and more just like offering multiple flavours of the same song.

Someone uploaded it to yt. Is it only me or does the song lack any real punch/hook?

it sounds like a lie buried with vengeance/fatal believer/deeper vileness (original) mashed up together, and it brings up flashbacks of that short era between 2010/2015 when it was The Thing for some alt bands to release singles with no real chorus in the structure

it does feel like a refresh for their leading single formula, though, so I hope whatever will be on the next album will have a similar element of surprise all over.

I’ve listened to it in my car and thru headphones at this point.

I like The Devil In Me; gives me similar creepy vibes that I get from Shokubeni. The chorus is the star here, as the Kyopera vocals and the pipe organ work really well together. Love Shinya’s cymbal work, especially on the ride during the chorus. There are some sections that feel like they were stitched together without a proper transition, almost like this is still an edit of some sort but I know it more than likely won’t change later. Ending feels a little hollow. Clearly by design, but it feels like it’s missing one little thing. Still a dope single though. Those minor quibbles don’t ruin my enjoyment at all.

I don’t like the Cage rerecording. Drums are too loud and dry and clumsy. Toshiya’s bass sounds like he and his rig are wrapped in a potato sack. Honestly the rhythm section is the most fun part of Cage and it’s totally butchered here.

Yokan fares better somehow. I’m glad they removed the spoken word section from the original. I hated the way they lowered the volume of the music and made it sound like Kyo was all up in your grill. Here it’s just completely gone, and I say “good.”

EDIT: regarding the composition of TDIM, I would extend the intro another two bars. I feel like Kyo comes in too soon. I would have also liked the second chorus to repeat with a slight variation the second time around. This is mostly bias because I love the chorus so much and I don’t get to hear it enough. But yeah, that’s me being armchair producer.

They are not premiering the pv today, meh

Didnt they always use to do it the day of release?

if they’re reshooting AI parts that would be cool because otherwise literally. lmao. forever.

i wonder if they still send PVs to music channels, too

we will get an version with an stamp occupying one third of the screen, and missing half of the song

Wasn’t huge on the title track the first listen, but it’s really grown on me after a few spins. Not the best song they’ve ever done, but it’s quite solid.

The remakes are alright; not sure if I’d choose them over the originals, though.
