DIR EN GREY to release new single "朧" ("Oboro") in Spring 2021

I’m more interested in the fact that Kyo plays Fortnite lol

Actually… no.

Everyone has different ‘parts’ to their voice. These are called ‘vocal registers’. Most people have three of these (chest, middle, and head). Between these registers are gaps called ‘passaggio’. You can hear this commonly when a man hits puberty and has a lower range, a falsetto (actually above ‘head voice’), and a massive gap in-between. Passaggii can be overcome with training but can move to different places as one gets older, so training must begin anew.

So, when Kyo says some parts of JEALOUS are too high for him, that’s because he’s over 20 years older than he was when he wrote it and his voice has changed. He can still hit the ‘Kyopera’ notes because that’s a totally different part of his register. Many long-performing bands have to drop keys so the range is comfortable for the vocalist.

It may very well be that he’s fucked up his vocals to some extent through smoking. He’s also displayed poor screaming technique in the past which lead to him being hospitalised with vocal nodules. And let’s not forget that he’s been unable to perform live for a year because of COVID and may possibly be a little out of practice (side-note, Shinya once said he never practices because they’re on tour so much… no idea about Kyo).

Anyway, there’s no need to shit on him for this. Everyone’s voice changes over time. It’s part of the natural process of ageing.

I get that his ability to perform some of the “showstopper” vocal parts is hard to maintain with age, and I wouldn’t criticize a vocalist for that.

My feeling is his choice of delivery in a few sections of remade tracks are only there to set themselves apart from the originals. Take Kasumi for example. Sounds pretty much 1:1 with the original until the bridge when you hear what people call “kyopera” through the duration. Maybe it’s me but I’d have liked to hear the guitar phrase/solo part undisturbed by non-lyric vocals that really do not fit.

Oh sure, I get what you were saying now. There was no reason whatsoever for them to remake Kasumi when the original was already perfect. The extra parts add nothing; it’s all quite redundant. THE IIID EMPIRE remake you also mentioned is much worse. I have no idea why he shifts key in that one section.

The only songs that could really use a remake are the very early ones. An album with a rerecorded MISSA, I’ll, Toriko, and JEALOUS could potentially be awesome. Aoi Tsuki in particular could be pretty sick. I’d also like to hear a version of Kiri to Mayu that’s a bit more melodic (I don’t really get the 2012 version).

Judging by their track record, they’ll probably ooga-booga most of those songs on MISSA. I +1 this sentiment though.

Kiri to Mayu 2012 is the most fun remake they’ve done. Pretty much everything from the original is there. Kyo is the one that makes it sound chaotic and unrecognizable except for that one melodic part he pulls from the Missa version.

That THE IIID EMPIRE section is so pointless since Kyo still sang that part as usual during 2018 lives.

That’s a weirdly cute cover art for Dir, isn’t it? Not even blood running out of her eyes or anything.

“The artworks for this single has been created in collaboration with the “paper doll” artist Maki Hino. The artist, who aims to make “works shaped as human beings”, was inspired by the title track 「朧 (Oboro)」 for these dolls, resulting in a very unique and memorable artwork.”

No Jealous? :frowning:

Nope. Too much valuable for casual plebs to see it.

As for the live footage to be included in the Limited Deluxe Version, it will bring you the latest live clips by the band: 13 songs from “Concert Film Screening『目黒鹿鳴館GIG (Meguro Rock-May-Kan GIG)』” in an exclusive re-edited version along with a unreleased clip for 「羅刹国 (RASETSUKOKU)」, for a total of 14 songs!

Huh. That’s… somewhat intriguing.

But having Keigaku no Yoku both on CD1 and CD2 feels lazy.

If T.D.F.F doesn’t have some doomy sludge sections to it, I will be very disappointed.

Also, this cover art just screams “JESSICA” for some reason. First thing I thought of when I saw it. They look okay, but not like your typical Dir en grey art. But maybe this isn’t your typical Diru song…

Well, it wasn’t made by your typical Diru artist, maybe that’s why.

Also, if they gonna have doomy sludge sections - only just for the intro, pls. So then they can speed up drastically.

I was thinking interspersed throughout the song actually, just like the original. Original had some sections where it slows down and approaches what could be considered doom metal if it were heavier and sludgier, and then it speeds up back to the regular tempo. I think if they push that to 11, and really play up the slow, heavy, and fast parts, that it could be amazing. Orrrrrrrrrr…they could just make a completely new song, throw in a couple of “foocha foocha”, and call it a remake. With this band you never know.

Oh.
My bad. Forgot about that section (which reminded me of Devote My Life with that two-note “melody”).
Then yeah, I can dig that. Just… let’s not have another Tsumi to Kisei.

I wouldn’t expect a completely new song, since they’ve stopped doing them since 2013? Nowadays their remakes aren’t THAT different.

R.I.P. :skull:

At least we get CHILD PREY…

Wouldn’t be so bad if it were a different recording, but it looks like it’s the exact same one. Lame.
Who the fuck makes these decisions? In that spot, we could have had Aka, Keibetsu to Hajimari, Byou「」Shin, umbrella, JEALOUS, or Schwein no Isu!

This time the one with the CD/DVD is the version to get. I wanna see those performances!

Totally. I shit on THE INSULATED WORLD a ton but the songs themselves really shine in a live setting.
