DIR EN GREY

And the best part of Zetsuentai wasn’t repeated. I really love the melody in the first verse but the rest is so forgettable. Especially this hard part is so disappointing.

I’ve always had the same impression. I can’t imagine a boost in the lows and a reduction of high frequencies doing anything good to that album — it sounds super chunky and quite bottom-heavy as is. Makes me wonder what hardware people use to listen to music

I gave that modified version of album a spin (perfectly for TIW’s 3rd anniversary), and I started to notice big differences from Downfall. And it’s the 2nd disc that sounded very diffferent. I’ll try to listen to both versions simultaneously and write some comparison notes.

I wish they’d work wirh Jens Bogren for an entire album. I really don’t have an issue with TiW, but the bonus tracks for that album were such a stark contrast.

I was sick of Madsen as soon as I heard what he did to Hageshisa. Best thing he did was boost Die’s guitar in the chorus, everything else was a mess.

I like what Tue did on Arche, I think he really nailed the atmosphere and vibe that album wants to portray.
His work on DSS though, was very flat, I think, and even more so on The Unraveling. It’s strange - I’m usually a huge fan of Tue’s work. I’m also generally a fan of Dan Lancaster’s work but idk what the fuck happened with TIW.

I would love a full record with Jens as well. If he mixed Diru the way he mixed old Opeth, or Devin Townsend’s Deconstruction, I’d be in love.

Straight to Psycho 3, huh? So, I guess, we’re not getting full PVs of all TIW and post-TIW clips.
I guess, we gonna get Ningen (because there was a PV with blurred out gore), TWOM, and maybe Ochita (in case if there’s some drawn gore/war footage that was cut-out (similar to ASOM/Vinushka)).

ranunculus youtube upload seemed edited out I think?

All PVs starting from Utafumi (and excluding Vestige of Scratches ones) are edited, but I don’t remember if there was any censorship in Ranunculus.

Ranunculus PV is 3:49 in duration vs the 4:25 song, PV song starts at 0:05.

that’s almost a minute of cut-out content, considering there might be stuff like extra breakdowns/intros in the music video prolonging it (which is unlikely for ranunculus given its pace, but who knows)

Well, as I said, all TIW and post-TIW clips on YouTube are edited to be shorter.
Utafumi has shorter intro and shorter 1st verse.
Ningen has shorter 1st verse and shorter transition to 2nd verse (iirc)
TWOM on YouTube is only 30% out of the whole clip.
Ochita ends at around 2:20
Oboro has middle & 1st solo gutted out.

However, Average Psycho compilations were specifically made for censored PVs like Obscure, Saku, Unraveling, Revelation of Mankind and etc, while Average Fury/Blasphemy/Sorrow were just PV compilations of every released clips (or those that weren’t shown yet, like Uroko). E.g. despite initially getting full-length Unraveling and RoM clips via Average Sorrow, we only got uncensored versions with Average Psycho 2.

Thus, I don’t think that we’ll get all those six PVs in Average Psycho 3, since only 2 of those were obviously censored (not just edited to be shorter, but censored), which are Ningen wo Kaburu (blurred out gore of two naked people on the table) and TWOM (during This Way to Self-Destruction, when they were performing TWOM there was a full PV playing on a background, but it had that triangle overlay). And, unless there’ll be some gore during the birth scene in Ranunculus, I kinda doubt we’ll get full PV in Psycho 3.

Ranunculus basically looks like 『the』 Dir en grey video to feature an in your face exploding fetus shot in slow motion. I agree that single videos don’t seem like they fit the mold for the psycho collections, but I’ll wait until they announce the exact contents - who knows what they might film on top of the released videos.

I’m 110 % hyped for TWOM PV alone.

Well, I’ll be glad to be wrong :joy: If we gonna get some sudden fetus yeetus in 3D for Ranunculus - I’m fine with that

Meanwhile, I would like to apologize to @zeus for taking my time in writing my thoughts on that modified version of TIW. Despite loving the album, it was a bit tiring to listen each song back-to-back so I could compare them.
So, I was comparing it to the Deluxe Edition .flac from jpopsuki, listened through Audio-Technica ATH-M40X headphones.
And pardon in advance for very bare & amateur comparison notes

Keibetsu to Hajimari - Sounds less fuzzy, cleaner (as if put through the filter) through the whole song. Drums during 00:12-00:30 & 01:31-01:40 sounds comprehensible compared to original.
Devote my life - Again, mostly sounds a lil bit cleaner (but now that guitar feedback in the intro is more annoying). Kyo sounds more quiet during “Chichi yo Haha yo Yurushite hoshii”.
Ningen wo Kaburu - Feels like the overall volume was a bit lowered (especially guitars?).
Celebrate empty howls - Guitars are quiet once again (which makes vocals more prominent). Again, feels cleaner.
Utafumi - For some reason that guitar feedback before 1st verse has been shortened? A lil bit cleaner, the usual.
Rubbish heap - Less noisy/grainy. Feels like guitars are quiet/less compressed?
Aka - In original intro, bass guitar overshadowed everything. Now it’s drums (or at least hi-hat?). Guitars aren’t as loud during the chorus (and Die’s tremolo before solo as well).
Values of madness - As usual, guitars aren’t loud. Don’t really notice anything else.
Downfall - Damn, intro is now so quiet compared to original. Backvocals are quiet too. Feels kinda empty when guitars aren’t that loud. Kyo also seems quiet’er. But whole songs seems more clear now.
Followers - Again, guitars aren’t as loud, but this time it is not that noticeable.
Keigaku no Yoku - Guitars are quiet during faster sections, but that’s it.
Zetsuentai - Strangely enough, during 1st verse it feels like all instruments are a bit quiet (which emphasizes vocals a lot). Again, guitars are cleaner/quieter.
Ranunculus - Hm. For some reason, vocals feel filtered this time. Guitars aren’t loud once again.

So, if I ignore this redundant department of redundancy and give an overall opinion - yeah, that modified version sounds clean, much easier for ears. It should be a go-to option for those, who didn’t like how TIW was mastered.
As for myself, I am kinda confused. Like, I hear some noticeable advantages, but I am so used to these loud guitars (and prefer them over whatever Tue Madsen was doing) that I can’t prefer the modified edition over the normal one. Still, an interesting experience nevertheless.

Gonna compare CD2 as well (which should be more interesting since different people mastered it?).

Utafumi and Ochita having single edits is ridiculous, but then when they edit longer songs like Rinkaku and TWOM the songs are pretty much useless

Utafumi full version is gonna be great. I wonder if they’re gonna throw an oddball non-single video in the collection and what it could be.

god i hope so, PLEASE do something interesting

We ain’t missing much with Utafumi, tho.

And about non-single video… If we gonna receive Average Angst collection after new album - then that non-single video will be from that album, I guess.
Although, remembering that Devote My Life was initially proposed as single (but then we got Ningen wo Kaburu), I’m low-key hoping for DML getting a very crazy MV.
