DIR EN GREY

I was just thinking that since they re-filmed Zan, and ochita PV had vaguely ash-y looking color grading, along with attire and jewelry on Kyo, they might do something like that again

I’m ready for Uroboros part II.

Tetsu Tachibana from Yakuza 0 looks exactly like Kyo.

It seems that DIR EN GREY will provide the theme song for the Amazon Prime pro-wrestling event “Dragon Gate”.

So I guess we’ll get a new song soon? Unless it’s an old one… or a solo song by Die, since he announced it at a wrestling event today.

Not usually bothered about the mv collections but the more recent videos have all been pretty awesome so am actually pretty hyped to see what thr contents for this are actually going to be.

Tbh, I just want a new album at this point. They used to be so prolific. Their release schedule has become glacial recently.

Here’s a breakdown of how long it’s been between major releases (apologies if my maths is wrong):

MISSA - GAUZE: 2 years
GAUZE - MACABRE: 1 year 2 months
MACABRE - kisou: 1 year 4 months
kisou - six Ugly: 6 months
six Ugly - VULGAR: 1 year 2 months
VULGAR - Withering: 1 year 6 months
Withering - MARROW: 1 year 11 months
MARROW - UROBOROS: 1 year 9 months
UROBOROS - DSS: 2 years 9 months
DSS - THE UNRAVELING: 1 year 8 months
UNRAVELING - ARCHE: 1 year 8 months (not counting remake EP, DSS - ARCHE is 3 years 4 months).
ARCHE - TIW: 3 years 9 months (!)
TIW - now: 3 years 2 months (and no album in sight)

You say that, but I do feel the song writing has gotten a lot deeper and complex since the earlier days. Why rush? If they take a long time to produce something but when they do it’s killer what’s the problem? Rather that than churning out mediocre stuff more frequently.

Kyo does sukekiyo + his lil clothing line now. they could afford to just write music, tour, and do some easy extra money shit like modeling during their pre-WTD period, that era is effectively gone.

I was upset they didn’t release a lockdown album like so many other artists, but well… I guess they all got old and tired now.

I agree with the sentiment of mediocrity. We don’t want that.

However, the songwriting has always been decent. Thinking back on their earlier epics like mazohyst, ain’t afraid to die, MACABRE, etc, the complexity is still there (aside from MOAB era, which is very simple). I’d even argue that the writing density in the DSS era became almost a self-parody, where every song tried to throw every idea and the kitchen sink into one pot. Just look at the MACABRE remake, where they changed absolutely nothing (except the added coda) because the original song was already perfect.

I’d also argue that TIW was the most uninspired record they’ve put out by far since it rehashes several ideas and formulae we’ve heard before, and that took them the most amount of time to write.

To be fair, starting with DSS they had several reasons to take more time between two albums.

In 2012, they went on hiatus because Kyo deepthroated himself too hard. Plus, DSS cycle was overall very long (DSS>Rinkaku>Unraveling>STU>Budokan), about 2.5 years (with that 9 month hiatus in 2012). AND then we had to wait 9 months from Arche’s announcement to its release (which WAS too fucking long).

Then, Arche’s cycle was pretty short (release in 2014.12.10>Budokan in 2016>02.05-06). BUT, they had From Depression To__ tour which took 1year&4months. Gladly, after that we got TIW pretty quickly (announced in 2018.06.29 and released in 2018.09.26). So, I wouldn’t say it took that much time to write TIW - it’s more like they started to record it pretty late.

And then we have whole cow-id stuff happening in 2020 & 2021, because of which they didn’t tour and opted for random stuff like livestream concert, livestream playlists, interviews and stuff. On one hand, they could put more time & effort into writing an album (since they are more than used to writing songs by sending guitar/drum tracks to each other via internet). On another - we at least got two singles that will be included in upcoming album.

So, I am still cautiously optimistic that they aren’t doing too bad. Plus, last DESPERATE gig is happening on 13th of November, so I’m expecting some major announcement after it… Now, if we won’t receive any news until January’s gigs, then I’ll be pissed.
EDIT. Kinda wanted to say that Gazette did jack shit between final Ninth gig and MASS, so it could be worse.

Oh yeah, totally. It feels like they avoided writing TIW until they contractually had to meet a deadline. The whole thing feels rushed. I actually wonder if the mastering sucks because they sent it to the engineer at the last possible second.

I will admit that yes, I am moaning because I’m itching for more music. However, there’s another reason for that. Great art should never be rushed, although it can come together very quickly once thought through well enough beforehand. But if artists stop writing, the outcome is often lazy because they’ve gotten rusty from not creating. Just look at Guns & Roses Chinese Democracy and Tool’s Fear Inoculum (respectable but highly derivative of their own music).

I’m just hoping they’ve been secretly putting together an incredible album that’ll blow me away like the last one didn’t.

Yeah, the fact the tour a damn lot probably doesn’t help speed things up at all. Isn’t rh announcement for the tour basically the Average Psycho 3 collection? As that has been on a gig flyer or two I think.

Yup, and sukekiyo has a new album out in Winter 2021 (『SALUS』). With both of these already announced, I can’t see a new Dir album happening for the next 6 months at least. Hopefully I’m proven wrong.

I mean…

Other than that, there’s sukekiyo in December and the PV collection in January… it’s hard to say when DEG will release something new, currently ><
Then again, I personally don’t care, as long as there’s nothing re-recorded on it. Since they’ll probably use Sogai as the live DVD/Blu-ray and I already have that, and their regular music has become so, so boring… ._.

Y’know, Vitium was announced 2 weeks before Arche’s release. And it was released 3 months after. So, who knows.
