Has the SUSTAIN THE UNTRUTH DVD menu always been this LQ? Or did I mess up my rip? ô.o
DVD’s cap out at 720p30 max resolution. It was just always that shit. In general, Japan needs to adopt Blu-Ray en masse and pass the cost on to the consumer. I was completely unaware of this limitation myself - I thought it was 1080p - and I bought the NAZARE DVD only to discover hideous macro blocking and other visual quality issues. Upscaling with AI can help, but it’s got issues of it’s own (@koutetsuhime knows more) and that’s completely unnecessary if visual kei invests in BR as the main format going forward.
As expensive as Japanese blu rays are, you really don’t want them to switch to it completely (though options are good!) Just… $90+ for a concert bluray is so painful. Especially compared to last western one I bought being $15 lol
DVDs also vary in quality too (especially the older they are, of course). For instance, Dadaroma’s live dvd is reallly good quality and would be a breeze to upscale to HD or probably even 2k or 4k.
As for the SUSTAIN THE UNTRTUH dvd, doesn’t really look like a messed up rip to me at least. Sometimes menus are worse quality than the rest of the disc. Hmm, does it not look the same as when you play the actual dvd?
I mean…I paid $70 for NAZARE and you saw what I got. I would have definitely paid the extra $20 to have gotten something that didn’t look like play doh. I’m an old head - I’m used to being overcharged for everything LOL. But then again…considering that the source video looks like 480p I’m not sure if there was anything there to save to begin with.
I should also amend my earlier statement. DVDs can fit up to 4.7 GB of data on it, but it has to use a format compatible with the DVD spec. The DVD spec specifies MPEG2 as the encoding of the video, and then the output to either be composite, RGB, or HDMI. In order to make sure that the DVD will play back on the majority of devices, newer formats and techniques can’t be used. You can burn a 1080p file to a DVD but it might only play back on a computer.
DVD quality can be good, especially if you record at BR quality and then mix down to DVD quality! I’ve just gotten one too many okay looking DVD’s recently and I often find myself wishing it was a Blu-Ray instead.
That’s why I bought the PHALARIS edition with Blu-Ray.
You forgot dual layer DVDs, which most newer releases use, that can hold up to 8.5GB or 4 hours of DVD video.
$70 is pretty expensive for a DVD release even from Japan, typically more like $40-45. Definitely having both options is the best way to go! (or for blurays to get more affordable from Japan lol)
I’m glad Dir offers it! I can’t wait to see it and listen to the new album, especially after the release of the new visuals.
I compared it to someone else’s ISO, it looks the same there.
Haven’t tried playing the DVD yet, but I doubt it’s different.
The pic doesn’t even look like 720p quality, tbh. So weird, did no QA occur? xD

They briefly show him playing piano on the Macabre tour DVD.
I heard he’s epic on a didgeridoo.
I’m pretty sure he knows how to play guitar as well. He said one in an interview that he no longer uses a an actual guitar to do demos and instead has a guitar-like MIDI controller he plays with.
