DIR EN GREY

Id say he’s pretty good, his basslines are pretty creative, like he doesnt always just follow the guitars and his basslines carry quite a few songs like Rinkaku for example, how can you not love whats going on there?

Bass usually gets a rep for being the least skilled role, even though it isn’t. If you gotta ask if a bassist is good, he’s great.

I blame it on metal bands having “the friend who was least good at guitar” take the bass role and just playing root notes

But yeah, people who are actually good bass players spent a LOT of time honing their craft - the role it fills is very different from guitar and most of the time should not be approached as “guitar but lower pitched”

Some of Arche is actually in C#! There’s at least a few songs that are played in it (mostly Die’s ballads), and I think there’s at least one song where Die is playing a 6-string while Kaoru is on his 7 (although I could be thinking of a song from DSS, I’m not sure)

This is all very true, depends on the style of music though like some extreme metal would get very muddled if bass lines went too far a field from the guitars too often but when i write stuff i always try and get a bit creative with the basslines where possible. It’s interesting what defines a good bass player though as for me its not always about technical skill but rather how their parts fit with the rest of the song. I really like Misui, but my biggest gripe with them is the bass… Dude is obviously very good at playing but he does waaaaaaayyy too much and often to me just doesnt feel fitting with the song, almost like hes trying to outshine the guitars ALL the time which to me doesnt necessarily make for a very good bass player.

Only 2 songs are in Drop C#, and they are one of my favorite from the album. 14 in Drop A or Drop A&D.

I confirm what I said on my previous post.

I gave Dum Spiro Spero a re-listen recently and I was surprised at just how good it is, and how unique it was in the Dir en grey discography to that point.

While Uroboros feels like a continuation of Marrow of a Bone, adopting mid 2000’s metal conventions, Dum Spiro Spero reaches a level of ingenuity that often gets overlooked. I suspect it’s because people loved Uroboros so much and craved more of the Marrow/Uroboros sound.

Instead, Dir en grey shifted into a wildly different direction and made something I find to be rather remarkable. It’s also evidently had the biggest impact on the band, because much of the groundwork that was set with DSS has been carried forward into Arche, The Insulated World, and Phalaris.

Which makes sense, because if I remember correctly Uroboros at the time was marketed as being the culmination of the bands career to that point, or some similar marketing pitch.

They always do that. It’s always “current DIR EN GREY” this, “今のDIR EN GREY” that.

I remember seeing someone saying that Kyo has been ripping off another vocalist since diru started doing extreme metal, anyone knows?

I’ve seen a lot of people compare him to Mike Patton, but the comparison is usually done favorably and as an acknowledgement of Kyo’s range. Can’t say I’ve seen anybody say Kyo is just ripping anybody off though, but now I’m super curious

I would really be interested in who they were saying he’s ripping off of since the band is so eclectic but I’m just going to say it’s fake news.

When do you guys think we can expect a new single announcement? Feel its time for Kyo coming back to good old DeG now.

Probably not for a good while. The primary Phalaris tour JUST wrapped up, they’re about to do a throwback tour in Europe early next year and I’m HOPING they announce a North America leg of that as well. Plus with DEG, Sukekiyo, AND PB all releasing material within the last year and a halfish, it’s probably just tour mode for a while for Kyo

MAYBE, we could get something like The World of Mercy, at something like middle-late 2024. But I would only expect something new at 2025

Next release is going to be this decade’s six track mini album.

That would be a pretty good idea at this time to be fair.

At some point after WtD Kyo probably decided to take inspiration from Mike Patton knowing it would expand his technique. But I don’t agree that he’s ripping him off at all.

In 2008 when Kyo began wearing tracksuits, he was ragged for ripping off Mike Patton because Pattton did the same for a while.

I have no doubt Kyo looks up to Patton, so it was a joke in the online VK/Deg fan base crowd that Kyo was dressing like his senpai Mike.

I always held Korn responsible for the tracksuits, I never knew lol
