Dislikes in the Beginning Part of a Song

Ive been meaning to make the thread but I kept forgetting. I’ll prob post some of mine later. idk if a thread specific to this exists so if there is please move this

Idk if others feel the same way about Japanese songs in general. Especially those who have a lot of songs in their phone. I find myself sometimes skipping a lot of songs while shuffle is active. In some cases it’s because I’m in the mood for a certain atmosphere or melody while other times it’s I just don’t like the songs first 30-ish seconds but the rest is amazing. Even for songs that do fit my mood at that time.

For some reason I feel a bit lost when I’m scrolling threw my shuffled like I’m finding something to pull me in. In some cases I tell myself I’ll settle with this but then later when I’m on my computer I go back to listen to some of those songs I skipped and I’m like “This song is still good but why do I skip it?” I realized that in certain cases the first couple of seconds doesn’t grab me.

I made this thread just for fun and I’m also curious to see if others feel the same way I do about certain songs. In my opinion I feel the first 30 seconds or so is a critical timeframe for any track. It helps grab the attention of any person who listens to a song. What are some songs you dislike the beginning parts of? What do you not like about it?

  • What songs do you still like but skip frequently because of the beginning?

  • What songs do you still like but skip just the beginning part?

When listening to a new song, the first 2 minutes are critical for me as that typically gets you through to the first chorus. I often find myself thinking about whether a song starts out as a banger vs the beginning acting as a vehicle for something richer later in the track so it’s a constant battle.

I struggle with a song opening the most when it sounds way too similar to another song’s opening and it can color my entire impression of the song even if the rest of it is pretty good. I had this struggle recently with Slow Emotion by Belle. The beginning is extremely similar to Juuyonsai no Knife by the GazettE. I like both songs but whenever the former starts my brain just screams ‘WE DID THIS ALREADY.’ I’m not sure that there are songs where I really skip the beginning, I just slap an internal ‘be patient’ label on them haha.

I can’t say there’s a song that fits into this category for me, since if I dislike the beginning of a song I’ll probably dislike the rest.

However, there is a (non-Japanese) example of this that I think does kind of fit. I like the first 2/3 of “The Summoning” by Sleep Token. I can’t stand the last 1/3. Kills the whole song for me.

For specific examples (pending more examples):

  • Blu-BiLLioN - with me (the original, not the fix on their self-titled best-of album) sticks out like a m’fer. The flat/off-key intro vocals throw me for a loop every time. Decent song otherwise, but they have better songs in their catalog, so I tend to skip this one.
  • Sorta counts, but on Royz - Aerial cord, the vocals start at 0:45, and if you catch how loudly Subaru first breathes in, your brain can’t tune out his stupid-loud inhales for the rest of the song. Full skip when that happens, but one of my favorite songs of theirs.

Generally, songs with really slow intros or spoken-word sections, I completely skip unless I’m listening through the full album. I also like to ease into heavier songs, so I tend to stay away from tracks (or full-album listens) that go full-tilt at the beginning until I hit some midpoint in my listening sessions. Circus, polka, or “hot jazz” (“club” sounding) in the intro also deserves the skip, at least on shuffle. That’s about it.

Millenial sovl vs zoomer brainrot for sure!!!

I have this problem with Goujinsangoku (拷訊惨獄) by Deviloof. SE in the beginning is too long for me and then instruments start playing and… this part is too long too and simple.

I love this song but I think SE should be separeted as track on its own then I wouldn’t skip it too often.

Only thing that comes to my mind is if a song starts with any variant of someone saying “ladies and gentlemen” but most of time when it happens I end up disliking the entire song.

Songs that start off REALLY heavy and loud right from the start, like Bakeneko by Kiryu, just stress me out. It’s just a style choice that I do not fuck with because I am very easily startled and it usually results in me twitching violently in surprise because LOUD NOISE!! Also can be a very unpleasant surprise to the ears if your volume was up for a quieter song before.

As a playlist user I don’t skip songs, I just don’t add them to any playlists.

On another note I am still waiting for a personal apology from Lime for whatever that opening to Kizu’s Bee-autiful Days was :triumph: I felt betrayed

If I don‘t like the beginning part I usually skip to the chorus to evaluate the song.

I am too lazy for that tbh
Also I remember it really frustrated me when it came out and I heard.
I like their other songs, so I don’t mind if there is one song I rather don’t listen to

To keep it simple songs you have in your playlist that you don’t like the beginning to but still keep it in your playlist because you still like the song

100% this lol. I needed that beginning breakdown then it went all theatrical vibes. I was like why fk no :sob:.

It’s weird I still like the beginning of that song but it def could have done so much more with that.

Idk weird I liked the beginning to this song. It’s a good suspense buildup to the rest of the song. Chaotic in it’s own way but I do agree it should have been it’s own SE still. It’s weird because usually parts like that are SE track but deviloof decided to just make it part of the song.

It’s not that I dislike the beginning, but I feel that the intro to Houmunsha X could be separated into another song in the album. I like circus music, but it is way too long

i realized my local library has a bunch of what seems to me random japanese music on its hoopla streaming account.

so I downloaded an old album and streamed it in the car from my phone. after what I thought was the end of the album, i got jumpscared by an extra song:

that apparently i had apparently gotten used to taking out of playlists/been skipping back in the day purely because i hate the opening organ.
ive recently discovered i do actually like the rest of the song lmao

Situations like this is exactly what I mean. I have this trouble. I’ll hate some weird intro or beginning or something so I’ll hit skip but I actually like the rest of the song. I can relate

I hate Songs which teases segments which doesn’t get properly gets touched upon later.
Different refrain melody you have only the first time like for example, dadaroma - Zouka to Kalashnikov.

And whatever the hell this intro is
