GACKT YELLOW FRIED CHICKENz will resume activities

I’m glad he’s back to singing again, but since the original YFC debut coincided with my absolute lack of interest in whatever Gacktessa was doing at the time - have they ever released any original music, or was it just a new touring band and a bunch of covers of his old music?

He could also rent the yacht, not necessary own it

It was just a joke about him just doing the yellow fried chicken revival because he needs money

Must be fun having an Yatch

I understand gackt

I hope they do more press conferences.

This…this is a JRO post about YELLOW FRIED CHICKENz. Why are we talking about yacht prices?

Because these days yacht prices are more interesting than whatever Gackt is up to these days lmao

I joke…kind of…lol

They had original music at the time they debuted. Their music that they performed was a mix of originals and re-arrangements or covers of a handful of his solo stuff; I can’t quite remember which ones, as I hated YFC (Though, Shinya’s (LUNASEA) participation as the drummer was pretty cool, as well as that initial announcement of the formation, which was entertaining).

But they changed their “theme/persona” later that year due to the Earthquake/Tsunami.

Did they end up bringing this back later on?

What’s the whole “yacht controversy”? I must habe missed something

Oops, yea. True. It still feels out of place, because it felt like a short lived project he founded exclusively for touring Europe back in the days. I think he even said something like that in an interview.

@xyzzy_2 We were just making fun of Gackt needing money for something and yachts are a common thing millionairs buy. Someone argueed he don’t need more money to buy a yacht as he is already a millionair. So I gave yachts prices for reference. Because Gackt sure is rich but not Elon Musk rich. There are things he can not afford.

Originally it was just a new touring band (different from his backing band GacktJob), at the time I had the impression that the shows were much more “down-to-earth” rock style gigs, as opposed to the grand theatrical productions he had been known for (this is Gackt we’re talking about so “down-to-earth” is meant to be taken in the loosest way as possible, lol).

He soon released a best-album with the “friend chickenz” expression in the title but it wasn’t re-recordings or anything, just a regular collection of previously released songs, and it was released under the Gackt name (not YFC) so that was a bit confusing. At this point they didn’t release any new music under this name. He did a Europe tour with this best-of material, with the then-current YFC musicians.

Next year, he finalized YFC as an actual separate project, this formation was notable for including an American vocalist called Jon (this is the easiest way to differentiate the previous year’s “touring-only” YFC vs the newer “touring and writing new music” YFC). They released a couple singles and a full-length album of original/new material, then after some touring Gackt announced that the “current version/lineup” of YFC will be disbanding.

That’s the most coherent way I can describe, piecing it together from memory / old blog entries / forum discussions.

My theory is that by resurrecting the YFC name, maybe he’d like to get back into performing music in a more carefree/laid-back way, not as meticulously over-produced as in the old days, just having fun I guess. We’ll see… (still, the YFC name leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, lol)

All correct!

Maybe to elaborate the concert experience back then:

The first Gackt Europe tour was announced as a “Gackt” tour, so everyone basically just saw it as a backing band.
The concerts sold out within like 30 minutes (~1200 cap) and people were fucking hyped. The setlists were basically a best of Gackt with a focus on rock-ish songs. People kept chanting “VANILLA” because… that’s his song??? and he didn’t play it, so people were quite disappointed. I think many people also rather expected the pop songs, because that’s what he’s mainly known for.
I also remember the cringe “MCs” where the band would shred the instruments while he screamed “DO YOU WANT TO LOVE ME? DO YOU WANT TO FUCK ME? SHOW ME HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO FUCK ME!” and wanted people to chant “Y F C!” for like 10 minutes straight.
I remember him slipping due to the humidity and falling into the crowd in Munich lol

The second tour was explicitely branded as YFC and the members (incl. Jon) were officially announced. They chose bigger venues (~1600 cap) and significantly more dates (first tour were 5 dates, second was 14 !!! dates). Ticket sales were going slow because of the mentioned factors). None of the people I know was eager to see him with YFC.
The setlist was a hot mess: 90% (at that point) unreleased YFC songs that nobody knew and cared for (= people were just standing and staring at the stage) and 10% songs he played the first time…and yes, vanilla finally.
He also did that cringe “YOU WANNA FUCK ME” etc. (now together with Jon putting a water bottle in his crotch, spraying it into the crowd → 45:20. You can even see people literally facepalming at it)

I don’t remember any of the gigs being sold out actually and even on the Berlin DVD you never see the “whole” crowd, it just cuts off at the point where the hall was empty or they chose a really low angle for the camera lol
Visible at 1:04:09 or 31:44

Still incredible numbers from today’s perspective, but for 2011 where the VK hype wasn’t really gone yet and given how famous and popular Gackt was here back then, it’s kinda odd.
With the current y2k nostalgia and all millennials having enough money for concerts, it’s not a stupid move to tour Europe solo, but I think the impression of “the setlist was odd, we had to chant YFC for 10 minutes and I didn’t know most of the songs” stuck more and if he tours under YFC, it would probably mostly be the younger fans who haven’t seen him live before.

idk about this part too since he’s still technically VK adjacent which means everybody unretires out of nowhere every 5-10-20 years when you least expect it - but he did announce that he retired from doing the big production, visual-driven concerts - there was a last visualive tour in Japan around 2010, after which I kinda gave up on him altogether since I thought he’d go straight for jpop sound, and everything about this new band… his old band going away, added second vocalist I had no clue about… is just really confusing, but I guess it was his/his management’s way to appeal to the western fans for a short while.

He had done more toned down, themed shows (non-theatrical VisualLives) before (and after?) YFC; Drug Party, the School-themed one that I can’t remember fully what it was called were the bigger ones. The past couple year’s he’s been doing slow/midtemp shows “Last Songs w/ K” (a pianist), so he’s no stranger to non-theatrical shows.

He actually mentioned that he was thinking of reviving YFC some months ago; it looks like he decided to move forward with it. His voice does seam to be fully back and he’s been settling back into his usual workout and such routines, and it was said that he was coming back into his career gradually, so perhaps this is more of an extension of ‘getting back into it’ type of thing?

@Kumanosuke Were you at any of the shows?
I remember a lot of stories from that tour about the MC’s lol That’s Gackt for ya.

I do wonder though, if it’s kind of a ‘missed the boat’ thing though, for him to tour outside of Asia now. I mean, he was one of the biggest and most wanted artist to tour back then and he didn’t, other than with YFC (though, I remember people being excited for YFC and generally liking YFC more than not). And there seams to be a lot of negative hate on him by the newer gen of jrock fans for mostly reasons of that’s a popular thing to do now (because he’s so, eccentric, different, weird, whatever, ect) so…
