Matenrou Opera - 14th anniversary Re-live 10/25 @初台DOORS

We make it out of Dark Princes Night in slightly better time than we expected. Just around 5 pm. We run for Nakano Station to take the Keio for one stop, only to hop on a JR for one more stop. Getting off at Hatsudai, we leave the station directly into the grounds of the New National Theatre. Hey! I remember this place! Walking in the light rain, we spot our destination…the same place I met Brandon last year for Hizaki.

We get to the door just as the opening notes start. 5:31, just in the knick of time.

Today’s show has two purposes, first, as a repeat of five year’s ago’s 14th anniversary show. The second, as Yo’s birthday!

Matenrou Opera are really fantastic live. They’ve always been one of those bands that never lined up with my schedule, but I wanted to make a point of catching them. Brandon and Jeremy even switched their plan of going to Crazy Monsters Halloween Day 1 once I told them about this one.

Playing from a variety of their albums, primarily from Justice and Human Dignity but with an appearance from my favourite song of theirs, Anomie’s Hiai to Melancholy, the only thing that could have improved the experience was if my feet weren’t so sore. But that’s kind of a “me” problem. Yuusuke got a lot of love from the audience, and Sono is probably one of the best live vocalists I’ve heard.

The encore call goes up, and I excuse myself to go sit down on the steps until they come back out.

A few minutes later, they head back out. They ask how many people researched the setlist (seeing as how it would have been the same as five years ago). About fifteen people raise their hands, out of about 275-300 people there. They sing Happy Birthday to Yo, and bring out his cake.

They then encore with four newer songs off their latest album. Gotta get those in somewhere.

I say goodbye to Brandon and Jeremy. My stop is a lot farther away than theirs is, and I really need to go rest my feet. That venue was hot, and I’m feeling pretty gross and disheveled after all of that.

Sad fact: This day was supposed to be a 3-parter.

Yes, there was in fact a separate event after this one. A Halloween themed bar bash, Tokyo Decadence at DecaBar from 10 pm - 1 am +

Dress code: Anything alt, fetish or a costume, basically

Featuring acts: The Candy Spooky Theater and Kaya.

Yes, Kaya.

But due to multiple factors (leg pain, my own personal energy bandwidth, wanting to not look like crap, requiring cabs there and back because I didn’t want to get bitched out on public transit for dressing indecent)…I ended up just turning in for the night.

Would have been fun, though…

So glad you got to see Matenrou! I saw them years ago when they came to the US and I was blown away. These guys are true musicians to the core.

Shilfee “solo” - Installation humming painting live 10/26 @Shimokitazawa Blue Monday

Today, after getting some quick groceries and eating a portion of noodles that was probably too big and a portion of meat that was probably too small, I figure that I need to start getting out more. So I take my umbrella, and head out to Koenji for the Koenji street festival.

There’s singers, local Awa Odori cultural groups doing dances and taiko drumming, a representative of the military showing off one of their tanks, food trucks, and a ring set up on the North side for wrestling and idol groups (odd combo, I know). Plenty of stuff to watch and see for free.

After chilling for a few hours and grabbing dinner, it comes time to head to my actual target neighbourhood, Shimokitazawa. You may remember this venue from the last time that I saw Full. He’s become a creature of habit, I suppose.

I know that Shimokitazawa has a Disk Union, so I hope in there to see what I can find.

They have a promotion where you can qualify for 15% off if you buy 3 used items. So I pick up an album each by The Back Horn and Pierrot, and I find a 7” Thee Michelle Gun Elephant single.

So I sit around until about 5:40, when I head up to the lineup for the doors. Tickets aren’t numbered at all, so it’s first come, first sit.

There are definitely some familiar faces I recognized from last time. I have a full sized chair this time, because it seems like the chair’s height from the ground is geared to which row you’re in this time. High stools at the back, squat little director’s chairs in front.

There’s a photo wall, where prints of photos that he and his band members have taken are on display and for sale. A see through mesh screen is in front of the stage. The ticket for the show is in German for some reason.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t quite know what this live would be about. Humming as in, he hums along with the song? He paints a hummingbird? Will there be any singing?

So he comes out on…floor and it’s time that I test out a trick that Jeremy showed me.

The “transcribe” feature. Run Google Translate, and set it to transcribe and it should (hypothetically) pick up audio in the source language and translate it for you.

I’m not able to get a great test, because he said that he wants to get started right away (literally).

He starts with Oboro Watage, off of Pinhole. Pleasantly surprised, as I couldn’t recall any Nookicky songs last time. Like last time, he sounds really good after all these years.

At the same time that he’s singing, he picks up two paintbrushes and starts going to work on the mesh screen. He had said before that he was already quite sore from the previous two shows, so this must have taken a lot out of him to be kneeling, stretching, standing for the whole set.

“I’m in trouble”, he says after the first song, getting a chuckle from the audience.

Following up, we get Furusu from Noon Moon, and Su-Ochi no Okina Hina from that same album a couple songs later. One or two other songs may have been Nookicky too, but the instrumentals weren’t exactly the same as the originals so I mainly had to go by Full’s vocals/lyrics to match the songs.

“It’s hot!” He proclaims, heading backstage to turn on the AC.

After Looping Story Teller, we hear the familiar melody of Zujou no Ishi, a Guniw Tools song from last time followed by Fade Story. For our third Guniw song of the set, we get From the Inside this time.

A couple songs later, we finally get our initial reveal of what he’s been painting for 55 minutes. But I won’t show you until the finished product.

He still has touch ups, so he starts up Moss Phlox off The right are each other album and eventually starts singing a couple of covers. Not sure exactly what of. Probably at least one Japan song in there.

It’s come time to wrap up the main set, and here’s the result.

Damn.

There were other things I could have hypothetically went to today. I had a ticket to Rorschach Inc’s Halloween show prior to finding out about this. A couple people I know were going to Crazy Monsters Halloween Day 2, and even caught a Mana pick.

But damned if hearing Full sing Guniw Tools, Nookicky and Shilfee songs while frantically painting on a mesh screen isn’t the neatest thing I’ve seen here so far.

10/10, would do again.

He starts talking a bit after he sits down, so I try my translator trick. And…the mic won’t pick up his voice. So much for that.

He points out his two band mates from Shilfee little known, Kuruta and Ruli, who have made it out to this performance. He invites them to head on…floor, to perform a short encore set of Shilfee little known songs. After a few, they start talking about how Chichiro is coming up on its 20th anniversary soon. People start clapping for yet another song, as I suspect that they were waiting for a song that got played the last two days too.

The sound effects start up, deep drum machine echos. We’re getting Dead Leaves, complete with weird opera vocals.

So now that we’re finished, the members pose for photos underneath the arch of Full’s creation.

Now comes the packing up. The more dedicated Full fans stay to help put everything away, and he’s running around for at least 20 minutes before I think to myself that it might not be worth it to stick around. I’ve already taken a Setlist picture (which was technically useless, as it was from the previous two days and not today). Maybe I’ll just drop the Maple Syrup I brought him off with his merch staff.

She does eyeball him though, and encourages me to stick around.

I do get to talk a bit to Kurata, who noticed me standing by my lonesome and decides to chat a bit. He apologizes in advance for his lack of English proficiency but I say it’s daijoubu desu. Between my Japanese and his English, we understand each other just fine. We talk about Guniw Tools and I mention my autographs from all three original members.

So people are starting to approach him, even if he isn’t 100% done packing. He seems to accept it in good spirits, so I decide to be person #4 to approach.

My phone seemed to be acting up, not translating anything at all, so I decide to keep it in as much Japanese as I can remember.

I greet him by saying “Once again, I return to Japan.”

“ええ?”

He doesn’t remember me. Is it the glasses?

So I told him that I was there last November…with the Nookicky records…

Either way, here’s some syrup.

“Oh, Canada?” Followed by a heartfelt thank you for the maple syrup “But, it is quite sweet, isn’t it?”

“Yes, but just use a little bit. You don’t drink it.” He laughed a bit at that. He can have carbs again, but he does have to watch the sugar still.

I say that he must be hurting after all of that standing and kneeling, and tell him to take care before I thank him again and bid him a Mata ne. He thanks me, and bids me another mata ne as he goes to talk to people in the cafe downstairs.

So it’s a bit too late now for that onsen that I was wanting to check out to ease my muscles. Tomorrow will be my first real test for endurance as far as furi is concerned.

I figure if Full can do all of that, I have no right to complain.

Mata ne

Kane to Juusei- 鐘ト銃声LIVEツアー2025 後半戦 Tour Final 10/27 @ Ebisu Liquidroom

So my test has finally come. After a few days of dealing with soreness, I have an actual concert with almost constant furi participation, that I’m actually going to have a good position for (S102)

But before that, I decided to take a trip out to the Tama Zoological Park, as I’ve heard that they have a safari portion.

Just you fuckers wait…

So, it’s a pretty big place. Big enough, and with enough hills that I don’t think I’ll get through the place without being too sore for tonight.

The lion bus takes us through the enclosure, which is already quite visible enough that we could have gotten great shots even without needing to be inside.

One special thing they do is rub a bit of meat on these posts on the side of the bus to entice a lioness to come up close.

Debating whether I want to find an onsen to rest up, or if I just want to head to Liquidroom, I figure that every option is too far away to be feasible, so I make my way to the venue.

Got there just before merch doors opened, aaaand, no 2shots period. Bummer. But, I do get a copy of the DVD from last year’s Halloween show that I attended, and a new Chill acrylic.

After grabbing some dinner at Lawson, I head back before they open doors to the floor, and I see a small group of Western fans with a couple of cosplayers arrive. Bet they were extra bummed at no 2shots.

I take my spot in the 5th row on Uru’s side, and decide to sit until it’s time.

Just that feeling of overwhelming excitement that I rarely see for other VK bands these days. Kaneto Juusei fans are extremely loud, particularly where Uru is concerned. Too bad for them that it’s his last show, along with Eishin’s.

Yes, you heard that right. Half of the band is leaving after this show. We still don’t know just what Chill and Yuriko are going to do after this. Support members? New bassist/drummer?

Apparently, Uru now has a project where he’s on vocals? “Sky Kiss”. And Eishin is now a…NEET? According to his new profile name?

Either way, they start off with two of their biggest go-tos, Tokyotomushokukobayashiakihito(28) and seishounensigatsunoyuutsu followed by another second EP song, Tokyo kaihouku.

So far, I’m doing pretty good for keeping up with the furi.

They keep going strong, with intermittent breaks for the audience getting to member call. Honestly, I can only hear Uru’s name in all of the screaming and barking. Wonder how they’re going to fare with him gone.

During an MC, someone calls out, trying to get the bands attention. Someone on the other side of the venue has collapsed. I get the impression that this happens often at their shows. They keep asking “okay? Okay?” and they alert staff to call for someone to help. They mention what happened at the Halloween show last year when someone also collapsed.

Uru talks about something in June, when he knew that he’d eventually leave the band.

They continue on, Chill getting into character a bit for manatsunotobira. Uru starts throwing picks into the crowd, and I swear I felt one land near me, but couldn’t locate it.

This is a loooong set. Especially for my sore ass legs. So, I decide to put something to the test inspired by @zaa_zaa reports. Can furitsuke make a terrible band sound decent, or make a decent band sound great?

So I leave my spot for the encore call. I make my way to the back for the first encore, at least.

The guys come out and start bantering back and forth. Eishin talks about him leaving, that this experience of being with them has been important to him. Maybe he’s not the best with saying goodbyes. The audience forgives him.

I rest my feet and just listen as they start with Rinkai Nostalgia.

Still not bad, have to admit. Not that much different. Still, nothing quite beats participating. I don’t think this band will ever quite be the same if they decide to stick around.

This continues for a few songs before they get half into Akai Rhythm, and I decide to go beat the lines and get my cheki first.

I’ll have to admit, I’m waiting a bit longer than expected. I take a little mini setlist that they have for fans, and see why. They had two other songs after Akai Rhythm, Watashi no Shinikata being their obvious ender.

Oh well, truth is, I just wanted to go home and relax. I absolutely need to get some relief before tomorrow’s show.

Dezert - Sacchan birthday Halloween Live 10/28 @ Zepp Shinjuku

So I decide to slow things down this morning. My mission becomes not to go somewhere or get to an Onsen or even be productive at home.

It’s to kill these little buggers

Japanese fruit flies, that have spawned in my apaato. I must have killed almost 12 of them today alone.

Kill one, another seemed to spawn in its place.

After shower, I realize that I have to get going. It’s a Costume dress code today, so I want to get my stuff all tightened up before heading out.

Arriving just in time for the last of merch sales, I snap a couple quick photos.

B12 today, after checks, yet again, 600+ A ticket holders. Seems to be a running theme with this venue.

To rest my feet, I sit down on the steps beside the entrance (which seem to be a free for all for whoever wants to), and attach my Chiaki charm to my bag and to put away my Sacchan towel.

I get to the back of the venue, just immediately behind two ladies at the third tier barricade.

Other than that monitor there, I had about the best view in the house.

Instrumental techs in animal masks do their business while we wait. A couple minutes after start time, and we’re good to go.

It’s Anime character day, Sora coming out as Usagi/Sailor Moon, and the others I…am not familiar with. Miyako wore this long green maid outfit, Chiaki was a schoolgirl character and Sacchan…came out with this barista costume, with a Starbucks bag on his head. It’s apparently from an anime/manga, but I have no clue which one. Their coming is announced by an English AI voiceover that butchers Sacchan’s name.

They start with a song off the new EP, Henshin followed by an oldie Kimi no shikyu o sowaru. Despite my sore neck, I keep up with furi as much as I can (although hand banging is made more difficult by the cat hood).

After a couple more, Chiaki grabs his guitar for a mini set, starting with Bathroom, Contradiction & Hammer, giving each member a chance to solo for the crowd before the light shines on him..,strumming the same note over and over again. The audience gets a kick out of this before they launch into the full song.

After Hakuchi, they pause for an MC. Sora has a medallion that lights up, to everyone saying “kawaiii”. They discuss their costumes.

After that’s it’s a few mainly older tracks, with the exception of Kansen Shojo (which has the spirit of an older track). Sacchan got his own bass solo at the start of Rokkotsu Shojo.

And then…the audience parts. Chiaki heads down into the crowd and sits on a box that they’ve erected in the middle. Those who have been to a Dezert show before knows what this means. Hands in the air, “Hentai, Hentai”

The song starts, and the crowd surrounds him, him making his way through the crowd to the back, a couple security handlers following him to make sure he makes his way through the crowd unmolested. He passes right by me as I’m giving a “hentai!” scream.

The main set closes off with Himitsu and Shinkei to juryoku before they take their leave. Sora flashing the crowd his underwear on the way out, to hoots and cheers.

Now, I may still be sore. I’ve taken two rounds of Tylenol today, but I kind of regret not toughing yesterday out more.

I could bail to try and beat the crowd. But, I already have my merch and from the last time I saw Dezert for a one man, their encore took almost an hour between MC and playing. For the sake of report integrity and getting the most out of my trip, I decide to stay until the end.

Heading back out, they banter a bit at first, Sora still showing off but attempting to remain as stoic as he can dressed like Sailor Moon. Chiaki and Miyako both try and reveal some thigh to try and get similar reactions from the crowd. Sacchan does not.

Suddenly, Chiaki proclaims “Toire!” and leaves the stage. He does not, in fact, have to use the washroom, as he comes out five seconds later with a staff member in an inflatable Velociraptor costume, carrying Sacchan’s cake. He takes a big bite out of it, and Chiaki takes the piss out of him a bit. Starts limping around, saying “I’m an old man, I want to sleep”.

Sacchan pulls out the piano, and Chiaki tells us that it’s okay if we record this next one.

It’s a piano version of Sonan.

I did record it. No, it seems to be too much hassle to upload it. Maybe one day.

At this moment, two of the women in front of me decide to bounce. Yay! (Back) Barricade for me!

After that, we get a few more, including older track Chemical.Drip.Cherry Pie. And then…

Bah-bah-bahdada Saikyoiku desu!

Yeah, time for me to go all out.

I could have sworn they played one more before final goodbyes, but that’s as far as the official setlist goes.

Setlist:

Henshin

Kimi no shikyu o sowaru

Mister Shotgun Girl

Gohatto

Bathroom, Contradiction & Hammer

Adam Payne o sagashite

Choco

Hakuchi

Hocho no Tadashii tsukaikata-jokkohen

Rokkotsu Shojo

Kansen Shojo

Hentai

Himitsu

Shinkei to juryoku

Encore:

So as you can see above, I’m still fully decked out in my Halloween gear, plus glasses. Totally unrecognizable.

I head outside, a short lineup of flyer guys outside as per custom. I get to the guy in the middle, and say “Hisashiburi” as we lock eyes.

Instant recognition, “Oh! You look :eyes:. Welcome back to Japan”

Never change, Kakeru

Leetspeak Monsters presents [Halloween Party 2025] 10/29 @ Akabane ReNY Alpha

Deciding to take in a local onsen after finishing up yesterdays report, doing laundry and making some homemade ramen for brunch, my feet are…not really doing any better.

It’s back to Akabane ReNY today, and my number is good enough this time to not be stuck behind one of two pillars. I pick up a second row spot on the second tier of flooring, dead centre. But not before needing to pay a whole 700¥ for drink fee. Balls.

First up is Neth Priere Cain, who Brandon has yet to see. And holy crap, that’s loud. Distractingly loud. It’s a bit more of an enhanced visual instead of a full costume today. Getting the crowd pumped up with their opener, they go into their most recognizable song ホオジキ、afterwards. Syuri getting a couple of solo opportunities in throughout the set, they wrapped up the set with the signature prayer pose before lowering the curtain.

So, putting my earbuds in to save my hearing from all of the other five sets tonight, I line up for cheki. Brandon passes by me, asking if they have 2shots, but seeing that everyone seems to be getting their cheki in labelled blue envelopes, it looks like it was reservation only. Oh well, an acrylic pin will have to do.

I get back to my spot to find that someone kicked by bag over to squeeze in. That’s the risk you take, I guess.

Next up are マツタケワークス(Matsutake Works), who have been around since 2014, formed by the former vocalist of Himitsu Kessha Kodomo A/Denteku.

They come out rocking the bloody maid look that people have observed in several bands this year. Last year was nurses/doctors, this year is maids. They come out to a skit track of all the members rushing to answer a series of phone calls, bloodied dolls attached to microphone stands and on the centre platform.

So right away, their set is super fun. They have a slightly jazzy electronic feel at first. The furi is really fun. Op, an outstretched arm here from the audience. Little sus but okay.

The second song starts, and nope. The vocalist is definitely Seig heiling. Repeatedly. I try to follow the furi for the rest of the song, but the enthusiasm is gone.

Too bad, they really are a fun band otherwise. It’s just that if I’m going to do the furi, I want to do it all and I just can’t bring myself to do that kind of stuff. There may be some grey area stuff, like if a band did it in the past but not now, or if the furi was strictly audience created and the band had no say in it. But this was pretty egregious.

So to avoid my spot getting encroached on anymore, I plunk myself down to wait for Neu:Noiz. Luckily, the fact that I’m a gaijin acts as a kind of repellent and people give me a wider berth for the next two bands.

Having a hard time finding a full band shot, but it’s Caturday, as they come out with ears, and some tails. Some furi has been modified to cat paws instead of regular hand motions, vocalist Angel-Taka having a lot of fun with this.

Ending off the set with Space Pirates (ch 77.7) #2, a song not on streaming yet in perhaps the most fun and unique furi dances of the night.

Kaijin Nijuu Mensou is next, a two man project from the vocalist and guitarist of Doremidan with support members. I’ve slept on them entirely up until now.

It’s Nurses/Doctors, a year too late for the trend. Opening up with their first single, Aizouo, I can’t help but notice the similarities to Matsutake Works. Both a bit jazzy, both with black, white and blood colour schemes, vocalist with dark twin tails. Hopefully this has a better end.

Switching to a song off the new album, Makoto gives signal to the back to turn up the volume. Good thing I’ve still got those ear buds in. They continue playing a decently energetic set of songs from a variety of their discography, Makoto eventually popping a blood capsule near the end as a nifty stage effect. The final song has fans bringing out their mini flags for the furi portion.

Leaving to go finally exchange my drink token, people have crowded around my spot yet again for DuelJewel. I’ve been meaning to make up for missing them last year.

It’s a Snow White theme tonight. Hayato as Snow White, Natsuki as a woodland critter, Shun as the Wicked Queen, Yuya as the Prince and Val as all seven dwarves (more specifically, him as Happy with six dolls perched on a post on his back).

Starting off, they have a jazzy track on their newest album. Noticed a bit of a trend here. VK bands and their jazzy openers. They throw it back with 2011’s 62, but the remainder of the set was all from the last three years.

What set their performance apart was the closing skit, where they re enact Snow White eating the poisoned apple, followed by being discovered by the Prince. Yuya delivered his lines very dramatically, swearing vengeance in a very J-drama way.

This was followed by an audience chant of “Ki-su! Ki-su!” Hayato making a face as Yuya leaned in. When contact was made, the entire venue erupted in cheers. Perhaps even more enthusiastically than for their actual set. Hayato is revived, and fake-spits on the ground before they take a final bow.

Not long now until Leetspeak Monsters, who have a special Halloween visual.

This set focused on a combination of newer songs and B-sides, with the exception of Black Owl, so I couldn’t say I was very familiar with most of the songs. Yoshi’meer as a blue gargoyle, still showing why he’s the most popular member with how vocal he was.

I decide to head for the merch table ahead of the rush during their final bows. Four cheki, and no 2shot wins later (which, fine by me. Probably not seeing them again this trip), I meet back up with Brandon and Jeremy for some late night BK.

Lyrica Presents Halloween Party #3 10/30 @ Ikebukuro Black Hole

And of course, here come the sniffles.

Been here for just over a week and the inevitable happens. Whether it’s adjusting to the climate, or catching something from a coughing Ojisan on the train, getting at least a bit sick seems inevitable. Let’s hope I can avoid the dreaded ν[NEU]Mo:nia.

Not helping either that my foot pain hasn’t gotten much better. Usually I would have just gotten used to it by now.

Perhaps I’m getting too old for this life.

So I decided to rest up until it was time to leave, heading to Ikebukuro for the first time this trip. A72 today, which got me a respectable centre fifth row spot.

The Gallo have yet to open up their merch sales, so I use the spoon I grabbed from the apartment instead.

They come out, decked out in corpse paint and bloodied black and white outfits, the first few rows already ready with their plate and spoon sets. I’ve never decided to buy one just because I figure every time I see them may be the last.

Who am I kidding? I’ll keep coming back. The set was exactly what I’ve come to expect from them. Fun, engaging furi, some classic mainstays like set ender Incubus, getting us to do the wave for Kokkeishiki sousoukyoku dai-sanban -PHECDA-

I finally do grab that aforementioned plate and spoon, along with a few cheki.

A couple of people around me switch their spots around for BLAZE, and now my view isn’t quite as good. Interestingly enough, the playlist song that’s wrapping up as soon as they go on is the Alexisonfire cover of The Tragically Hip’s Fully Completely. A Canadian double whammy.

Blaze was formed recently by the remnants of Nazare, in Mio and Uta, joined by guitarists Nero (formerly of Kakumay) and Kururu (formerly of Hueye) and drummer Hotaruchan of gulu gulu. So of course, I just had to have the opportunity to check them out.

I couldn’t tell it the theme this time was iconic bandmen looks, but Mio came out very clearly as Kyo, fake blood and everything.

He definitely had the most cheers that night. Although it sounded like the crowd was just yelling “Meow, meow meow!” over and over again.

Blaze sounds more like a traditional melodic metalcore band than Nazare was, perhaps because of the absence of typewriter drumming. From the opener, Luminous until the closer MayDay, it was still clear that we’d get the full range of Mio’d vocals. From soaring choruses to inhale screams.

For the last song of the set, we’re encouraged to rush the front on two occasions. The first time, I don’t get around to it because the lady in front of me doesn’t move forward, but decides to do so in Round 2.

As a result, I get right up close to Mio, he puts his hand on my shoulder, his knee over the lady in front of me, as he lets out this epic inhale scream.

And well…

So I decide I should absolutely get one cheki each.

Which comes with a 2shot. Let’s go Mio.

But first, I really need somewhere to sit down for a minute.

Sumimasening my way through the crowd, I locate Brandon in the back who has met up with some more Twitter mutuals. I decide to stay in the back half of the venue for DAMNED just because my damned feet are too sore to have a good time near the front.

Even as I’m trying to watch this pretty good set, the members all going with something a little different. Hitone is in a red kimono with plain long hair, Sakura is a nun, Kou is a maid with…a katana? I̶ d̶o̶n̶’t̶ e̶v̶e̶n̶ k̶n̶o̶w̶ w̶h̶a̶t̶ S̶u̶i̶c̶a̶’s̶ s̶u̶p̶p̶o̶s̶e̶d̶ t̶o̶ b̶e̶ (He’s Uta). And Masaya is…A̶ h̶o̶s̶t̶ (turns out, he’s DEG’s Shinya in a white suit)

Most of these are probably anime characters…idk. All I know is that I miss the Damned candy.

Can you tell that I’m getting cranky?

So here I am, in a great position to be first or second to grab Damned cheki. But then I’ll get another 2shot…then that’s just more reason for me to stay in this crowded place for another couple of hours.

When I really don’t feel like it.

Don’t feel like it enough to miss Lyrica?

Honestly, yes.

Here’s what they played/looked like, though.

So I do what I should have done days ago. Find an all-night massage place on the street and get my feet and back worked over for 90 minutes.

Let’s hope it works. Or else I know I’m getting too Damned old for all of this.

Bloom Records presents Fucker Halloween 2025 10/31 @ Holiday Shinjuku

Today is the only day this trip where…I actually have no ticket to anything,

So back to Kabukicho, I decide to take a chance on Fucker Halloween, an event that initially required you to buy tickets on a Japan exclusive website that I haven’t dealt with yet. Stated pricing structure was 8000¥ up front for advance tickets. This came with participation in an acrylic trading event, where each advance attendee got a handful of acrylic stands that they could trade with others for their favourite guys. Some gya even coming with signage indicating who they were looking for.

Then, there was a 3000¥ tier for “day of” tickets, and 0¥ for “at the door”. So, me, assuming that this worked like a normal live, assumed that the 3000¥ price was just to buy it through the website before doors opened to get in ahead of the free people, and just wouldn’t come with any trading privileges. Then, free people would come in last and take whichever spot on the floor was free. We were given a wristband that I assumed meant “don’t give this person any free acrylic stands”.

No, no.

Actually, the 3000/0 yen prices are two-tiered tojitsuken pricing. 3000 yen gets you the right to stand on the floor, while free tickets means that you’re corralled into a pen at the very back of the venue. And because I was one of the first tojitsuken in…I was also the last to get rounded up and led to the back.

Balls.

Could have explained that a bit better in promotional materials, Bloom. Like “segregated back seating area only”. A couple of other fellow gaijin travellers also didn’t get the memo, and the shorter of the two ended up being pretty pissed off. I feel you. Stuck in the gaijin pen isn’t a good feeling (tbf, there were also four Japanese fans there too).

On top of that, Ran was unable to make it. The members other than Taichi came on stage to make an official apology, complete with several bows, stating that he was sick and could not perform. Oh well, I see them later this trip anyways.

First up is LIZA, a rebranded M4GNET4R, and they were…alright. Most of the bands that I’m not going to be up close for are probably going to receive this rating. Pretty forgettable, no Setlist posted because if the song exists, they played it.

So after them, I get to chatting a bit with two guys in the gaijin pen. They were both at Lyrica yesterday, but we didn’t get to talk properly. We basically just talked about the misunderstanding. The taller of the two said that he was aware that Bloom has done this before, but that he doesn’t mind because he can see above everyone anyways. He feels awkward attending shows where he isn’t standing at the back, just because he doesn’t like blocking people.

Pretty soon, it’s time for Orseas, who a couple of years ago rebranded from their original name, GrimAqua. They have Yakuza costumes, their vocalist being wheeled out, talking like an old school gangster before getting on a fake bicycle. The other members come out, playing into the skit. One of the guitarists has a watermelon shaped beach ball that he lobs into the crowd as they start singing a song…about a watermelon.

Their set is, again, pretty decent. Can’t complain. I decide to watch it by leaning over the edge of the gaijin pen, so I can at least see half the stage. They close it off by completing the skit, staging a shootout between multiple members, leading the drummer to gloat about his victory as the curtain closes…only to come out to one final song.

One of my gaijin pen mates goes over to check on his friend and a large gap has opened from people vacating the pen to go check out merch. Personally, I’d like to actually use these utensils that I bought yesterday instead of having them go to waste.

The Gallo has different costumes today. Looking more like 1920s American gangsters, maybe they co-ordinated with Orseas, maybe they just both showed up that way.

Same opener as yesterday, but entirely different the rest of the set. Still absolutely had to have a song with The Wave, though. That’s kind of their thing. He tells us to put away our plates and spoons after the second song and shows us the furi moves he wants us to make for 2013’s Omocha.

Hand in front of face, box motion in front of face, point at audience. What are you make boxes for, JoJo? Are you Jigsaw? Just because some of their fans are there too, doesn’t mean you have to be them. Silly Jojo.

Either way, fun times.

I wonder how my plate is faring…

My God…

After two songs of use? Gallo fans must have to buy new plates all the time.

So after a bit more chatting with the others, I decide to head out without buying anything. I could really go for some Yakiniku. Liza passes me a flyer and thanks me for coming.

Thanks, this flyer will protect me from the rain.

After dinner, the lady at the cashier counter gives me a “日本語上手” and offers me a free umbrella because of how hard it’s coming down now. I’m walking to the Oedo line, when I hear a “hey!”. I turn around, and it’s Brandon!

He just got back from the Hizaki acoustic live, and was heading to a sit down event. Too bad, I gotta bounce. But I thank him for being a concert mate for a few shows. He goes back to Seattle after today, so I wish him a safe travel back.

Checking Twitter to see if any info has been posted about the show, what do I see on Bloom’s twitter profile?

An ad for Fucker Christmas.

Merry “The Last Scene Pt 2 tour” Retro Rock 11/01 @ Esaka Muse

I’m off on the road today. Overnight bag packed, off to Osaka first. Due to availability, I decide to splurge on a Green Car seat. Perks were snack/drink delivery to your seat, a dedicated wi/fi, more leg room with a leg rest and an outlet on your seat for charging devices.

I’ve never been to the Esaka neighbourhood before. Esaka Muse is located just above a Don Quixote, but there is unfortunately no elevator access so it’s up the stairs.

Tickets are called. I missed the window to get C tickets, but it’s not so bad. Just under 60 A tickets, one B ticket holder and only 10 C ticket holders get in before they start calling for D. And by then, half of the D tickets before me are no shows.

So I take a spot in the fourth row in between Gara and Tetsu’s normal spots. Someone takes the spot right beside me. But after a minute or so, decides to move. Nobody else seems to take the spot.

Hmmm, wonder why.

I’ll mention the concept of a “gaijin seat”. It’s a phenomenon that a lot of people have experienced where people tend to avoid sitting directly next to them in public transit. I can’t say I’ve explicitly experienced this, as someone will inevitably take the spots beside me if there’s enough people on the train who want seats. But I have noticed on a few occasions that some people will quickly switch seats as soon as another one becomes open.

This is kind of a concert equivalent of “the gaijin seat”, “the gaijin spot”, if you will. I’ve had cases where people might have given a slightly wider berth in the past, but it’s rare that nobody decides to take a fourth row spot, just because I’m standing next to it.

Anywho

Merry head out on stage, and start off with M.E.R.R.Y.’s Utagoe Kissa Modern, followed with Meisai no Shinshi from nu chemical rhetoric. They continue on with some older tracks, and I was like “did I study up on the new album for nothing?”

Guess this is what they meant by “Retro Rock”, but I can’t complain. It was only about six songs in that they performed one of the new singles, 欲望の残骸ゴミ箱で眠れ, followed by Peep Show’s Sayonara Ame.

Of course, there’s plenty of furi, audience chanting, and Gara egging us on to go crazy. Towards the end of the set, we got Gendai Stoic’s Hi no Ataranai Basho and the main set ended with Kubitsuri Rondo. Nu chemical rhetoric and M.E.R.R.Y. clearly making up the bulk of the setlist.

Encore call starts, and they come out after five minutes and talk for a bit before starting the encore with the second new single, Mahoroba. Followed by Underworld’s Gekisei.

They throw out some picks and a drumstick to the crowd, before heading off one more time.

But, the audience felt like one of their retro albums didn’t have anything played from it. Lack of Modern Garde. So it’s off to cheering for another encore.

They come on one last time, with Nero having to go check in the back for Gara before bringing him out for one last song, Japanese Modernist. For this one, Gara has us rushing the front, ramming repeatedly into the Saizen, reaching out to the members. I get kneed in the back of my leg, good times.

Feeling sore, I decide to go grab some merch before I take off, picking up some box sets of the two new singles for lovely board members.

*Setlist posted from a Japanese fan from memory, although they admit there may be a few mistakes in song order. They did miss Hi no Ataranai Basho, for example.

The Madna “Gig Tour 2025 Freaks Hyper Rush” 11/02 @ Live House OP’s (Fukuoka)

Leaving my Osaka hotel right at 10 am, getting to Fukuoka isn’t nearly as much of a clusterfuck as it was getting to Shin-Osaka, for obvious reasons.

The first thing that I noticed, is that we’re back to riding/passing escalators on the Tokyo side, and not the Osaka side.

The next thing I noticed is that city busses have you scan in, and then out instead of the usual Tokyo routes I take that are a flat 210 per route at the beginning of your ride.

I wish I could have more time to explore, but the timing of today’s activities means that I need to go straight to the venue to make it for the 1:00-2:15 pm window for buying their latest album to get a 2shot with one of the members.

I decide to opt for the limited edition, as it comes with a physical cheki and signature. The other gya here are making themselves up to look as pretty as possible, but I’m just trying to not look like a total goblin after all this travel.

I eventually settle on Tomo’s line. I chat a bit with a (German?) fan who also hasn’t met The Madna before, and has four physical cheki tickets. She’s wondering if she’ll just be told to go to the back of the line after her first ticket, and it looks like she will.

So my turn comes up, and I can see why so many girls keep coming back for Madna 2shots. Tomo is a genuinely nice guy, asking questions that a lot of other band guys wouldn’t. “Oh, you’re from Canada? English, right? Where do you live now? Oh, still Canada? You like Japan then, right? Is VK well liked in Canada? Oh, not really? We need more promotion, then!”

So feeling like I really need a recharge (both of my phone, and myself), I head for the hotel, a Guest House in the Gion neighbourhood.

A little awkward having to share a room with three others, but there is a privacy curtain, and above all else, a private outlet.

Once I have a sufficient charge, it’s back to OP’s for the actual show.

B7 today, mainly because this was kind of a whim buy and not something I had planned well in advance. Making me one of the last people in the venue. Still, I manage to get a fifth row spot right in front of Takashi. Mind you, we only have space for six rows. It’s not a particularly big place. But then again, I have no idea how big the Fukuoka VK market is.

Smoke starts wafting from the curtains. Are you guys vaping back there?

Nope, just incense. The guys come out. Rio in his expected skeleton jacket, Tomo in a big fluffy jacket, Takashi in a jean jacket, and Ryota looking like an albino Wednesday Addams.

Starting off with new tracks, Gekihaku (which doesn’t seem to have dedicated furi yet) and Blaze before heading into Ugly Heaven’s Ugome, the energy is there from the start.

Playing a series of songs off the new album mixed in with single b-sides from the last couple years, the crowd rushed forward for one song before Takashi offers his guitar forward for me to touch it.

They pause for a bit to slow things down for Strawberry Drop and Pendulum.

Finishing off with a few of the bigger songs from the newer album, Ryota popping a blood capsule on his face for Hysterical, they head off after declaring “last song!” for Sadistic Trepanation.

But of course, that puts their performance time at only about 55 minutes. Barely better than last time. Encore call starts immediately…and they close the curtains. Come on now, not a repeat of last time.

But the audience is persistent. After over five minutes of calling, the curtain opens back up and they head back on. The only difference being that Tomo has ditched his big, furry coat.

They talk a bit, mainly Ryota. He talked about wanting to try a Fukuoka specialty food. But said that being on the road so much, it was usually conbini food for them. But he did tell us about a brand of pre-mixed hi-ball that the conbini’s sell that he likes.

Anyway, encore time.

Starting off with Electrip’s Grotesque, Ryota leading us in the furi. A couple songs later, we go into the real closer of the night, Emily. They decide to stretch it out as long as possible by looping the same part of the song over 15 times, getting the crowd to rush the Saizen multiple times. Both Ryota and Takashi grab my hand, and I finally get to touch Takashi’s guitar before it’s time to head back. Alternating between bows and rushes, they finally wrap up the song with the audience running back and forth from side to side.

After finally leaving the stage, I’m #2 in line for merch. I get 4 cheki, and a Gacha chance, which gets me two Madna pens.

I pull, and get 3 Ryota’s (one signed) and one Takashi. So I can trade my two unsigned Ryota for a Tomo and Rio.

Or, as it turns out. 2 gya just offered me straight yen trades. So…I have a signed Tomo 2shot already, and what I really wanted was an albino Wednesday Addams to show everyone.

So you know what, I’ll take that 2000 yen, thank you. Never know when I might need it.

A break?

The morning after The Madna show, and I decide to get up bright and early and just do my report on the train instead of laying down.

Why? Because I’m heading to a Fukuoka must-see this morning, before I head to my next city. It’s about 45 minutes out, but there’s a local train that goes straight to the town.

Welcome to Nanzo-in Temple

The way there is a beautiful view of forested mountains, with the train path just kind of carved out, while still blending in with the scenery.

Walking through the town on the way up

Entering, the fee for non-residents is 300¥, no big deal. They do have a list of rules that I feel was probably expanded in recent years.

Basically, no influencers looking for a viral moment with the reclining Buddha.

“Draw me like one of your French girls”

So this guy here is 11 m high, by 41 m long, making it the largest bronze reclining Buddha in the world.

The temple does provide access to the statue’s feet, which have patterned bottoms that people can place coins on.

There’s also a bean bag toss game…and ice cream and coffee sales right across from the Buddha.

So an entirely solemn, sacred place this is not. But in terms of visuals, I’d still highly recommend this temple to anyone.

After briefly going up the hill some more for the Shinto portion of the area, I head back down, able to do the entire run in less than an hour.

So I have a while to chill until my train. Time to try Cinnabon for the first time

Bun-zuh

A quicker trip this time, off to Kagoshima, one of the most southern cities in Kyushu. I pull up into my hotel by 1:45, but that gives me a few hours to go do something else.

There’s always the port area. So I plug the directions into Google Maps, and they say it’s just a simple bus ride.

Let’s head there…

Nevermind. Guess it’s a taxi.

So I’ve got two choices here. Aquarium, or Volcano.

An aquarium is nice and all, but I’ve seen them before.

Time to board the ferry for Sakurajima.

An active volcano that overlooks the city of Kagoshima, separated by the bay.

There are a few things to do here, like fishing, hiking, onsen, etc. Personally, I don’t have a toooon of time, so the best option for me is to take the Island View Bus, that takes us on a 45 minute loop around the island with a 10 minute break at the top for a photo op with the farthest up point that the public is allowed to go.

I narrowly catch the 4:00 pm ferry back to mainland, and hail a taxi to get…back to my hotel?

You know me better than that…

lynch. XX anniversary tour act 9 “The Avoided Shadows”, 11/03 @ Caparvo Hall (Kagoshima)

I wouldn’t come all this way if there wasn’t a good show to see. Another example of “me coming back to attend tours that were announced during my last visit”, Lynch’s 20th anniversary tour has reached the stage of playing most of their oldest material (which was released on Spotify re-recorded for this occasion).

Getting there 10 minutes after doors, it seems like everyone is already in. It’s not super packed in the room though, a bit smaller than BigCat. About as big as Esaka Muse. Like other lynch shows I’ve been to, more men than the usual VK crowd. Damn near close to 50/50.

The band comes out, and people are still enthusiastically member calling. Starting with Last Nite to see the atmosphere, he beckons people forward. I get repositioned to row eight, in front of Akinori. People pumping their fists/outstretched hands to the vocal parts, headbanging intermittently.

He calls us forward again for The Universe, and I manage to get smushed forward to row six dead centre, Hazuki egging us on to ram the Saizen some more during the choruses.

The excitement continues building, the audience chanting along with choruses. During Roaring in the Dark’s, it has that questionable arm pose again. I get that it’s an old song, but do you really have to do it too, Hazuki?

I could get into whether it’s “as bad” as one that has a full extension from the chest like the guy from Matsutake Works, but at this point it would be pointless. Guess I’m waving. Eyeing the other foreign fan at this show, and she has the same “that’s awkward” expression. Oh well. They did let Yusuke, Akinori and Reo have some platform time during these few songs.

They start playing some lighter/slower songs off Shadows/The Avoided Sun, to gradually start getting us pumped up again with The Ambivalent Ideal and Evilly.

The energy continued until the end of the set, playing about 90 minutes.

The encore call starts, and Reo’s acoustic guitar comes out. After a bit more cheering, they take their places for I Don’t know where I am. Afterwards, there’s another occasion…it’s Reo’s 51st birthday! They pull out his cake and sing happy birthday before they chat a bit. They rock paper scissors for who gets to speak to the Hiroshima crowd next show. Reo talks about how it’s hard to earn a living by touring now, but they make do.

After three more, ending with Dazzle, they take their leave one more time.

But no, I think fans are anticipating one more song. A second encore call goes up, and they don’t keep us waiting that long. Hazuki announces their last song, Bringer.

*while this is the official setlist for Fukuoka, based on the order of the songs and the key parts of the set that match perfectly, I think it’s fair to say that this is also representative of what Kagoshima got.

I stumble back to my hotel, my feet killing me again. I’ve got an eaaaarly day tomorrow.

We’re at the halfway point!

The pictures from the temple look like straight out of an anime or video game :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Loved it.
And the cinnabon looks delicious :face_savoring_food:

Also: lyyyyynch. I was hoping you’re going to one of their concerts again. Hopefully there will be the day they’ll announce a tour in Europe :smiling_face_with_tear: (and when I say Europe, I mean Germany. And when I say Germany, I mean Hamburg. Pretty please :grimacing:)

damn, are their ticket sales that bad??? A quick check shows that Esaka Muse can hold 450 people, a huge drop from them able to sell out Liquid room easily in the days of “underworld“.

And ya, looking at the setlist, a tour with the new album in the title should have at least 50% of the setlist centered round it, even with the retro-rock subtitle. Maybe the band knows they need old songs to sell tickets? I used to be a major fan of MERRY but fell off since “BEAUTIFUL FREAKS“ so I kinda get how casual fans might look at their tour and decide whether to attend or not if its in their vicinity.

There were definitely quite a few D ticket holders after me, so I’m thinking this may have been a lot of people who casually follow them who only heard that they were coming via Eplus (C and D tickets), and even then, only made the choice to buy a ticket well after they had gone on sale.

Nul/Jiluka “Aiming” 11/04 @ Ikebukuro Edge

So my first return to the Edge this trip, when looking at last year’s reports it was Edge, Edge, Edge

Catherine flashbacks

A82 today, enough for a solid fourth row spot in front of Sena. This is the closest I’ve been in a while, ever since I saw them for the first time a couple years ago as the opening Taiban act at Rame from Vidoll’s birthday live.

This live can be directly compared to last year’s Aiming, featuring them and another D’espairsRay adjacent band, LuV Parade.

In both cases, Jiluka are the starting band. I’d be curious to see how dynamics have shifted since then.

I pick up a full band acrylic of Nul prior to settling in my spot for the show to start.

They come out to their typical intro, an AI voice track introducing each member. All members seem to be getting equal enthusiasm.

Starting with mainstays Blvck and Venom, the energy is already much higher than last year’s show w/ LuV Parade. Just by glancing around, more people further back in the venue are getting into the furi and headbanging, and even most of the Nul fans in the first few rows are at least fist pumping (now, if only the lady in front of me would bow.).

Sena gets a centre platform solo during Twisted Pain, then Ricko announces the next song, Fuckin’ BaLa-deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-da.

The set continues, high energy throughout. Sena getting another platform solo, Boogie heading out our way a couple times. Ricko pumping us up with call and response cheers. Sena seems to have taken up a pantomime smoking habit, maybe he thinks it makes him look sexy. Don’t think he needs much help with that.

Ricko declared what I thought was “last song”, before going into Lethal Affliction, but I was surprised when that finished off and they start up Last Faith. Maybe that is “last song”? Nope, it’s Butt fucking shot. Seems like you can never really trust Ricko’s “last songs”.

So it seems like Jiluka got a little bit more time this time around. Merch sales are on and I pull six cheki. Got 3 Ricko (2 signed), 2 Boogie, 1 Sena. I manage to trade my Boogie for one more Sena. But I did want a Zyean to balance it out, although I do normally get a decent number of him.

Moving on up one space for Nul, I notice right away by looking around that a decent number of people have cleared out this time. I’d say that last year was already more packed at the beginning, but now there are only neat rows on the main floor left, some spots not even filled. Wonder what the energy will be like.

The band comes out, Programmer Toshiyuki Kishi, who has worked with The Alfee and Abingdon Boy’s School before, guitarist Masato of Transtic Nerve/defspiral, and vocalist Hizumi of D’espairsRay. A support bassist and drummer join them (and no, despite him working with them before, the support bassist wasn’t Kohta from Pierrot/Angelo.

Starting off slower, I began to worry that it wouldn’t reach the same level of excitement that Jiluka brought. The reaction to the rest of the set put that to rest.

The set barely let up at all. He remarks on how hot it is, before leading us in more call and response, fist pumping, head banging. You’d think these were D’espairsRay songs with how the crowd were reacting but no, all original Nul songs.

The audience calls for an encore, and the guys come out for one last song, Hybrid Beast, before they head out for good. Masato flicks a guitar pick in my direction, but a lady behind me picks it up first.

Let’s hope that Cross Road Fest can bring crowds like this for the D’espairsRay reunion despite all the negative news about it.

Seeing that picture of you and Tomo two days ago, my first thought was that he looks familiar but couldn’t figure out who he reminds me of.

Now I remembered
