This time, JROCKONE had a chance to talk with Metalcore Band EVILGLOOM about their album release last year, their latest single “Blue Nausea” and took a look at the past and the future with the band.
- Could you please introduce yourself for anyone who is not familiar with EVILGLOOM? Who is responsible for what inside the band?
Members of Evilgloom are as follows (from left to right):
YuU (Gt.), Justy (Ba.) tsy (Dr.), $ANA€-mon (Sup.-Gt./Vo.), Demi (Vo.)Demi writes the lyrics.
YuU writes lyrics and music.
YuU is also in charge of music production and $ANA€-mon is in charge of artwork design.
- How did you all get into playing music, what inspired you to be in a band and how did the band EVILGLOOM form?
YuU, $ANA€-mon and Justy are the initial members of the current group.
After the first vocalist (up to the first EP “Piu”) decided to leave the band, the remaining members asked Demi to join.
As for Tsy, he joined the band as a live support member while the regular drummer was out of the band.
- You released your first album “Addictions” last year. How was it to release the first album? Can you tell us something about it?
I was happy to hear the response to the release of the full album last year, both in Japan and abroad.
It was also our first full-length album, and we felt that we had finally reached a point of passage as a band.
- Your album was featured on two official Spotify playlists. Streaming services are often a hot discussed topic, so how do you as a band feel about streaming services?
In the early days of the band, we didn’t focus much on streaming services, but since the single that preceded the album, we have been promoting the album with streaming services in mind, and I think it is an important part of the band’s activities.
- You didn’t take any rest after releasing your album and released in December last year a new song “Blue Nausea”. It includes a lot of electronic elements, can you tell you something about the song?
This song is a more electronic version of the album’s 6th track, INTERLVDE, which also has a band sound.
It’s a challenging song that incorporates elements of Drift Phonk, Psy Trance, and others.
- How does your writing process look like? Do you take inspiration from anywhere?
All of the music is completed on YuU’s laptop. We are mostly influenced by bass music, etc.
- What music do you listen to in private? Are there any bands you look up to or take inspiration from? And please recommend us any music you like.
Each member listens to a wide range of music, and outside of metalcore and post-hardcore, they also listen to JRAP, KPOP, JPOP, etc.
XG’s NEW DNA, which was released last year, was often listened to by the members.
- You’ve been playing shows last year with foreign bands and have 2 upcoming lives in February with ten56.
Is it different sharing the stage with foreign bands? Have you ever learned anything from it or you teached them anything?
Basically, we were often invited to tour with bands whose careers were longer than ours, so last year we were trying to see how much we could compete on our own.
We will be performing at two venues on ten56.'s Japan tour at the end of February, but since it has been arranged as a package tour, we hope to leave our mark on the tour and make it a good one.
- Do any of the band members have any unique talents that would surprise fans?
As some of you who come to our concerts may know, $ANA€-mon is a fruit farmer, so we sometimes serve fruits at our events!
- What are your current thoughts on the Japanese Metalcore scene? And because the whole interview is in English, is there anything you would like foreigners to know about it?
The Japanese metalcore scene seems to be getting even more exciting in the future, as more and more artists have recently signed contracts with overseas labels.
We also hope to tour overseas in the near future to respond to our fans who support us from overseas.
- Tell us something about EVILGLOOM’s future plans.
We cannot announce details yet, but we plan to release something early in 2024.
There are also plans to undergo a major reformation as a band at that time.
- Please leave a message for your fans, the readers and hopefully future fans.
Thank you all for your support of Evilgloom!
We are planning to release even more amazing music and live shows that will exceed everyone’s imagination, so please look forward to it!
Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity for this interview. We are looking forward to further releases and activities of EVILGLOOM.
