I can’t even see what your original comment said so no worries lmaoo
I got myself confused lol
But he isn’t playing the Lick there. This is the bass phrase:
and this is the Lick:
Also, it’s not a separate intro, it’s part of the remake.
What I love about the Kiri to Mayu remake is that I initially wasn’t catching any similarities to the original at all outside of the one melodic line that Kyo has. But after a few more listens I realized a lot more was there, the riffs were just being repurposed to fit what they were doing at the time.
I do wish that Kyo didn’t resort to harsh vocals for 99% of the track. I also think Shinya’s aggressively sample replaced and quantized-to-shit drumming is a huge sore spot (why the break for the big drum fill when he can’t replicate it properly live?) but the overall arrangement is pretty great to me.
It isn’t exactly the same rhythm (he’s holding some of those notes out longer), and it’s transposed to the key of the song, and I think there may be one extra note in there. But idk, to my ears, he’s definitely quoting the Lick in some fashion here
You’re right though it’s also on the studio recording from Unraveling - I almost never listen to the EP, if I want to hear those remakes I listen to the lives haha so I totally forgot it’s also in the studio track. I think he also omits it in the Tabula Rasa performance, so I sort of just associate it with the DSS Budokan live
Nope, on re-listen he DOES do it on the Tabula Rasa DVD, it’s just pushed later. He does the MAIN verse part solo, then that quote, THEN the song starts proper!!
Gaika, Chinmoku…
Shitataru Morou

Kind of a weird thread for me personally. I dont get why its needed to spread negativity and discuss things you dont like. just a hot take from me, I guess.
Because there’s no good without the bad. If we, as music enthusiasts, are not able to see (and name) things for what they are and have to pretend to unequivocally like something just for the sake of there being no “negativity”, it would result in nothing but an echo chamber / circlejerk.
And this applies to all sorts of things in life, because acting as if the “bad” doesn’t exist in something “good” doesn’t magically make the “bad” nonexistent. It just makes it harder to deal with.
That said, Sustain the untruth and Utafumi are the worst contenders for me. The former is overplayed and the latter just makes me think of Kyo being out of breath during live performances.
Let’s get real: of all bands posted on this website, Dir en grey is arguably the most popular and their threads generate among the largest engagement on the forum. I think the only other band to top DEG threads is X-Japan and Yoshiki hate threads.
I could never really get into Ranshishoku.
I could understand it being a problem if the thread turned toxic, but everyone is being civil about it.
DEG are my favorite band of all time. In other metal circles I often hold up Lotus as a great example of a bassist playing in between the drums and the guitars rather than just mimicking one or the other, or Vinushka as a masterclass in long-form songwriting and tension and release. But even then there’s a few songs I just can’t vibe with, which is greatly informed by my overall taste in music outside of this one band. I like hearing other peoples’ take on this question if they’re being civil (which I think everybody has been so far) because it gives me more insight into the tastes of other fans and what they do and don’t like (and WHY) about Dir en grey
You know what? The thread was never started with the intention of “hating” on the band… In fact was kinda the opposite as was curious about other peoples opinions because let’s be real, almost no band has no songs you wont feel are lackluster in some way and thought itd just be fun to share some of those songs and reasons why. Like its been said already everyone has been cool, its not turned into a hate thread or anything and to be fair, some of the songs people really dislike and their comments about them have been interesting to read as some of those songs i absolutely love personally! There has also been some interesting discussion regarding some of these tracks, like the bottom of the death valley “lick” conversation which was what i suggested in my original post could make this a fun idea. I just think its weird someone has interpreted it as potentially negative tbh when that literally hadnt occurred to me that it could be at all.
Yeah I understand you guys maybe its just me who is weird.
My view on life is if you don’t like something, you ignore it and don’t spend any energy on it. Talking about it or saying that you dislike it to others is just destructive and creates negative energy. Nothing constructive can come out of it.
But I get that you have the right to critize things and all that, maybe its just me who is weird. Sorry of I interrupted peace to you all
I suppose I mostly skip their pre-2000 and pop rock tracks (cough cough 太陽の碧)… and listen to 2012-2020 tracks most of the time.
agree. akatsuki’s demo is better.
It’s interesting to see differing opinions. If discussions don’t have some degree of negativity, they’re simply empty, meaningless echo-chambers. Understanding alternate viewpoints allows us to think outside our own heads, opening us up to new ideas.
For instance, Kamuy has been mentioned at least twice in this thread. For me, this one song is better than everything on the last two albums combined.
And I Taiyou no Ao!
Kamui is great, im totally down with you on that.
No need to apologize I don’t think! And by asking the question, you caused me to think a bit more about WHY I’m able to find value in negative feedback or perceptions, and just thinking about what I find valuable and why is a moment of introspection I think EVERYBODY could use a bit more of these days, myself definitely included
And hey, not everybody finds constructive meaning in critiques like this. If you don’t, that’s totally fine! Neither side of the fence is more or less weird than the other I don’t think - we just care about things in different ways, but that’s not a bad thing
I honestly just find it super interesting hearing everyones massively diverse opinions on certain tracks, albums or whatever. I never think like “wow that person is talking crap because i love that song, they dont know what they’re on about” kinda thing. On the flipside I have seen people say super positive things and tall about tracks they love which arent too special to me. Which is what I think is interesting about this band is that they have a lot of diversity in the sound and are able to appeal to a lot of people with different tastes and here we are discussing it. Thats the way i see it anyway.
