LUNA SEA drummer Shinya (真矢) pauses activity to undergo treatment for brain tumor

Shinya will be unable to play at Lunatic Fest due to treatment of a brain tumour that was recently discovered.

Lunatic Fest will still continue on as planned. Junji of Siam Shade/SiamSophia, and former Luna Sea roadie has been named as the guest drummer for November 8th and 9th.

Shinya is going to focus on his treatment and he’s optimistic that he’ll be able to play for everyone again one day.

Luna Sea’s Shinya announces he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2020 and despite the treatment and 7 surgeries he continued playing live through it all, now he has a brain tumour…

Recent Announcement From Luna Sea In X

To everyone involved with LUNA SEA and our fans:

This is Shinya from LUNA SEA. Thank you always for supporting LUNA SEA. I have something important that I need to report to you.

In 2020, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. During concerts and subsequent tours, I continued performing while undergoing seven surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. I kept going until the grand finale of our 35th-anniversary tour at Tokyo Dome in February 2025, but recently I collapsed due to dizziness and couldn’t stand.

I thought it was an issue with the ear stones, but after seeing a doctor, there was no improvement. An MRI at the neurosurgery department revealed a tumor on the right side of my head, which was diagnosed as a brain tumor.

Going forward, I plan to undergo radiation treatment, but if inflammation occurs, it could make me immobile or affect my ability to perform.

Because of this, at “LUNATIC FEST. 2025” on November 8 and 9, Junji, the person I trust most, will sit at the drum set and perform on my behalf.

I believe this is the best decision for me, for LUNA SEA, and for all the fans who support us.

I sincerely thank Junji for agreeing to help. I also apologize to the fans and LUNA SEA members for any inconvenience and hope that you will continue supporting LUNA SEA.

Until the day I can return to the stage, I promise first to survive and, most importantly, to never lose hope. And when that day comes, let’s meet with smiles.

Ah! At the Tobacco Festival, I plan to participate in the Hatano Sai-bayashi company float in a wheelchair. I’m looking forward to it! We’ll be waiting for you on September 27 and 28 in our hometown, Hatano.

And of course, we’ll also be waiting for you at Luna Fest on November 8 and 9.

Shinya / LUNA SEA

To everyone:

I’m sure that many of you, upon hearing Shinya’s words about his health, must be feeling surprised and full of worry.

But the four of us want, above all, for Shinya to have nothing to worry about and to fully focus on his treatment. He has always been the backbone of LUNA SEA, supporting the band through everything, and now it’s our turn to protect the place where he can always come back.

What we also want to tell our fans is this:

Shinya’s place is always here, with us.

We will continue to wait for his return with faith, never changing.

And in the meantime, we will cherish and protect this band that we have built together with the five of us and all the fans.

We hope you will continue to warmly support LUNA SEA and Shinya during this time.

@suji Good point about the title, but we can phrase it more carefully. I’ve already updated the title, and staying polite helps everyone better understand Shinya’s news.

Having to go through cáncer once is terrible enough, but twice… Feels so bad. I wonder how brain tumors are treated. 20 years ago It was very invasive but reading this It seems there are other efective options.

Sugizo expresses himself on his X account

As we have already shared, ShinyA is currently fighting illness.

It has been five years since he was diagnosed with cancer. Out of a deep desire not to worry our fans, he chose not to make it public and has been quietly battling the disease all this time. Even under those circumstances, he completed recordings, got through long tours, and made it all the way to the Tokyo Dome show; each step carried by the strength of his unwavering will.

However, things have now reached a point where it can no longer be kept hidden. ShinyA himself has made the decision to share this with all of you.

He is in the midst of his fight against cancer and, sadly, has had to withdraw from performing at LUNATIC FEST. Taking his place on drums will be Jun-ji from SIAM SHADE. We hope you’ll understand this difficult decision.

We are truly sorry to cause concern to everyone. And now, we have a heartfelt request.

Up until now, ShinyA has been supported only by his family, LUNA SEA’s members, and a very small circle of staff. But from here on, we ask you—please send your strength and energy to ShinyA. Stand with us.

And above all, please stay positive.

Because ShinyA himself is more positive than anyone.

We will keep protecting ShinyA with all our strength. I will continue to give him my full support with everything I have.

We want to keep walking forward as the five of us in LUNA SEA.

So please—stay with us. Be by our side.

Thank you so much.

ShinyA will come back.

LUNA SEA is eternal.

That’s sooo scary. Brain surgery is intense.

I can’t imagine he would recover before Luna tic fest. Do they have a plan for that?

If they are doing surgery he 99.99999% won’t join fest in any way and even if he could he wouldn’t be able to play.

Junji of Siam Shade is going to be filling in

If he had a previous stage 4 cancer in 2020 and now has a brain tumor, it’s not to be pessimistic, but he has a very complex clinical picture…
