i wish i could articulate better bc i don’t fully know! it certainly isn’t the songwriting, which is always consistent.
i think it sits at a bit of a midpoint between the raw ‘we don’t know what we’re doing but the mixer can clean it up’ of gds/avoided sun and the super locked in ‘this is metalcore vkei’ direction of believe and on.
i want to say the same thing about it that i want to say about naitomea’s world ruler - another album i LOVE but hate the sound of. somehow i want to call them both dry and flat, but idk what that means.
maybe not enough reverb/delay/ambiance? maybe just enough compression to lose dynamics but not enough that it’s tight? somehow the whole album kinda rolls off my ears without any investment, yet i love what’s before and after it.
maybe i could say there’s not enough ‘moments’ in the production where one thing changes to another, each track just kinda rolls forward being a track whereas all the other albums around this time had a lot of differentiation from part to part or cymbal hits or screams or other guiding sounds that shape your attention as you listen.
i guess this is the first album where i thought of lynch as ‘coasting’, even tho what comes after (believe/inferiority) absolutely isn’t. and i think i put the ‘blame’ not on their songwriting but just how interesting the mixing/production seems to find each song, and thereby tell me.
with an exception being Cultic My Execution, that one’s already great from first listen, very solid and knowing what it wants to be.
Totally get what you’re saying about raw and heavy lynch. vs. heavy and heavier lynch.
I remember this being my gripe with them early on. I liked them, but didn’t love them because they were straddling that heavy fencepost… As they got older and went more metal, I found myself missing that raw feeling the earlier few albums had.
I know previous re-recs there was some split opinions about some of the tracks. Overall i think it turned out good i hope they continue the to deliver good stuff with this re-take. This album i know was one of the more popular one so hopefully they do it justice
Personally I doubt it since they already released remasters of everything IBIM-onwards, but for me it’s INFERIORITY COMPLEX with the worst mix so I wouldn’t complain if they redid that one.
I guess I could also post this in the unpopular music opinion section, but:
I discovered lynch. about nine months ago (don’t know why they flew under my radar for so long). Therefore I’m a relatively new fan and started with the newer stuff and live concerts. I remember very well, after listening to the “to the gallows” live version of “PULSE_” quite a lot of time as it is one of my favorites, hearing the studio version for the first time.
Well… let’s say, I like the live version so much better that the CD version sounds like a far inferior cover version to me
So, I’m very happy about the retakes.
