lynch. - GOD ONLY KNOWS

Like people say they have released the same song for 10 years now lol, if this was a western band do you guys think they would have many fans sticking with them? Lynch has been so generic for so long now.

Iā€™m biased since I see lynch. regularly, but I think theyā€™re a pretty live-focused band.
Iā€™ve never felt much with most of their audio tracks (except maybe half of ultima and a bunch of their best ballads) but their live shows are a whole different beast. I think their lives have the best call-and-response in their generation and bracket (in terms of crowd size).

This has always been an interesting perspective to me. I canā€™t ever speak to vkei from a live perspective because I hardly have a chance to see these bands live. Especially in Japan since I ainā€™t ever set foot on the magical island of Nippon.

Iā€™m sure the feeling that songs like ā€œgod only knowsā€ generates is a blast in those settings. But Iā€™ve always been in the boat that a piece of music should be great both at a live and in the studio as well. Afterall, a truly wonderful album has depth, polish, or just plain ass catchiness that survives many seasons and the mediums in which people can access and listen to it.

But I think itā€™s a double edged sword because you might run across songs that sound amazing on the studio version, however, when played live it lacks the same oomph because itā€™s challenging or impossible to replicate the same sound. Iā€™ll give lynch. credit for being consistent for the live fans.

In the end, music production + playing songs lives is not a science, and I think, depending on what a band wants to focus on, you get varying results. Hence, you get different reactions from the fanbase depending on how they experience and interact with the bandā€™s activities.

I definitely agree. This might one of be the things that are preventing them from having more overseas appeal. When I first heard of them online in the no makeup era, I wasnā€™t interested in their sound or their visuals. (I didnā€™t seek out their older work on my own, just passively consumed what I saw on my LJ feed)

I donā€™t think I fully saw their appeal until I saw them live after covid, either.

There are definitely bands that Iā€™ve never seen live but think have 10/10 audio tracks, so I get where youā€™re coming from too.

I didnā€™t mean Lynch specifically (agree about them), I replied about bands changing their sound in general. Sometimes bands do it successfully.

Yes people absolutely still like artists who do the same stuff all over again. Tbh I think itā€™s more safe to keep your fanbase with this approach. Most people want more of what they already like. Thatā€™s why spotify algorithm works so well for casual listeners. Because it gives you more of the same thing you already liked.

The thing is, they arenā€™t just doing ā€œthe same thingā€ all over again, but theyā€™re objectively copying riffs/melodies from old songs. Itā€™s not just a hyperbole, but literally the same song in many cases.
