It’s up
Omg Discord Number is wild . What an interesting album
Idc that these are old songs redone.
I’m crying in my office listening to GREEDY DED SOULS.
Retakes are very well done. Respectful from originals and well produced. A pleasure to listen to. You can heard they may had a lot of fun redoing these and i hope they were like « hey we used to be creative let’s try go back to this sound ! » ^^,
This is very well done!
Really good from someone who hasn’t listened to this album in at least a decade. I fell off of lynch. after D.A.R.K. came out (still my favorite album tied with Shadows).
Well. I’m playing one song then the original and wow this is a lot more timid than the originals for sure. There’s no grittiness but that could be a sign of the times and production quality etc. It’s a very pleasant listen but a lot like MOTHER and STYLE it doesn’t have the soul of the originals and runs into the same issues LUNA SEA had with their re-recording their old stuff.
Facts i listened to this in my office too
i hold the original recording in very high regard (as well as my CD collection! Somehow!) so thinking i could be unbiased is an impossibility.
But i really enjoyed the listen! Much more than i expected! It’s really surreal hearing these so much more moody and at times gloomy songs with modern lynch’s nonstop compression, full-volume-nonstop compression, and crystal clear autotune. I sound maybe like i’m being sarcastic but… i figured this was exactly what would happen, expected to be really bothered by it, and ended up quite enjoying it!
I’ll likely not listen to it ever again tbh, the original’s just TOO GOOD. But i never think of remake albums as replacement attempts, rather studies and experiments that get shared with us to observe.
I extremely hope they found what they’re looking for here in doing this, and return soon with more NEW songs in this style. It’s certainly proven to me that their modern production and darker, more atmospheric music can compliment eachother instead of just disagreeing.
Best moment on the album: that laser-focused vibrato-as-vocal-run all over Mujun to Sora; don’t take me pointing out heavy autotune as a complaint, because this track more so than maybe any shows off Hazuki’s ridiculous skill at hitting notes with those super quick pitch bends like a koto. Really shows off the complexity of the melodies and harmonic movement these old songs were working with - pleaaasssee let them hit this level of depth again
Idk about calling it “worst moment” but Hazuki’s “LETS GO” in rew had me expecting an ad read to subscribe to his gamer twitch
Wow, thanks for this comment! I love it when people say what I am thinking but can’t put into words. I totally agree with you on everything. And greedy dead souls isnt even my favorite, i would go crazy if they did the same for the avoided sun.
Oh and i just miss the « i want you to tell everything that happened, everything you can remember. I can’t… i can’t remember » + drop from Vernie ! I expected this to be cut from retake probably rights issues but I always wondered where was this sample from, if some one know ??!
Same this is my #2 fav of theirs (inferiority complex is #3)
…So since this has been a topic of discussion for a bit, Im bringing it up again.
I CAN HEAR AKINORI
It sounds vaguely familiar, but I don’t know.
But while were at it: Where is that “female voice part” from sleepy flow from? I KNOW I heard it before somewhere else. Or at least something that sounds extremely similar.
My mind kinda goes to a movie soundtrack from the late 90’s/early 2000’s
Their best release so far since… SHADOWS ? I BELIEVE IN ME ?
It comes from https://youtu.be/aQZDbBGBJsM
Ah, yes! Thank you!
I think on the whole this is a great release. Most of the retakes sound tight, and while some of the raw grittiness of the original takes is lost, they’ve managed to update these 20-year-old tracks to fit their modern style and production. It’s a great opportunity for new fans to hear these old songs which are now extremely hard or expensive to get hold of (GDS was easily the most expensive item in my complete lynch. discography). I really like that they threw in the B-side disc as well as there are some bangers there that might be quite obscure to some people.
Personally I’d say that I still prefer the original takes for most of these songs (although that might be biased simply due to listening to them so many times) but that’s not really the point of this release. If you don’t like retakes, just listen to the originals. It’s nice that these classic tracks don’t sound so jarring any more if you stick them in a playlist with more recent releases though.
Bonus trivia: GOD ONLY KNOWS is actually a brushed-up and completed song from the same era as SHADOWS - Hazuki explained in the BTS that they performed it live multiple times but ultimately SHADOWS got the music video treatment and GOK was rejected. Older fans who were in Japan at the time might get a kick out of that.
The only thing I don’t understand: Hazu still has his raw growl from old era that can be heard in the STARZ retake. Why doesn’t he use it more often?
Internet tells me it’s from the 2002 horror movie Darkness, some other artists also sampled this particular part (I actually have the movie on DVD but haven’t watched it recently, so can’t verify it myself).
