MUCC - 1997

after a couple listens I think this one’s a slow grower like shinsekai. it’s already starting to win me over

I must confess, I decided to buy it solely to have a copy of the LuV Together show.

Same here lol
But it’s decent. I wasn’t blown away, but I didn’t have a bad time listening to it either.

This album is a mess😣
Some great ideas but almost all of the songs as a whole are not great.
Guilty man for example starts awesome, ends up being uninspiring and soulless.
Tatsuro sounds almost the same in all of the songs .
My biggest concern with them in the latest years is that they’re not capable of composing a catchy refrain anymore.
Not a single song invites me to a re-listen😭
I was hoping to get a MONSTER of a (more recent)song like Ameria ,Living Dead or EMP but I got disappointed.

The album concept is based on the 90s which is obvious. There’s a track by track interview on natalie.mu about the inspiration/backgrounds. I did a brief summary:

桜 → “90’s mixture rock”, ska influences, live song
蜻蛉と時計→ Nu metal & today’s music
invader → “weird lyrics”
Boys be an Vicious → THE MAD CAPSULE MARKETS, The Prodigy
Guilty Man → 2024, dull 90s sound, “dark hero” theme
B&W→ “Black & white”, Brit rock/The Smiths
October → Mid tempo, fast but chill song, folk
LIP STICK → older demo, 80s/90s, written near Rainbow Bridge Odaiba, C-C-B/BOØWY
Round & Round → Early 90s VK, brit rock influence (Eins:Vier, D’ERLANGER; ZI:KILL hommage), yukihiro approved
△(トライアングル) → 2 yrs old, Prog rock, “The Dark Side of the Moon” (Pink Floyd)/King Crimson/Yes, complicated/colorful
不死鳥 → planned as single, was faster before
空っぽの未来 → they wrote it together, poppy ballad, happy song sad lyrics, connected to the lyrics of 1000 no violin (THE BLUE HEARTS), Producer: Munekiyo Hiroyuki
蒼 → Lyrics about spiritual world, soul of Miya
愛の唄 → BUCK-TICK, beginning of “1997” concept
Daydream Believer → based on the 90s concept/their roots, written right after Ai no uta

I came here to see if anyone else felt the same way, it’s sad so many do… and I agree with what you said here the most, because literally it is so messy, the songs kinda blend together and none of them invite a re-listen… I was so hyped for it… :frowning:

First listening: the album is super cohesive which I like, the band explores new sound and I think I really like the concept overall!

Thanks for posting the interview. I encourage everyone to google translate it, it’s super insightful!

I also have to agree with you guys. Damn… the album feels messy.

Sakura - a “catchy” song but it feels we have heard that chorus from Mucc about a million times by now.
Tonbo to tokei - what the heck is even this song? What was that chorus? Filler.
Invader - a “catchy” song but it feels we have heard that chorus from Mucc about a million times by now.
Boys be an Vicious - A bit boring. Generic filler… sorry.
Guilty Man Hmm if you are used to Mucc this is another really generic song that they for sure wont play at lives. Filler. Many songs left, quantity over quality..??
B&W What are they doing?
October I always thought this song starts out really good but when they hit the chorus it becomes so boring and generic mucc.
LIP STICK WHERE ARE THE BANGERS???
Round & Round What the f is even this terrible filler song?
△(トライアングル) Is this whole album a serious effort or just some random demos they had lying around and made into full lenght songs?

I think im giving up here for now. It made me sleepy… Tell me if it is worth to finish it  (Also I am a Mucc fan, I listen to them every day and have been to so many of their concerts) but this album might be their worst work to date… not gonna lie.

I have to agree..all of the old b-sides from MUCCs older singles are stronger than the songs on this new “album” :sob:
The last good albums AS A WHOLE have been Kowareta Piano to living dead and Myakuhaku(with 1-2 exceptions)
Aku had some strong songs like Ameria, Justice and maybe Kurage but as a whole it had too many bland songs.
They should pause for a couple of years and come back with a strong 10/11 songs album which has catchy refrains, memorable guitar solos, drama and gut wrenching emotions from Tatsuro, killer base lines and especially heart and a soul.
It doesn’t have to be a heavy album.
Houyoku is one of their best albums imo.
But I do like their older heavier and grittier stuff more if you ask me.

In a recent interview they said, they will play the full album on the upcoming tour.

How is LIPSTICK not a banger?

I’m not sure if you understood the meaning of the word “filler”

Lipstick is quite catchy and reminds me of the radio songs from The Weeknd(blindings lights etc) but as the songs goes on it’s just too repetitive and just okay imo

After one listen, despite what they say I feel LIP STICK sounds more Buck-Tickish (at least the first half) than 愛の唄

01.Daydream - not a song
02.桜 - Mid
03.蜻蛉と時計 - BANGER
04.invader(2025 Remaster) - BANGER
05.Boys be an Vicious - BANGER
06.Guilty Man - Cool but wierd
07.B&W - Groovy but wierd
08.October(2025 Remaster) - Boring
09.LIP STICK - “Mom, can we get Buck-Tick’s Razzle Dazzle?” “No, we have Buck-Tick’s Razzle Dazzle at home” (endearing; Banger)
10.Round & Round - Cool
11.△(トライアングル)- Groovy but wierd
12.不死鳥 - BANGER
13.空っぽの未来 - meh
14.蒼 - it does not work, quite messy, cool guitar solo tho
15.愛の唄(2025 Remaster)- BANGER BANGER BANGER
16.Daydream Believer - okay-to-good-ish song

Enjoyed this album quite a lot, was not expecting that.

I really liked almost all the singles from recent years, but so far I’ve only liked a few songs from this album.

I never really got into MUCC. But I was courious what a band would do with this concept and to my surprise I enjoyed it a lot. Especially songs 7 to 12. Can’t really say why. Just vibed with me somehow.

Stealing @foccius format

01.Daydream - liked it as it started it had some linkin park intro qualities to it, but the las third was just too trashy for me 4/10
02.桜 - Upon first listen it didn’t do too much for me, but i find it pleasing it could grow on me, but it’s hardly memorable. 6/10
03.蜻蛉と時計 - kinda funny with the rapping and the disturbed reference, but I find it tries too hard to be edgy. I find the chorus deflating compared to the rest. 6.5/10
04.invader(2025 Remaster) - Not a huge fan, but isn’t a bad song. Issue is, for this kind of song MUCC has offered better stuff in the past so it felt a bit pointless to me. The chorus is strong and the solo is solid 7/10
05.Boys be an Vicious - Reminds me of Petit Brabancon in some parts and to Penicillin avex era in others. I like how it flows! 7/10
06.Guilty Man - The most self referncial track in the album, but it still tries some more out there stuff. I appreciate that. 7/10
07.B&W - This is my jam, but I really wished for a stronger chorus since the song seems to build up but never truely delivers imo. 7.5
08.October(2025 Remaster) - Someone in other thread pointed out this song sounds like mando pop and ruined for me, wich is saying a lot since I didn’t even liked it in the first place 2/10
09.LIP STICK - I don’t see the references they cited here, but it indeed feels like a lot of BUCK-TICK went in here. It didn’t do it for me and I actively disliked how the tone of the song chages. Messy. 3/10
10. Round and Round - I was excited o hear this but it did nothing to me. I don’t get it. 2/10
11.△(トライアングル)- Takes a long ass time get going, takes too many detours, gets nowhere. Its interesting but its not my style. 4/10
12.不死鳥 - Solid, all around, I like it. The chorus isn’t too great but the solo is very nice and mood is good. 7/10
13.空っぽの未来 - It didn’t start very promising but it gets better and it feels well made and entretaining throughout but you know what you’re getting 7.5/10
14.蒼 - It’s not uninteresting but it felt a bit dry to me. Not into it until it explodes during the last minute… but that’s too long and isn’t doing much 5/10
15.愛の唄(2025 Remaster)- It was a good single and it’s a good song here too, but it’s sad no other song in this album is as good. 8/10
16.Daydream Believer - It wasn’t too impressive when it was revealed prior to the album release… but I only listened to it once and the chorus stuck with me ever since. That’s something no other wong introduced in this album did to me. Overall, its a solid song and, in the end, it proved to me it was the best choice as a lead for the album… but not because of its virtues but because the other songs are overall solid but forgeteable. 7.5/10

Overall, I rate this album 6/10. It’s not a disaster, it’s well produced and 2 or 3 songs are likeable, but that’s not enough for a historied band like this in a 15 track album. I get the sense that the theme of the album weights too much on them and muddies the whole thing way too much. I think Aku reached higher highs than this and lower lows this just floats around in the mid zone almost constantly… that means that I am much less likely to to come back and listen to stuff on it than this despite this maybe being better overall? That kinda is the worst fate posible for ths album. Shinsekai compares much favorably to both I think, despite not being even close to the best MUCC albums.

I think MUCC had to find something to reinvigorate their creative output and they found 80s/90s music to be that element that was able to drive them again. I think the proof of concept was super good as they tip their toes with 99 and Siren and that drove them to move forward with it as Ai no Uta was also a solid song. But the actual songwriting suffered because the focus seemed to me more on the theme and the style. I think I enjoyed more songs here that are closer to the previous MUCC style than the bespoke 1997 style.

Also, the order songs seems to be composed suggest to me they ran out juice as they developed the theme: 99 (great) → Siren (great) → [theme shifts into 1997] → Ai no uta/Violet (very good) → Daydream Believer (good) → Invader (good), October (not good) → bulk of 1997 (not as good as Invader most of the time imo and with no significant imprint on the listener).

Overall I think they overextended themselves with this direction.

For me after giving it a few listens 不死鳥 is the best song on the album, very melodic and catchy. The other new songs do not impress me, sadly. For me, again, this album feels very messy and just thrown together. I know Mucc has been touring like heck the last year/6 months or so and its during this period they recorded this album, thats why I believe it ends up feeling, again, a bit messy and not refined enough. This is of course just my personal opinion.

Would be fun to hear more opinions! Heyt above posted a great review!

Yup. I also love 不死鳥 the most. And the singles. Sakura, Kagerou to tokei, LIP STICK and maybe a few others are okay-ish.

I actually think the “mixtape feeling” is more because it’s a concept album. In the interviews they pretty much say “We made song X with the vibe of song Y by band Z in mind”. And that’s how it feels: A tribute album to multiple bands with multiple themes.
And that’s exactly how I view it. I hope their next album will be more “original” again.

Yeah then we are two! 不死鳥 is really a nice song!

Also for example: Invader, Sakura and Daydreamer all kind of have the same chorus. Once you notice it you cant stop thinking about it…

Invader and Daydreamer are even title tracks for the album. This is one thing for me that kind of shows that they didn’t think through this album well enough.

And OK, Lip Stick is fine but its not a grower, once you have heard the chorus and the buck tick tribute instrumentals, you feel kind of done with the song. Not really one to have on repeat.
