And the usual complaints begin.
While it’s not even a surprise that they’re starting out with a song as a single that reaches out to a larger range of people. Yeah, most of these songs are more boring than others. But being outstanding is not what these songs usually are about.
(I’ve been having these thoughts so often in the past, when it came to MUCC but also lots of other bands. I’m not sure what to expect. But thinking back of T.R.E.N.D.Y, I really love that release a lot because it reminded me of the music they were making when I got into them. Since this one had 1997 - in its title and this new one is just named 1997 it might be more of their sound before. I’ll wait for the album to be out to judge instead of already doing so by just one song (that I can’t even listen to full-length now but that’s alright, the preview was okay and a bit of what I expected, if I did at all.)
Not out to just complain… I have to be one of the biggest Mucc fans on this site (not really trying to “boast”, and who really cares…). But I have probably been to probably like 35 shows (and counting) at the point. Been for many years in Japan now and when they tour I try to go as much as possible, as I love them. I just expected a bit more for a title track of a new album, they normally have stronger songs for title tracks. I am surprised I’m alone to think like this.
A dissapointed old Mucc fan complaints about a new release? Never happened ever before in the internet thats for sure.
Timeless did had weak title track that was the leading track during the promo run, despite anything else in that cd being better by far.
Daydream believer is also better than that song but its the scond time in a row that It feels to me that Tatsurou’s solo project is “transposed” into Mucc and used as a leading track for an album. Where getting into this pattern of singles being very promisimg but introducing albums with songs that are enjoyable but also very very safe.
Knowing the singles in this are alreasy better than this song Im looking forward to the rest of It, since optimistically they should be more representative of the album than a mellow closing track like this.
But it is pretty common to release something rather mediocre like this to reach out to a wider target audience so they even start listening.
That’s why I’m surprised each time that people put high hopes into these certain songs. Yeah, some of them might have been outstanding or great (aside from people seem to forget that part of categorizing songs like this is personal taste, so just because someone might find it boring or mediocre or whatever, someone else might see it differently) and some might not.
And I wouldn’t have said that, if I hadn’t witnessed that for years over years about lots of bands. So that has neither anything to do with one certain band nor being a long-time very much invested fan but goes beyond this. Otherwise that were only limited to one band and not repeat with others as well, over and over again.
Aside from this I don’t understand the expectations thing anyway. Especially not with a band like MUCC. They were the first band I listened to, my first love in that scene. After getting into them with Kuchiki no tou and Houyoku I also loved 6 and Gokusai. Then there was Shion and after that … I forgot the title because I didn’t like the release at all.
When Karma was released in 2010 many people complained again, I however loved that album, even though that surprised me, too.
To shorten this, it went on like this. Some releases were really great in my opinion while I couldn’t get into others at all. Especially with that history, expectations are the last thing I come up with for any new MUCC release. I listen to it when it’s out and if I like it, great. If not, well, another one I don’t listen to. Would have been great otherwise.
And with that huge catalogue, it’s not even tragic. There’re enough other great songs to listen to.
I have the problem with them lately that from each album there are songs that I like a lot or that I don’t like at all.
This started with “Aku”, and continued with “Shin sekai” and the mini album that followed. Then with Timeless I had a glimmer of light, although it was half a retake…
I doubt that this album will end up convincing me, maybe later they will surprise us with a kowareta piano II or something like that, or a remake album like the ones from 2017.
I understand that they want to reach more audiences, although I think that they are already in a stage where rather than growing in fans, they should maintain the fans they already have.
As for the simultaneous releases, I suppose we are combining it a bit with Tatsuro’s solo career (which I don’t see as very solid work either…)
