I bet it’s hard to talk about things like this publicly.
But i’m probably safe to say: i wish labels would go further out of their way to keep things online even after they’re non-financially-viable. The number of times i’d much rather pay $1 or $5 for some 2000s release rather than forget its existence completely is likely high enough to sustain a bandcamp page’s maintenance, if not a dedicated server!
That’s why i get excited when old bands pop their stuff up on Spotify, bc at that point i can finally introduce friends to their works. Whereas before, there might have been about ten years of no legal way to do so.
There’s a couple of albums on my hard disc that ARE OBTAINED LEGALLY, i swear - think like friends handing me discs of their band back when we were in HS - and unless their careers specifically took off, there’s not really presence of that music online.
Or, once when i was headed to a Mejibray show in Nagoya, a small band on the street handed me (legally) a single. Their name was Age Zucation. I think. Looking online, can you find them to stream them? Idk. Well, i’ve preserved that single, at least for my personal listening use!
Long story short sometimes i’ve fantasized about a global agreement that every time a used media changed hands, a simple title transfer tax of $1 would be collected (like when vehicles change hands here in the US) and disbursed to the original copyright holders. I’d happily pay $1 more for every used transaction if it meant used transactions were more fully legitimized and moreso incentivizing media to be made with long-lasting goals considered!
