i wanted to put this in random instead of any actual threads, but with the one-two punch of Kyouka and Yoshiatsu, i’m made to remember one of my favourite PVs by Pentagon. I know that’s a sus and possibly upsetting first sentence but if you’ll bear with me for a moment…
i think to some degree my actual life direction changed when i saw this one. maybe it’s worth a watch?
For context, they put it out just before disbanding, and in the video, a woman who seems around 30 appears to express exhaustion as her boyfriend(?) of a same age continues band activities, and she supports him. Read the lyrics too, it’s from her perspective, you feel a yearning for the success she feels he deserves, but in the video you see her collapse on the subway.
I don’t want to praise pentagon, a band of vkei guys, when talking about harms women in the scene feel at the actions of vkei guys. I’ll instead talk about myself, bc when i saw this video i was first tremendously confused; it made no sense to me and seemed random, so i kept returning to it, wondering why. I shared it with female friends who knew of vkei asking their perspective, what did they get from it?
I don’t know (and don’t care) if this is what Pentagon intended, but what i got from talking to my friends is the song and video examined the toll knowing an artist intimately can take on a person. It’s still hopeful and loving, and that’s not enough, the spending on someone else is still felt by her. All these people who were then kids talking now as adults must have at some point wanted the best for whatever band, but now look at what’s fallen on all them.
So it makes me wonder if that disbandment was due in some part to looking at the effect continuing band activities was having on the people around them, and finding it not worth it. Eh, this isn’t an open letter to all vkei musicians to stop doing vkei music, as that wouldn’t at all be what i hope for. But transparently, personally i hope more people if they see this video or otherwise think seriously about what they’re giving to whom and what they’re getting from whom. I want to think my fav scene can go on to exist without taking so much from who sees so much in it.
