Randomly decided to analyze Yomi's (NIGHTMARE) vocal journey and write it all down.

Don’t know if people care to read but if there’s a place for this kind of thing, it’s here

2000-2003: Yomi can’t sing and is doing high-pitched screeches and the typical nasal VKei wail voice with scooping

2004-2007: Yomi learns to sing and overuses falsetto and high notes. He throws out the VK wail but develops a very smooth voice with a feminine quality.

2008-2010: Yomi finally begins puberty and develops a more aggressive tone, and his voice becomes gruff as he involves more grit and stylistically cuts off notes instead of ending them smoothly

2010-2014: Yomi has trouble hitting the high notes of his younger days, and this is where we hear the first signs of vocal damage as voice cracks occur more often and his high notes become nasal and fragile. But he also begins to develop his lower register with the songs of this era.

2015-2016: At this point, his voice is unrecognizable from what most would consider his “peak” (sometime around 2005-2008). His voice becomes extremely hoarse, and he loses the aggressive tone. He goes out of key often and loses his voice mid songs and simply does not hit high notes anymore and loses a lot of his natural legato with anything slightly high. Though during this time, Yomi begins to play around with harmonies. Then hiatus

2017-2019: Yomi immediately starts a band called Take No Break right after he quits his band to take a break… with them, making heavily computerized, smooth, and simple electro rock. So his voice becomes very smooth and simple, and he seems to be on key more. In late 2019, Nightmare teased their comeback by performing 2 songs where he still sounds very different yet, notably healthier.

2020-2022: Nightmare is back, and Yomi is notably healthier and improved, though his voice now sounds pop-y best compared to a lite Akihito (Pornograffiti). So he struggles to find the right tone and lacks the timbre for a lot of newer songs. The covid audience seems to have made an impact on his stage presence and, in turn, his intensity. He focuses more on ballads within his register and hones in on the layered harmonies

2023 seems to be the start of its own era. Yomi continues to strain with high notes and hoarseness, but there are notable improvements to his consistency, and seemingly due to covid restrictions lifting, so does his stage presence. This is the first year where we hear Yomi releasing music where we hear his “old voice” coming out and he’s made improvements to his legato. He’s also actually hitting his high notes now with greater success.

IMPORTANT EDIT: Jan 2024: Yomi announces his functional dysphonia has been cured :bangbang::bangbang::bangbang:

Interesting observations.

I would narrow his peak to 2008-2011 and point to 2014 to the point it was absolutely obvious he lost capabilities to a point performance and set list had to be adjusted . Also, about the take no break thing, while it really seemed like an asshole move back in the day, it was good for him to be able to sing without forcing his voice as part of his treatment.

While he is coming back slowly he sings in a different key as he used to get better results so it’s hard to say how the band can go on playing older songs consistently without being detrimental to Yomi’s health.

There’s also the Sendai Kamotsu issue, its never clear to me if he’s actually forcing his voice or not she he does the chiba act. Tone is closer to his normal voice but the texture is so rough it’s hard for me to say. Touring too much is what definitely hurt him back in the day but I am not sure if having SK on top made it so much worse or if it was pushing him less. They’re still doing it so either they don’t think it’s a big factor or there’s a lot of bad judgment.

I don’t think Yomi would ever get replaced so the time the band has under the sun right now mostly depends on how much he recovers and how much he can keep going.

The Chiba voice seems to have remained mostly the same. The voice change and deterioration isn’t as noticeable. But the singing style does seem concerning. Even vocal fry and distortion is meant to come out relaxed and easy. It seems he does something like half fry half distortion ?

I guess it can be fine but he’d have to be really careful with it.
