I have to agree that the theatricality was a big factor in this band. It got me checking on them regularly besides if the releases were good or not.
Honestly I think when band members each have a very distinct style is something that I really enjoy. Cause it feels a lot more personal when they all express themselves differently even if they don’t necessarily match. With Mejibray I feel like even though they all dresses differently they all had some sort of coordination so they didn’t all look completely out of place from each other. I think it’s kinda of hard to look completely out of place with band members anyway. Because everyone is there to preform the same music in the same subculture, therefore they are all going to look similar or rather cohesive. The only way I can really think of for members to look completely different (eg) is if someone was decora, someone basic white girl, someone tanbi kei, and someone else’s lookin like a hippy. Matching members will always look different in each music style though
I loved VanessA and was excited when Mejibray formed, to this day I still think Slivers.exe is their best release. Don’t really remember much of their first album and the title track on the single they dropped after was good. Nothing from what I heard after it really stuck out to me, but that was during a time i took a break from vk so I might still go back and check those out properly at some point.
If you do, I’d recommend starting with the 420 theatrical roses. It’s their only “real” album save for their first, which is more like a demos compilation ngl. It’s great, but it’s a bit unplanned-sounding. SM 1 & 2 are also great but they literally are singles comps. Max catchy max interesting, low cohesion You. But 420 is one solid vision from beginning to end, every track has a role in the album’s story, that’s their masterpiece. Then go check out the others + the b-sides if you like that cuz there’s a lot of gold there too!
This sums up their career as a band really well.
I didn’t like everything that Meji put out, at one point in time I even found them to be overrated to a certain degree. Over time, I appreciate them a lot more and I always thought that visually they were a super cool band!
Also OMG please read this disclaimer if you’re new to Meji and think you’ll give them a chance by checking SM #1 - the version currently on streaming is a late career remaster and uhhhhh i don’t love it
I won’t talk about better or worse but just be aware it’s a re-mix that way boosts Tsuzuku’s voice and strips reverb+ presence from the guitars.
So if you listen to say Sadisgate and think it’s just the sounds of grumbling over a background guitar, just know the original SM (however you may choose to find those files if you do) flips these two, with a thick instrumental body and TzK’s stranger vocalisations as texture laid on top. Which is where i swear they belong.
But funnily they sell merch in the member colors to this day ![]()
Regarding Mejibray, I used to like them, even saw them live when they did a taiban with Sadie, Kiryu and BugLug and remember enjoying them a lot live. But I hadn’t listen to them in ages. So I gave them a spin the other day and were so confused what I could have possibly like about that ![]()
Mejibray explained:
the singer is a heavily marilyn manon influenced guy, the guitarist is a brilliant shredder, the bass player has pink hair and jumps around a lot, the drummer is supposed to be like a f’d up baby
The best way to describe Mejibray is a car crash that was bound to happen. They had a few bangers but after awhile their songs started to blend together. It also didn’t help that their fans were very annoying.
IIRC, their rise came in between the period where the GazettE Was neck deep with Sony. So the worst of heir lapsed fans found solace in Mejibray because of how similar their sound was. Also this might be hate but I’ll say it…Mia is a VERY poor man’s Uruha. Outside of being able to solo his ass off, he does not have the sauce or the Pen that Uruha does. I vaguely remember seeing comparisons of the two and I didn’t understand it at all.
In the end, I do feel bad about how they ended up. It seemed like they had a toxic relationship with their label. And it’s clear that Mia (points to the weird social media behavior) and others are still dealing with the effects of their time together.
But on the flip side, i think the fandom (especially THEIR supporters) needed to be reminded that shit aint all sweet in the VK scene.
