SUGIZO

Widely recognized for his atmospheric guitar tone, expressive violin playing, and experimental approach to composition, SUGIZO has built a career that bridges rock, electronic music, classical composition, and world music. Over more than three decades, he has become one of the most distinctive musicians in Japanese rock, known not only for his musical innovation but also for his humanitarian activism and global cultural engagement.

SUGIZO rose to prominence in the late 1980s as the lead guitarist and violinist of LUNA SEA, which formed in Kanagawa in 1989. Alongside bandmates RYUICHI, INORAN, J, and Shinya, the band quickly developed a reputation within Japan’s underground rock scene. Their early sound combined elements of gothic rock, post-punk, and alternative rock with dramatic visuals that helped define a darker and more musically sophisticated branch of the visual kei movement. LUNA SEA’s independent debut album gained strong attention, and after signing to a major label in the early 1990s they began a rapid rise to mainstream success.

Throughout the 1990s LUNA SEA became one of the most important rock bands in Japan. Albums such as Image (1992), Eden (1993), Mother (1994), and Style (1996) showcased the band’s evolving sound, blending emotional songwriting with progressive arrangements and powerful live performances. SUGIZO played a crucial role in shaping this musical identity. His guitar work frequently relied on layered effects, atmospheric textures, and melodic phrasing rather than traditional rock riffing. At the same time, his use of violin added an orchestral element rarely heard in rock music, contributing to the band’s dramatic and cinematic sound. By the mid-1990s LUNA SEA had become one of the largest rock acts in Japan, performing in major arenas and selling millions of records while influencing countless younger artists.

Toward the end of the decade, however, the band members increasingly began exploring their own creative projects. In 2000 LUNA SEA announced a temporary “period of rest,” culminating in a farewell performance at the Tokyo Dome. Although the band would later reunite and resume activity, this hiatus marked an important turning point that allowed SUGIZO to expand his work beyond the boundaries of a single band.

SUGIZO’s solo career actually began while LUNA SEA was still active. In 1997 he released his debut solo single “Lucifer,” followed by his first solo album Truth?. The record demonstrated a dramatically different musical direction from his band work, incorporating drum and bass rhythms, electronic production, ambient soundscapes, and philosophical themes. Rather than focusing purely on guitar-driven rock, SUGIZO used the project to explore music as a conceptual and experimental medium. The release established him as an artist interested in blending genres and using music to explore spiritual and social ideas.

Following LUNA SEA’s hiatus in 2000, SUGIZO devoted more attention to his solo work. His second major solo album, C:LEAR (2003), further expanded his electronic and ambient style while incorporating more melodic songwriting and collaborations with other musicians. Over time his solo music continued to evolve, combining orchestral instrumentation, world music influences, and electronic production. In 2011 he released two companion albums, Flower of Life and Tree of Life, which together represented one of the most ambitious projects of his career. Flower of Life focused largely on instrumental compositions and atmospheric soundscapes, while Tree of Life emphasized vocal songs and collaborations, reflecting the dual aspects of his musical identity.

In the years that followed, SUGIZO continued to expand his discography and artistic scope. His 2016 album Oto explored themes of sound and consciousness, blending traditional instrumentation with modern electronic textures. The following year he released Oneness M (2017), a collaborative album featuring contributions from a wide range of artists across different musical backgrounds. In 2020 he released Ai to Chōwa (“Love & Tranquility”), an album reflecting his interest in spiritual balance and global harmony. His later works, including The Voyage to the Higher Self (2022), continued to develop his signature style of combining rock instrumentation, orchestral arrangements, and ambient electronic elements into deeply atmospheric compositions.

Beyond his solo career, SUGIZO has also participated in numerous collaborative projects and bands. In 2009 he joined the legendary rock group X Japan as lead guitarist following the death of Hide, becoming an important part of the band’s modern lineup. He has also collaborated with the electronic/world music project Juno Reactor, as well as participating in various supergroups and special performances within the Japanese rock community. These collaborations further demonstrate his willingness to cross musical boundaries and work across genres and cultures.

In addition to his musical achievements, SUGIZO is widely recognized for his humanitarian and activist work. He has spoken openly about issues such as environmental protection, nuclear disarmament, indigenous rights, and refugee support. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake, he participated in volunteer relief efforts and charitable initiatives. His activism eventually led him to work with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where he has supported campaigns raising awareness about global refugee issues and has visited refugee communities in the Middle East.

Across more than three decades of work, SUGIZO has maintained a unique position in Japanese music. His contributions to LUNA SEA helped define the sound and aesthetic of 1990s Japanese rock, while his solo career has pushed far beyond traditional genre boundaries. By combining technical musicianship, experimental composition, philosophical themes, and humanitarian engagement, he has built a legacy as an artist who views music not only as entertainment but also as a vehicle for cultural expression and social awareness.

So, so happy that this is getting a release; the bits that I’ve heard from it sounded awesome; (which were mostly just different accents and flourishes layered or mixed with already existing songs; on brand for him honestly) I hope it also gets released for streaming. Also hoping for the music from the play from last year too; same deal with the bits sampled being really intriguing.

Is CDJapan still a good place to get music from? I’ve been using those shopping services and buy from HMV.

For his solo - last year he mentioned that he was working on Oneness F and getting that finished, and that he was in a good place to finally finish it, despite the soundtracks he was working on at the same time. I wouldn’t be surprised if that came out around 2027, after the LS tour wraps.

The guys seams pretty intent on moving forward and honoring Shinya’s wish, so I don’t think they’d ‘go back to sleep’ unless something really serious happened that would impede any movement forward. Taking a break, however, I can see that. The tour might be both draining and healing for them at the same time; that could take a lot out of them, ya know?

Interesting since I saw in an interview he said that 愛と調和 was basically that Oneness F was going to be and it turned into that.

CDJapan is still reliable! If you’re in the US I’m not sure how they’re handling tariffs (there shouldn’t be any on CDs or DVDs), because I haven’t bought anything new in a while.

Indeed; I’m fairly certain that his trip to Paris recently (last year? year before? can’t quite remember) was in connection to finishing / working on Oneness F. Apparently when he was originally working on it he had intended to complete it / work on it in Paris. (The shutdowns made this impossible, obviously.)

SuperLove 2024 was a bit like ‘the lead’ into him refocusing on fully completing it. It will be interesting to see if he re-arranges/mixes the vocal songs from 愛と調和 to add into Oneness F, as he originally intended. Personally I think this pretty likely, but you never know.

@blamsamran

Oh thanks! Appreciate the confirm; I’ll have to look into it next time I’m looking to buy (and the shipping situation; never know how that’s going to go these days … )
