The Music Recommendation Thread

I dont know any of those bands (although I will be checking them out) :frowning: but I plugged Show Me A Dinosaur into MusicMap and this is what it gave me, so id recommend listening to the ones closest to the middle bc those are the most similar

Interesting, seems like there are some quite unknown bands in there - at least the bands I recognize.

Tristesse de la Lune for example was a shortlived german gothic project around two decades ago formed by two female singers. I think they had only one album and it was mainly halfway popular at the time because one (or both?) of them was the former singer of a relatively famous gothic band.

That is why I love this website <3 I have discovered so much from it

Need some Korean rock and metal bands. I already listen to a bunch of Korean hip hop and know all the K-pop stuff but the only metal bands I know are Madman’s Espirit and Dark Mirror ov Tragedy and know no rock bands lol

I haven’t listened to any K-rock in a long-ass time but I remember Huckleberry Finn being very good. Kind of garage-y indie rock sound with raw emotions.

In a honesty it’s quite iffy with Korean metal because the choice is very limited and the ones you often find are more of the extreme metal variety not that different from stuff you can get elsewhere. Might ve a bit ironic but I think Madmans Esprit might actually be overall one of the most quality Korean metal outputs.
I picked some of the bands I listen to from Korea not just metal but mainly alternative rock and indie. Korean indie has special sentimental flavour that certainly isn’t for everyone but it’s quite unique. There is certainly more bands to discover but navigating Korean music feels sometimes even more tedious than Japanese.
In regards to metal I would definitely check out Soumbalgwang if that’s your cup of tea.

Zeal & Ardor is a unique fusion of genres that combines black metal, blues, gospel, soul, and electronic elements. Their music often juxtaposes harsh, aggressive metal riffs with haunting spiritual melodies and rhythmic chants inspired by African-American spirituals and slave songs.

I didn’t realize I needed this in my life. Thanks!

I find most of modern vkei too insipid to try more than a couple of songs of the bands out there, while for more normal current j-rock or even j-pop I barely know a thing but want to scratch that itch of a distinct edgy sound or style that hopefully is from an active musician.

Really vague and what even but don’t want to think much.

Also pls no shoegaze.

Can you recommend any 80~00s vk that encompass the feeling of melancholy adrenaline to a degree? Can even be some notable songs you like from various bands and I will do my digging. Thank you Ozzy!

I mentioned Jiluka yesterday in the “bands you that you have an irrational dislike or hatred of” topic

But Arlequin is a band that is on my list of bands I wanted to check out. So, having such a list, obviously I don’t give up - yet

LOL that’s hilarious but I respect your honesty!

Jiluka ”Sacrifice”, “Faceless”, and “Last Faith” are some of my favorite by them. Saw them live in Brooklyn, NY 2? years ago, they were insane in that shitty house. Have an awesome recording of them wish I could post.. They are great. Cannot imagine any hate toward them. Drummer is a total savage, rifts are intense. Metal has western elements which I throughly enjoy for “new age” it comes with the territory and fan base hopefully. I would love to ship them. Will create a thread on them soon.

Which one did you check out and did not like?

Arelquin gives me BORN vibes with how their singer isn’t directly lined up with the band on purpose. Gives a sense of rawness and authenticity.. singer leaves his heart out. Live-wise I think his voice can improve but who cares this is their journey and I am allllll hereee for it babbby. Will make a thread on them also.

Some of their tracks I especially love, “Ichijiku”, “Eclipse”, “Hakaana” . Band is disgustingly fast, again, BORN vibes a bit, with how quick the bass changes pattern. Tight. Breathing fire clown dragons. Melancholy rush. GLORIOUS.

the classics do that for me. kein, laputa, der zibet, merry go round, gilles de rais, luna sea, deadman, kuroyume and even la mule at times. but id personally recommend checking the later nagoya kei (after early kuroyume) if youre looking for that vibe which youre talking about:-)

I checked out the three songs you mentioned and was surprised how different they were.

I started with “Hakaana” but turned it off after about 30 seconds  way to much western-growl-metal-like for me. I don’t know why I did not mentally tick them off my “bands to check out list”, but I didn’t.

Next was “Ichijku” which was much more my taste. Could have been a song from the mid 2000’s which is a good thing in my book. And there was actual singing

“Eclipse” was okay but I did not like the guitar and growling parts. And also not that short bit around the third minute of the song. I internally called it the “Skrillex” part of the track

Btw., it’s not that I’m generally against growling, but I prefer it in small and good doses. I love Hazuki’s growling.

If you like ballads, Arlequin’s “if” is one of my favorite vkei ballads. I really wish they’d make something like that again.
