Kinda VK related. Tower records flagship store will be renovated but will still (partially) be open. So if you are planning to go there, make sure it’s open!
With the current developments of VK stores closing, I’m not sure if the (already very small) VK section will stay. But yay, craft beer at a record store?!
"Tower Records Shibuya store undergoes major renovation. Shibuya’s cultural hub aims to become a new mecca for “music” and “oshikatsu.” Renovations will begin on Tuesday, November 4th, and the store will fully reopen on Saturday, February 28th next year.
*Tower Records Shibuya will be gradually renovating the first floor and parts of the third through sixth floors starting on Tuesday, November 4th, with a full opening on Saturday, February 28th. Based on the theme of “Beyond trends, to what you love,” the store aims to be a “new experience music store” where music, culture, and fans can intersect, allowing visitors to discover, deepen, and share what they love.
This is Tower Records Shibuya’s first major renovation in two years, since the expansion of its analog floor in 2023. This renovation will bring a total of five floors in line with modern trends.
The first floor, in particular, will be completely redesigned, from the entrance to the cash register layout, resulting in a sales floor with even greater visibility than the previous VMD.
Meanwhile, floors three through six will see partial renovations. Private photo spots and neon-style decorations will be added, transforming the store into a more inviting place for “oshikatsu” (supporting your favorite artists) than ever before. A new craft beer stand will be installed in TOWER VINYL, the analog floor. The entire new Shibuya store, never seen before, will be unveiled in February next year.
Features of the Tower Records Shibuya Renovated Floors
1st Floor: An Immersive Space Unique to an Entertainment Shop
The first floor, the face of the Shibuya store, will be renovated as an entertainment space symbolizing Shibuya. An experiential welcome gate will be introduced as a new display method. Mirrors will be placed near the ceiling within the gate, creating a space that will make you want to post on social media. Don’t miss the exclusive background music, available only inside the gate. Once inside the gate, LED signage appears, creating a new musical discovery. Next to the Welcome Gate , the Power Push Area offers a wide variety of catalog items, including CDs, vinyl records, books, and popular Tower Records original merchandise. This extensive selection, unique to the Shibuya store, will fuel customers’ passion for music. An inquiry counter will be located in front of the Power Push Area . Smooth guidance and special gift distribution near the entrance will enhance customers’ shopping experience. In response to the recent trend toward supporting idols, a “Support Area” will be developed. In addition to a wide selection of Tower Records’ wildly popular support merchandise, a permanent photo spot with a selfie function will be installed, allowing solo visitors to take photos. A new, giant TOWER RECORDS logo monument will also be installed at the store entrance, giving the store a more stylish and eye-catching appearance.*
3rd Floor: Deeper J-POP Experience.
The third floor offers a full selection of Japanese music, with an expanded J-POP catalog inventory and approximately 1.5 times the current selection. From major labels to indie artists, the third floor will recreate the diverse appeal of J-POP and become a hub for disseminating “Japanese pop culture,” attracting attention from around the world.
4th Floor: Life-size photo spot where you can feel like you’re right next to the artists. The fourth floor, centered around idols, anime, and games, has been remodeled into a private room for a more immersive experience. By installing a giant mirror next to the life-size images, it has become a “dance studio-style photo spot,” allowing you to easily take photos as if you were standing on the same stage as the artists. This specially designed space allows for customized lighting to suit the characteristics of each artist and event. In the anime and game corner, the number of racks has been increased by 1.5 times compared to the previous floor. In response to the growing popularity of Japan’s legendary anime music, we will be expanding our product variety. Image right: Dance studio-style photo spot .
5th Floor: A globally coveted K-POP mecca.
The fifth floor, which has gained popularity as a K-POP destination, will further pursue a more Korean aesthetic. The neon-style decorative lighting, reminiscent of K-POP’s downtown districts, will create a space where you can experience the authentic K-POP atmosphere without leaving Japan.
*6th Floor: Relax with Music and Beer.
In a corner of the 6th floor, where the vinyl specialty store TOWER VINYL is located, we have opened a new standing beer bar, “TOWER RECORDS BEER.” We offer a total of 12 taps of unique craft beers, mainly from domestic breweries, including popular IPAs and seasonal brews. We also plan to offer original craft beers. Enjoy a freshly poured beer along with the music in the store. We also have a DJ booth set up inside the store, and are planning special events such as pre-release listening parties, where you can enjoy vinyl records at high volume and in real time with a beer in hand. TOWER RECORDS BEER Tower Records Shibuya has been a leader in Shibuya culture since its relocation and opening in 1995. This renovation will continue its nearly 30-year history while creating new ways to enjoy music for the next generation.
