In karaoke, every time there’s somebody who requests “let’s sing like Hakuei!”, and it always ends like a bad comedian sketch
Omg so much Hakuei - I remember there was one person i followed who first told me that Hakuei’s voice wasn’t her thing. I was surprised but intrigued - I think there was somebody who did an analysis and it might be the way he sings/the type of singer he is. (Tenor? Idk I do NOT know music)
Interestingly, I want to but haven’t found myself really been able to get into Pierrot, my first impressions so far is that Kirito sounds kinda like Hakuei? Is Kirito for all of you alright, conversely?
I don’t think he sings badly, although I don’t like his fixation on “HIMSELF”
i don’t like the way hakuei sings either but i love kirito’s voice. to me they sound nothing alike lol. i think hakuei sounds like he’s straining a lot (disclaimer: i haven’t listened to much of him at all) whereas kirito sounds much more stable to me
oh and my pick for the thread is arimura Ryutaro. he’s very pretty, i like his fashion style, i think his solo merch is very nice, etc etc BUT his voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me.
I love pura! And the fact he sounds like 8 years old discovered Kurt Cobain
As someome who likes both I wouldn’t group them on the same category, but I think you are correct. You could also say BeaU’s/boogieman’s Juno as a middle point between them.
Felony, Blasphemy ! Heresy ?
Love Pura with all my heart and I think this band is one of the coolest in the world, but Taro’s voice is indeed.. Special in a not good way ?
I seriously wish sometimes “ Sanatorium “ and “ Alone again Wonderul World “ were sung by better singers… But his voice/singing technique sometimes matches with the overall vibe of the band . “ Paranoia “ and “ Replay “ are beautifully executed even with his unique voice
This could actually apply to most of VK singers seriously.. ( except from Seth. Seth is one of the supreme VK vocalists. Untouchable ) . Like, most of them are not “ good singers “ typically when you think about it, with voices that are not melodious. if i ended up citing them all the list would be enormous ( yeah even the super popular famous ones ! ) But what I find cool is that the songs compositions are usually fitting perfectly with the tone and voice identity of the vocalists !
Sakito, it’s not great either. Well, after that, not sure that we can consider him like truly handsome.
I’m not here to attack you blindly as a hardcore fan, but I do feel the need to clarify a few things. Ryutaro Arimura has faced vocal limitations for decades. He himself has openly acknowledged that his voice is fading and not what it once was. Since his diagnosis with Guillain–Barré syndrome in 2010, although he recovered, he continues to deal with long-term effects to this day.
So before making comments about Ryutaro’s voice, I kindly suggest doing a bit of research. His unique nasal singing style is part of his artistic identity. it’s not up for debate. If it’s not your thing, that’s okay. But perhaps it’s best to simply move on without commenting.

Also, please be respectful to the vocalists, because if any of them became ill before or after joining a band and the condition is related to their health and voice, please take that into consideration.

Taichi from RAN, he’s very handsome but he cannot sing.
Ice from Dat/BFN/ whatever he’s doing . Yeah he’s hot but vocally , nah. He’s tryna be Gackt circa 1999 but likes a temu version.
No cover will hide you from me At least you think he is pretty so you are only half wrong
Edit: With the new title of the topic my comment no longer makes sense
I’m seriously not here to bash your fav, but isn’t this the whole point of this thread?
People have mentioned my favs in this thread either, but it would be insane of me to reply to all of them and say, “this is what makes his voice unique. It’s not up for debate.”
Some of my favs have battled or are battling voice-related illnesses as well. Many other users have mentioned them by name on this forum, saying that they sound horrible live or that the dvd release sounds completely autotuned.
Again, it would be really insane and combative of me to reply to all of them saying, “X had surgery some time ago, he’s doing his best, do some RESEARCH before commenting!” It’s just their opinion and they’re entitled to it. Especially on a thread with a negative title.
I changed the title before I read this post but now I feel justified in doing so. Topic now has a new purpose in life. Post vocalists who are an acquired taste for one reason or another (and we know visual kei has a TON of those).
I like this new prompt better, good change
I would say Hikarito/AIOLIN AKA Kanata Yumishiro from AURORIZE.
Don’t get me wrong, I love his music and he’s one of my favourite newer gen visual kei artists. But his singing voice is a stark contrast from his deep talking voice.
His singing is just too flourishing and majestic that it can actually be jarring to hear at first. I did have to force myself to tune in until I found songs I realy loved, and became an avid fan from there.
I really, really like Gilles, the first singer from eliphas levi on their first demo, but iirc he didn’t sound much like that in his later bands
”octogenarian priest having a heart attack” is a cool vibe
Similarly: Aeba from monariza / mona lisa, strange gruff old man voice
Another favourite on the opposite squeaky end is Haruhi from ove, but I’ve made friends who aren’t into vk listen to them and they always point out that he literally, fully sounds like spongebob
I get your point, this thread is for unpopular opinions, and everyone’s allowed to share theirs. No problem there. But there’s a big difference between saying “I don’t like someone’s voice” and going as far as comparing it to “nails on a chalkboard” without having any idea why that voice sounds the way it does.
And honestly? Now it seems like you did your research, but your original reply made it pretty clear that you had no clue about Ryutaro’s medical history. Because if you did, you probably would’ve at least said something like, “I know he went through X, but even so…” the bare minimum level of consideration.
You say it would be “insane and combative” to reply to everyone with background and context. But you know what’s also kind of insane? Publicly criticizing an artist’s vocal performance without knowing they’ve been dealing with a serious neurological illness that directly affected their voice. That’s not just a lack of empathy that’s throwing out uninformed judgment and calling it an “opinion.”
And no, this isn’t about defending “my fave.” It’s about something way more basic: having a personal opinion doesn’t excuse you from the responsibility of knowing what you’re talking about. When you ignore what someone’s been through and reduce their work to a knee-jerk reaction, your opinion loses weight it becomes shallow, even careless.
So sure, you can say what you want. But saying it with awareness and accountability is the least you can do, especially when you’re talking about someone’s art, shaped by battles you probably couldn’t even begin to imagine.
