Vocalists who are an acquired taste

Yui from Yousei Teikoku is the perfect example of acquired taste. She is a great show woman, amazing performer, the perfect lead. But her singing is… kinda oof. Especially in the early days when she landed more on the moe cutesy higher pitches. Nowadays she has more range and voice control, but it’s not exactly for everyone.

Another acquired taste I can think of is kyary pamyupamyu, also known as the smallest vocal range in JPop

Thanks for sharing this clip! Added to my watch later! I’ve not listened to too much of his solo stuff but this will be interesting to see haha!

The opening for Mirai Nikki slaps but I know exactly what you mean by the vocals! Maybe I need to listen to more of their stuff! Another band that has a vocalist with a high pitched voice is the band nano ripe. I like some of their music, but the vocals were something that took some getting used to!

I never liked Due le Quartz’s Sakito’s singing. I’m sorry, but I just don’t think he was a good Vocalist at all, it’s not just the sound of his voice. Even at the beginning of his solo career, Miyavi sounded much better - and we all know that he was/is not the most skilled vocalist around.

Also, I’m not a fan of DazzlingBAD’s -iT-. I wish all of the bands song were instrumental ones because I do like the music itself

Ah, also, most angura kei are indefesible despite loving some to death like Sharaku Kobayashi.

Or Tonbimaru?笑

Gosh so many years passed since his death, wtffff… I remember it was in August.

I’m not sure how to interpret this reply

Gara from Merry is an aquired taste in my opinion. I loved their stuff back in the days. Haven’t checked their newer releases yet though.

Another vote for Gara. I would also add Yuuki from Jinkaku Radio as 2 voices that can really be hard to like at the begining and can make ppl run away from the bands… and Yuki from Kalimero. Outside vk, Kyono from The Mad Capsule Markets.

I LOVE VOCALIST who constantly sound like they would non-stop masturbate while singing. always a 10/10 experience. Hakuei is a ten. I just don’t care of a lot of his discography though

Not gonna lie, I am also very intrigued by his voice and singing style because it is so unique. But I definitely know that it is not for everyone. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

So, let’s protect Gara together!

I remember once I was listening to Merry and Jinkaku Radio and my wife suddenly came and was like “what’s that annoying voice” :joy:

Someone I very weirdly like listening to, then catch myself thinking why the hell, then continuing again is Fu~ki.

I kinda prefer this version over Juka’s.

Also, I kind feel like Asagi actually is one of those you either love or hate. I personally love.

This an awesome thread, probably my final comment of the day because I am loving this place -

Deathgaze singer Ai has a crazy deep? voice. First was unsure if I liked it (Now they are one of my favorite bands) but I believe objectively he is an amazing singer.

(Insert Vegeta kneeling .gif)

He flutters his hand holding the mic like Mao does from Sadie. Must be how they reset.

Gara is one of those vocalist who are amazing, yet you also only are in the mood for his voice in very specific moments.

This singer, Kaoru (aka Unknown Dear Forest aka UDFmisa) is the definition of acquired taste. I mean this one in a positive way - I actually like her stuff, but I understand if people don’t vibe with it at all :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: .

jesus christ she’s a legend here (in a very negative way…)

She has that standard VKei singing style lol. Just that her vibrato is exaggerated and slow. Very wavy. I’m sure there’s a male vocalist who does this EXACT same thing. It just wouldn’t be my thing
