What are some musicals you're into?

I’ve kind of done myself a disservice by writing musicals off as “cringey” for most of my life, since most of my exposure to them is from things like Hamilton or Heathers, which personally aren’t really my cup of tea.

Anyway, I recently discovered a French musical that i really enjoy (Mozart l’opera rock), and it’s kind of left me wanting more. So I thought, since people here have music tastes that generally match up with mine, please feel free to recommend some!

Beetlejuice (2019 run), Be More Chill are some of my favs!

I love the classics like Phantom of the Opera and Cats (it’s also really great dancing! And don’t judge it by the terrible movies).

I also love the Austrian musical about Empress Sissi “Elisabeth” and Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires) is also an all time favorite.

I absolutely would love to see Beetlejuice, Sweeny Todd, Wicked and Rock Horror live if I get the chance. (Written while waering a Beetlejuice costume for Halloween.)

The Disney musical are also pretty great productions if you like the music.

I can recommend the TV Show “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” - it is not a classical musical, it is kind of a Comedy Show with lots of songs performed by the cast in every episode. The songs are very catchy and often have a sarcastic or ironic tone.

Even though the show is very funny, mental health is a big topic and I can imagine that a lot of people who are dealing with issues like depression, borderline personaliy disorder and similar things can relate to the main character.

I have loved musicals since I saw the 2004 Phantom of the Opera adaptation. In hindsight it is not the greatest but I was 14 and absolutely loved it.

Phantom of the Opera is still one of my favourites, although it has been unseated as the top favourite by Tanz der Vampire (and I will never forgive Michael Crawford for butchering the English version). I also like Wicked, Heathers, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Les Mis a lot. Basically anything dark, gothic, grandiose and cheesy I will likely eat up without hesitation. …Which is probably also why I adore Kamijo so god damn much :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I do enjoy other kinds as well, although I generally dislike jukebox musicals. I feel like they often fail at the things that make musicals different from other forms of storytelling and either become plays with musical numbers sprinkled in or thinly veiled excuses to just perform crowd favourite songs.

I also love Takarazuka although I have yet to see a single full production. I need to get on that asap because I know it will all be perfectly up my alley.

How could I forget to mention this! :smiling_face_with_tear:

It’s like the negative of vk. Vk is men dress feminine to attract young woman and Takarazuka is woman dressed as men to attract older woman :joy: I take both!

I saw Tanz der Vampire in Hamburg in september, it was fantastic :slightly_smiling_face:

I would not consider myself a fan of musicals but I do enjoy the from time to time. I also vividly remember a Cabaret Staging that I liked much better than the classic movie.

Oooh I have yet to see the German version! There was a production in Finland that I was able to see 30+ times and happened to be in Budapest in time for a show. But I will likely one day travel to Germany just to see the original :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I saw a production of Cabaret for the fist time quite recently and I have to say I did not like it very much  The staging and such were great but the story itself felt too anachronistic and overall just somehow off to me.

Les Miserables and Evita. Something about history and showtunes makes me happy. Also spring time for Hitler and cabaret.

I generally don’t like musicals, but I can watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show anytime. Would be fun to see a stage production of it sometime, somehow.

I also recall enjoying Repo! The Genetic Opera, but idk how well it holds up, might be ripe for a rewatch. Oh, and on a similar but older note, Phantom of the Paradise as well.
