What elements of the mix do you focus in on when you listen to music?
VK only?
I have no idea what exactly I care for in VK, usually it’s the whole mix, either I like it or I don’t
Hmm maybe the vocals matter too
I made it for all music now.
Hmmm… I think I focus a bit more on the vocals but it’s hard to say. Sometimes I really try to focus on one instrument but usually I don’t. Like I can hear the diffrent elements when I want to but most of the time it’s more like everything melted together into “music”.
Okay now that it’s all music…
I cannot vote for both drum and bass, but those. Rhythm section is the foundation of the song, and everything else is basically cake decoration or flavoring. Following that is probably synth line and vocals (not lyrics lol). Guitar is there I guess except when it’s guitar music u kno
Where’s the everything option?
I’ll hone into a certain instrument line every now and then, but I’m really just absorbing everything at the moment. When I’m evaluating audio gear, particular parts of the frequency response are somewhat centered to different instruments so I’m also all over the place.
Thank you.
For me, the most important things are melody and rhythm, a song itself without any arrangement, like how it would sound a cappella. Arrangement and production are definitely important, they can make a good song even better. But for me, they can’t save a bad one.
Vocals can make a big difference. As for instruments, I probably like drums the most.
I started this topic because I was genuinely curious as to what everyone else would respond, and I am not surprised at all! This also confirms I’m in the minority, as I’ve discovered that when I listen to music I hone in on the rhythm guitar.
I mostly listen to guitar-centric music but when I don’t, I gravitate towards the bass lines. So I put rhythm guitar because when I pick up a guitar and play something, that’s usually what I gravitate to. Vocals are another thing entirely. I find that I have a hard time understanding what people are saying sometimes, so it’s treated as another instrument in the mix to me. Funny though, because when I understand an artist I understand every word.
i clicked synth but i meant bass. i am however a child of the 80s so maybe it’s right after all lol
It was really hard for me to just pick one thing as it depends so much. There are some bands I like because of the singer’s voice, while there are other bands where I don’t care much about the vocals, but really enjoy the guitars. It also depends of the genre.
Most of the time it’s just the combination of various things that make me like a band.
Yeah, same here! I like to parse through every element, but since mixing is obviously focused on the voice, I guess that’s the first thing that grabs me
